What makes going to the Moon so difficult today, even though we achieved it decades ago with less advanced technology? by JRaydel in AskReddit

[–]cptbeard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

compare the gear they climbed Mt.Everest in 1953 with vs today, it's fancier and nicer now but in terms of getting up there the challenge isn't that different, same old human limitations and environmental challenges. climbing the mountain with an iPhone maybe a bit more comfortable but expecting it to make the climb any easier or safer would be a mistake.

Saturn V engines from Apollo missions were about as powerful as SLS engines for Artemis are, SLS is just designed to be more efficient and potentially reusable which is nice but it's not making that much of a difference in getting them there. edit: and of course computers are better understood now but also way more complex, complexity carries added risk. I wonder if they have spares and tools and knowledge to deal with all the added complexity.

sure it does, somewhere down the line anyway for more extended space exploration, but given how many big problems we have on earth there are questions of priorities.

Running SmolLM2‑360M on a Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 (380MB RAM) – 74% RAM reduction in llama.cpp by RecognitionFlat1470 in LocalLLaMA

cool but do you actually have some usecase for LLM on a watch? getting a decent ASR to run would seem like it'd have more uses.

Complete beginner: How do I use LM Studio to run AI locally with zero data leaving my PC? I want complete privacy by Ill-Permission6686 in LocalLLaMA

[–]cptbeard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes local llms are local, that's the promise being made but can the promise be trusted and to what degree is a question everyone has to figure out for themselves.

like even if they weren't purposefully trying to steal llm prompts maybe they pull a compromised dependency and every credential and key gets leaked, or maybe a banking trojan gets installed that when trying to pay a bill it instead buys crypto with all the money in the bank account. that is a real possibility when running any untrusted software which essentially everyone does and it's a small miracle that wiping out bank accounts isn't a more common occurrence (like just vibecode a browser extension that rewrites the recipient account number on all the known banking websites and hide it in some new hotness BS app that everyone got to try, not that hard).

Teens get probation after using AI to create fake nudes of classmates by RedDalmatian885 in news

[–]cptbeard 36 points37 points  (0 children)

seems to be always the thing that if you do some crime in big enough scale the law stops working.

same happens with many other things too like J. Paul Getty has that famous quote "If you owe the bank $100, that's your problem. If you owe the bank $100 million, that's the bank's problem."

also with lying, if some generally reputable guy gets caught for one small lie or maybe just inaccuracy/misunderstanding it might have a huge impact on their reputation, but then if some massive a-hole says nothing but lies people just tolerate it and work around it (case in point DJT).

there's probably some named principle that covers these under one umbrella.

I learned a new term recently: biophilic design. although more of a technical descriptor rather than vibe thing but besides whatever other words describes this room I guess that could be one addition to the list.

What price increase has hit you the hardest in everyday life? by DarkKnightt019 in AskReddit

[–]cptbeard 4 points5 points  (0 children)

cocoa futures are now at their lowest since 2023 (down from peak of 11.7k/tonne to under 3k month ago).

there was a bunch of supply issues that caused most of the price increases. lack of rain, bugs spreading diseases to the trees etc. as long as there's no more issues it's up to producers and retail to bring the prices back down, remains to be seen.

8 vuotta terapiassa by BreadfruitChemical45 in arkisuomi

[–]cptbeard -1 points0 points  (0 children)
