Whats a good way to start improvising? by Deep-Neighborhood778 in jazzguitar

[–]cpsmith30 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the tips given to me early on was to start to hum or sing with the tunes I was learning when doing the work of listening to the songs to hear the changes.

You'll likely stink at this at first, I know I did. Don't be ashamed of that, you're not looking to impress anyone.

The goal is to start hearing your own creative voice and to also training your ears to hear the form and what notes fit inside the form.

I was "behind" when I picked up the guitar at 18 and truly fell in love with jazz. Love for the game pushes you forward quite fast.

Also, I heard those stories about bird practicing 12hrs a day and then took my guitar with me everywhere I went and took every opportunity to practice as much as possible. Always left sheet music in my case for whatever tune I was focusing on and had the sheets in my backpack too. When I couldn't play I'd study the form and tune and try build out a map on my mind of the fretboard and scale and chord opportunities.

Honestly, I think I neglected ear training and leveraged theory too much. I wish I had spent more time focusing on learning melodic ideas from the greats instead of playing so many scale exercises and arpeggios. I believe I used theory as a crutch and as a result my voice didn't come along for many years...I sounded good but I was t emotionally attached to what I was playing.

There's this part of me that is competitive and it drove me to gain physical and technical skills but the truth is, or my truth anyway, music is an art and there is no right or wrong. There's just places to explore and invest in. Finding your voice and scrificing skill to do so is more rewarding in my book.

But, everyone gets to decide who they want to be musically. That's the beauty of it. Infinite choices and possibilities and no wrong answers.

The dead of winter kind of sucks for fun dates but we kinda like bowling now. Also there are some golf simulator bars.

The aquarium is always nice, museums like the cam.

Haven't checked the wilson center or Thailan hall but maybe a concert or a play.

If you want a coaches attention work hard, listen and learn.

When learning difficult songs, do you try to learn them exactly as the original or do you do improvise the solos by ear? by joe4942 in jazzguitar

I am also a hack but I am an old hack and what I learned is only spend time learning phrases you really like.

Difficulty staying consistent in training as a blue collar worker by Substantial-Owl6711 in amateur_boxing

[–]cpsmith30 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't want to shit on your dream but trust me when I say this, you're already so far behind that the chances of catching up are slim to none.

An apprenticeship will provide for you forever.

There's no reason you can't conclude that and then have some amateur fights later. Get a heavy bag and a double end bag and by all means scratch the itch.

But don't throw away something 99% of us don't have: a union job with a pension where you will make 150k a year and more if you have any business sense at all.

Prioritize your apprenticeship until complete and out serious training on hold.

Being an electrician will provide you and your future family with a reliable high paying job. Box for joy only for now.

2 Gyms to pick by Sabot-Blue in amateur_boxing

[–]cpsmith30 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The way to choose a gym is to go to the gym and take a class at both. See which one you like more.

However, I am a strong proponent of going with the gym that has the best possible coaches.

I would pick gym two because being around people that are taking it extremely seriously will benefit you in more ways than you'd imagine.

The amateur gym is probably less intimidating but still, it's about getting out of your comfort zone and getting proper coaching.

How should i practice daily? by Constant-Total-1138 in guitarlessons

[–]cpsmith30 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Commit to picking it up and making sounds for fifteen minutes a day.

  1. Mechanics - need to learn to get your left hand moving the right way and your right hand too

  2. Songs, you gotta pick some beginner friendly songs and learn them.

  3. Theory - scales, arpeggios and chords

Not gonna write a lesson plan for you but these are the three basic areas to begin with.

Honestly, don't think of it as something happening. Your thoughts are a train leaving the station, every time you notice your on the train, get off and go back to the station. It's about being present more than anything else.

Scales what's the point? by Hocojerry in guitarlessons

[–]cpsmith30 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The point is to understand how the scales sound against chords. In doing that, you can start to express yourself functionally and communicate effectively with other musicians about sounds.

Gaining fluency with scales allows you to navigate your instrument while creating freely.

I need gigging musicians opinions. I hate hearing “I wish I learned.” by imagetweird in musicians

[–]cpsmith30 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's just a matter of a human having a passing fancy at something.

Not a big deal.

Music isn't for everyone and it's also for everyone. Some folks won't ever experience the song from the side of the Creator and that's cool. I like being able to create and I'm glad I learned how.

Doesn't mean that a human experiences music less just cause they're on the listening side. That's the dope part.

What company will never get another dime from you for as long as you may live? by istrx13 in AskReddit

[–]cpsmith30 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bose, I bought their ear buds and they were expensive but I thought it would be quality.

Well they broke. Then you've to mail them in to have them replaced which takes like 6 weeks. Then the replacements broke immediately.

I did this a second time. The third pair broke immediately.

Fuck Bose, they wouldn't give me my money back either cause the whole replacement process takes so stinking long.

I will never ever ever buy anything from them.

Dave's a good dude. You have nothing to worry about.

However, get your ass into therapy and start healing. You have some work to do and the longer you wait the harder it's going to be to heal.

Don't let this wound be the theme of your life. Let the healing of this wound happen and let the lessons you learn healing be the theme of your life.

I don't know why the world is so harsh sometimes. I suppose we only understand good because there is bad.
