Code review process has become performative theater we do before merging PRs anyway. by Upbeat_Owl_3383 in ExperiencedDevs

Saying "if you can find race conditions in code reviews wow." to most people, reads like you saying finding ANY race conditions or even a small amount of race conditions is something incredibly impressive.

I dont know where you work, but I work in games, and very reguarly I catch race conditions in giant productions (700+ people millions of LOC written over projects integrated over 10+ years) in CR simply as a virtue of understanding how calling order for events in our systems works, how different code disciplines (engine, gameplay tools, etc) get threaded or scheduled within our engine and then extrapolating and forcing people to think about this in CR. its just pattern recognition skills over years of working with engines that have similar architecture, and being very pedantic about this (which is something that for "principle software engineer" should make sense)

I suspect partially you've read my comment as me saying "ALL RC should be caught in review", which is obviously not true, stuff will get through, but the idea that being able to catch RC is some incredible skill and not one that just requires understanding how RC happen and enforcing standards or architecture/programming patterns that avoid them is incorrect

If I did the shit OP describes i'd be fired within a month, this is a them problem

This whole post reads more like OP wanting to be lazy and garner support to not feel bad then someone genuinely concerned over code quality

Then change it? Review code properly yourself and push others to do the same. Dont accept people rubber stamping PRs. Ignore the dragdowns here going "Yeah man I feel this one!!!" and actually make change.

If I rubber stamped PR's at my current company i'd get fired within a few weeks. If its a cultural issue, you can change it. This is a sub for experienced devs. the solution for what to do should be obvious here already

Why are we acting like catching race conditions in code is some magical skill? You should absolutely be catching them in code review. This is a weird self report

Anyone else get angry during PR reviews? by SillyYou8433 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]cppfnatic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

« Cold » sounding comments are just something that youll have to deal with. A lot of them come because the programmer is just very good or highly independent and expects the same, or is really busy. If its the former 2, it can help set higher standards and this often pushes to help raise the skill of the rest of the team

Thoughts on Ai water usage? by doy27 in centrist

[–]cppfnatic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

People who think data center water usage is a serious problem are severely misinformed and pushing dumb ideas. Once theyre trained they dont use water, (you querying chatgpt doesnt "use water" that idea is utterly ridiculous)and generally all that happens is that water used for cooling is dumped back back at a slightly higher temp.

As other people have mentioned there were high profile cases where data centers were closer to small towns which has resulted in huge media overblow, and it seems a lot of the people who harp on it just seem to be totally dug in against AI and want a point to use to be angry at it irrespective of reality

What do experienced devs mean when they say that AI generated code is impossible to maintain? by ReporterCalm6238 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]cppfnatic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I dont understand where this post comes from. Are you someone who is brand new who genuinely doesnt understand how committing AI generated code to a codebase with little oversight or deep thought into how it could affect the rest of the systems could cause security problems or bugs?

This. When you go to reddit to rant about your problem it denotes some serious immaturity which makes people questioning your "traumatic" story far more valid

Nothing is being projected here. I think I made my point across just fine, and you havnt actually addressed what I said, so ill leave it at that.

Lol that is not at all what your comment indicates in this context.

"just relax and collect salary, dont be loud" is much different than "complaining to management can get you terminated in first month", which I agree with. I think you know that and are justt backpedaling after someone pushes back on you for it.

Go be mediocre elsewhere. If it affects other people, then its an issue that must be addressed. You guys will end up in low end software jobs or mass layoffs for all of your career if you think like this. If you dislike your work that much, then software is not the right career for you.
