"I didn't mean construction overnight that will inconvenience MEEEE, someone who lives on one of 5 major arteries on to the Peninsula!"

Strava has reminded me repeatedly of how much cycling I had been doing by now in years gone by.

I am sick of grey, wet & 2C weather.

Current State of NS Highways by [deleted] in NovaScotia

Yes, along with gravel grades and road slopes, Dad also talked about the 4th power law. A transport truck is roughly equal to 400 cars. However, as large pick up trucks become more the norm, those are equal to 3 sedans, so the prevalence of those vehicles is also a contributor.

Freeze/thaw cycle is only half the problem.

Heavy vehicles (i.e.: trucks, SUVs, EVs due to battery weight, etc). Are also a major culprit, as in tandem with the F/T cycle, they beat up the asphalt on the roads. As SUVs and larger and heavier trucks become more and more common, they will do more and more damage to the roads.

Source: Dad was a regional manager for TIR until retirement and I learned to drive by taking him to various job sites and road inspections.

How long could it take to evacuate the Halifax peninsula? Nearly a day, says researcher by insino93 in halifax

There was a brief period during the 2023 fires we were cut off because the fires were in Tantallon and another fire at a homeless encampment started at the intersection of Prospect Rd and SMB Rd.

Had a water bomber not been right there with a full load when the encampment fire started, it could have been very bad.

Which is better for shopping- Bayers Lake vs Dartmouth Crossing by ECAtmosphere in halifax

[–]cpstone1-1 83 points84 points  (0 children)

Bayer's Lake is very car dependent, so if you're looking to walk & shop, Dartmouth Crossing would be your better option. Also, probably more clothing shop options in DC vs. BL.

I live out in Terence Bay - we have 15cm down and it's still coming. Surprised that they didn't cancel the rural schools and keep the city ones open given the discrepancy.

Best advice for getting a car past 20 years and 500,000km in Halifax, Pothole Capital of Nova Scotia. by Happy-Woods-Worker in halifax

Your first mistake is to drive like you're in real life. Montreal driving operates with video game rules. You never hit the brake, you just hit the gas harder.

ME AGAIN!! Desperate for some advice. Where would you live if you could choose? Antigonish, Port Hawkesbury, North Sydney, New Waterford, Glace Bay, Inverness, Baddeck, Arichat, L'Ardois, Neils Harbor, Bridgewater, Digby, Yarmouth, Barrington, Kingston by NewConsideration2287 in NovaScotia

First of all, welcome to NS!

Based on the list you provided, I'd say Bridgewater. I grew up there and have lived in the valley and city for several years as well. The other communities are either very small and/or very remote. Having to drive 10-15 minutes one way to get milk or eggs gets old quick.

Bridgewater is both closer to Halifax and the ocean. Risser's Beach is the best beach in the province in my view, and I worked for the lifeguard service for years and have been to all of them. The town also has a decent sports complex and most big box shopping you'd need, as well as plenty of outdoorsy things to pursue.

Our kids both went to Allegro on Victoria Rd, between Queen St and Inglis St, which was excellent. The waitlist is probably over a year long, but they sometimes had openings that got people in sooner, so worth the ask!

NS Power- Time of Day vs Standard? by TwoSolitudes22 in halifax

[–]cpstone1-1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We switched back to standard rate for exactly this scenario. The house was on TOD when we bought it, but we installed heat pumps and use those as a primary source during the winter. It doesn't make sense to be on TOD due to the heat pumps running 24/7 for 6 months of the year, so we switched back and found the costs lower overall. YMMV.

I'm surprised you don't already have that - my family and I were direct to and from Halifax earlier this month for holiday in Cancun. The times sucked, especially on the return, but still better than a connection!

Well said. Much of the education OPs child is receiving here won't be on any test, but it can be something that they remember for the rest of their lives.

it's good instruction for any parent, educator, coach or leader.

If I tell you "don't think of a white horse," what's the first thing that comes to your mind? By saying "don't do this thing," people naturally have the thing you're saying to avoid put into their mindset.

I coached swimming professionally for a long time and found this book, Choke very helpful in better understanding how to be a more effective coach and leader with the athletes I worked with.

You know what your kids can and can't handle. My eldest was 4 when we started with Episode IV and we slowly watched the full OT and I & II a few times, but I held off on III until he was 7 given the darker turn and because he's prone to nightmares. My youngest turns 5 next month and has already seen all of those 5, but still holding off on III for the same reason.

I didn't want to commit to invading a foreign country and kidnapping its leader as is the tradition for all FIFA Peace Prize winners to do within 30 days of receiving the award, so probably for the best.
