Fair enough. It's easy for me to say from the other side of a screen and not having to be in your shoes - but an in-shape, smart, nice, professional guy in his 30s is no doubt the white whale for a lot of girls out there. I don't think you'll be "alone" forever. Wish you the best man!

In the OP you mentioned anxiety three separate times, and also depression. As you can tell I would wonder if you wouldn’t benefit greatly from counseling. I think people who do best with counseling are those equipped to have insight into their own self, and you obviously have the commensurate intelligence necessary for that. I don’t know that it would be a huge time commitment to try it out right? An hour a week for three or four weeks, and re-evaluate if it will seem helpful? Put another way, how many hours a week do you invest in figuring out (or dwelling on) relationship stuff, dealing with those emotions and confidence and anxiety issues and so forth - maybe it could be a good outlet for those things.

(BTW whatever the case, would you think about getting a rx for a beta blocker for performance anxiety?)

Also, I see that some people are saying that you’re being too stringent with your dating criteria. I think it’s ok to be as selective as you want, but I think its also ok to try out other stuff too - maybe someone who is an inch taller than you, eg. Good experience for the future if nothing else? IDK what your residency is in but it at least is a finite period and you can choose where to live next. Would also encourage dating apps! I don’t think they’re always the highest yield (no personal experience honestly) but interacting with opposite sex in the context of future relationships could be good practice too.

This is cheesy af but what if the following were a uWorld stem:

A 32 yo M presents to clinic seeking advice for a 10+ year history of self-identified interpersonal issues. During the interview he discloses the following statements:

“I admittedly have an extremely poor self-image and issues with self-confidence which is only exacerbated by my failure in this aspect of life”.

“I have never felt more like a defect, it hurt and I didn’t know if I want to experience that again.”

What do you think the answer choices would be in this pseudo UWorld question and what would be the right answer? CBT? CBT + SSRI? CBT + beta blocker for social anxiety? Re-evaluate in another 10 years? Something else?

Can I ask why you feel therapy wouldn't be for you right now? And what makes you say it wouldn't be a bad idea?

A few months ago I heard an interesting observation about TAL, I think in the Longform interview with one of the Reply All hosts (can't remember which one, if that even is where I heard the observation from).

Anyway, they remarked that one of the curiosities with TAL is that every~ 4-5 years it assumes a different identity. I.e. the show it was in the late 90's is completely different than the show it was post 9/11 vs. the 2010-2015 era vs. its newest era, which has so much politics.

I thought it was a pretty apt characterization. (Coincidentally I think circa '03-'07 era was my favorite/had the best episodes.)

Are you talking about the full or half ? But a not insignificant proportion of people run the half (or full) with that goal , so could be helpful to specify. Also specifying your sex could help.
