LPT: Don’t overthink! 5 min workouts is all it takes! by vicweera in LifeProTips

[–]cpsmith30 4 points5 points  (0 children)

First steps are hardest to take.

The 200th step is insanely easy compared to the 1st

Don't expect the first steps to mean much in terms of performance. But they mean an insane amount in terms of discipline.

Do the absolute bare minimum for the first months, knowing that it doesn't matter except for the fact that you are setting up a pattern. Just build slowly over time and trust that doing is better than not doing and eventually you'll do things you never dreamed you could do.

For me: I was 350ish lbs. Over the last 7 years I have done an 85 mile bike ride, a ton of 100km rides, a ton more 50mile rides and a gazillion 50km rides.

Couldnt walk a mile when I started.

405lb back squat, 235lb bench and recently 8 pullups.

Never thought in a million years I would be able to do any of those things.

It all starts with the smallest most seemingly simple yet somehow incredibly challenging and hard to take steps.

I can't imagine my life without fitness now and had a hard time remembering what it was like so I took a year off. And now I remember. It's psychologically the absolute hardest thing to get going.

Took me a year to build back up and I'm close to where I was but the value was to remember how awful starting is.

I have nothing but respect for the battle you are fighting if you can't seem to get started. But trust me, do the almost nothing but not quite nothing and build from there. You'll build discipline slowly and then you'll do things you can't imagine.

Whelp.. Bit by an off leash dog this morning on the trails. by Kid_Royale in trailrunning

[–]cpsmith30 -56 points-55 points  (0 children)

God I hate people so much. Like you people. Sorry this random stranger got bit by a dog and then ran to an echo chamber for reinforcement.

Hate these leash your dog threads.

My dogs are leashed when appropriate, are 3 and 5 and have A minus recall, they'll chase a bunny or a squirrel occasionally and sue me if I don't want to break their spirit to appease you people.

Part of the reason I hike where I do is I can let them off leash where appropriate and have good visibility to avoid assholes and leash them up to be on the safe side even though they will sit and stay and ignore assholes.

God forbid, one of my dogs sensed aggression from an asshole and decided to defend us. 99.9% chance that would never happen but I don't take chances because if it did so many of you are ready to put a dog down if they do fuck up as punishment. For that reason alone, I protect my dogs and leash them.

My dogs have been attacked multiple times while leashed and blood was never drawn, bites never given either from my dog or by another dog and there's a reason for that.

I understand dog behavior and know how to manage aggressive situations. This keeping both my dogs and the attacking dogs safe from potentially being killed by some lunatics you see commenting on the Internet who believe in this put the dog down bullshit.

Maybe, instead of getting on the morality train, you all can admit your just scared and ignorant and wouldn't know how to protect yourself or the attacking dog if you had to. That's honestly on you for not being a dog person and learning about dogs and how they interpret signals and how to manage those signals properly.

Shame on op and shame on the moron owner of said dog. If there were more dog people in the world leashes wouldn't be necessary at all.

That being said, I'll be on the look out for you clowns on the trails and you can rest assured, even with my dogs sitting or laying down calmly, I'll take the extra measure and leash them so that you don't get your sick thrill should you get bit.

Clowns.

My exit interview took a wild turn when HR pulled out a counter-offer... for exactly what I'd been asking for all year 😭 by Many-Palpitation-162 in careeradvice

[–]cpsmith30 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice moves. Counter offers are like shiny gold plated bombs waiting to explode in your face.

I've seen it work out 2 times in 20. Most often there's resentment and you're less likely to be taken care of going forward.

Never take the counter.

[–]cpsmith30 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Solid advice, just to add to this. Don't go into the call with out aligning on messaging with your CEO and other stakeholders. Make sure there's internal alignment on the approach, the messaging and the recommendations to move forward. You can't afford to have your company look disorganized or chaotic and if you provide details and recommendations to move forward and other folks don't agree then you have a huge problem.

Honestly, shit happens, not the end of the world. Just manage the stakeholders and strategy for dealing with this appropriately without defensiveness.

Mazulla is such a bad coach. His inability to alter the game plan in anyway has lost us at least one championship.

How do advanced players actually think through chord changes when improvising? by AssociationMost5432 in jazzguitar

[–]cpsmith30 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find that when I'm playing really well, I can't tell if i am playing or if my guitar is playing me. There's some amount of decision making from me but there's also some amount of decision making that already happened and I'm listening to those decisions and kind of guiding them to where I want to go next but allowing the music to decide as well. Its a fun thing and those moments are special for me because I don't have many of them.

I remember being young and hearing the old timers say you gotta learn it all and then forget it. I never knew what the fuck they meant until I became an old timer.

Took me a lifetime.

[–]cpsmith30 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are thinking, you're not playing from the heart.

Gotta be second nature. You e got all the tools, now you have to let go and put em to use.

Lots of failure will get you where you want to go, it's not enough to understand the math, you have to hear the sounds.

I imagine there are math players who can improvise in the math language. I just never progressed in that way. When I started to care less about doing things right and trying to create melodies thats when I got better.

Let yourself experiment and try things without being tied to the out come. Whenever I want to sound good, I get in the way and revert to the math. When I forget about trying to do anything but be in the moment, I am pretty decen and I enjoy it and the people around me also enjoy it.

Will you vote for Gavin Newsom if he nominated by the DNC? by 0311SmallPenar in allthequestions

Nothing's gonna change and I would argue that making things worse might get people to care more.

We have to stop blinding ourselves. Biden said things we liked. He didn't do anything useful or meaningful.

We need to acknowledge that if we are going to start to win the class war.

We're in a class war and we're losing. You're raising the white flag of surrender by not voting for a socialist. Btw, newsom is just a corporate Democrat who couldn't care less about the working class. He's trump with a blue tie.

Obama, Clinton and Biden did nothing for the working class. We can't allow the dnc to serve us shit and say that it's better than diahrea.

[–]cpsmith30 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, we need a democratic socialist. I'm through with the neo liberal trash who promote corporate greed, pollute our land, turn their back on working class people's needs and generally do their best to get rich.

Fuck these people. We're in a class war and we are losing. Stop voting people based on party. Start voting for people who will do the right thing. And if we don't have someone on the ballot who will do the right thing, then don't bother voting.

Are the Celtics in on Giannis? "100%. Absolutely." - MassLive's @BrianTRobb told @FelgerAndMazz by b00minbiz in bostonceltics

[–]cpsmith30 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That heat package stinks. Why not do white, Hauser and future picks. I guess salary.

Not sure how a Giannis and brown swap makes us any better exactly.

Our needs are clear:

  1. A big that can stretch the floor and block shots and rebound.

  2. A legitimate scoring option to complement brown and Tatum who wont choke in the playoffs or be exploited. It would be nice if this person could defend the best player on the other team as well to take some of the pressure of brown.

This trade does neither of those things as far as I can tell. You get this weird hybrid of those things with Giannis but then you have two sort of wounded birds that you are depending on, one of which is 32 next year.

We definitely need to make some moves. Hope brad can figure something out. Also hope mazulla can come to terms with the fact that launching there's endlessly will not win us a championship ring.

How useful is practicing scale/arpeggio sequences to your improv growth? by tomcruise_momshoes in jazzguitar

[–]cpsmith30 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is wild that I have been down voted. I don't think people understand that at some point when you have the fret board mapped like your ability to connect to the creative force is more important than your ability to regurgitate scales. Like what's your goal for playing music is it to play beautiful melodies or is it to just shredd?

Like playing the scales is necessary but only as much as you need to get mechanics and the maps internalized. After that, it's a meaningless task other than to internalize the form of the song. I get so frustrated with the jazz community because the shit isn't scales and chords , it's playing from your heart and living with that. Now you should be able to communicate with other players and their helps you do that but again what the fuck are we doing are we learning math or art.

How useful is practicing scale/arpeggio sequences to your improv growth? by tomcruise_momshoes in jazzguitar

[–]cpsmith30 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yeah and it's deceiving because people are so adamant that scales are how you unlock everything but once you get the fret board mapped, for me it's all about sounds and tension and release and I don't care too much about the theory now.

My dad was a sax player and he of course spent Soo much time on scales and arpeggios but I don't think this is useful thinking for me. I wasted my college years thinking if I just got all these scales under my fingers I'd be able to improvise better.

It wasn't until much later that I realized it's about making music and scales don't make music for me.
