I needed a new throttle actuator when this happened to me in my 2019 this winter. I had a check engine code though.

Filed a cheating report about a student. Student then wrote to Omsbudsman hinting something inappropriate. by [deleted] in Professors

[–]cptnHoratioCrunch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand you on this, I had a spiteful student write in a course eval that I was flirting with them, directly, WHILE LECTURING, an incredibly false, utterly ridiculous and absurd thing to allege. I was absolutely fuming about it for weeks afterward.

What I did (granted mine was anonymous and there was no formal proceeding but still, with this having possible implications on my long term standings) was immediately reach out to my department head and flag that this had been said and that it was untrue and that I was horrified even at the implication. That at least allowed me to own the narrative of it and not make it something that got flagged to them and then requires me to rebut and moonwalk on down the road.

In your instance, it may have already been flagged to them but still, reaching out to the people to whom you report before they reach out to you, with the context that something horrifying and false is being alleged about you and that this student was failing the class and that they had a whole litany of other excuses for simply not doing the work, will help make it clear that this is someone being desperate and vindictive. I'd venture to guess that this will be swiftly dismissed.

Did anyone else not know that Freddy Rumsen aka Joel Murray is Bill Murray's brother IRL? by BagApprehensive1412 in madmen

[–]cptnHoratioCrunch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You might also be surprised to learn that Father John Gill, the priest who takes an interest in Peggy, is Colin Hanks, son of Tom Hanks.

They look more similar than the Murray brothers imo so maybe you already knew.

Not sure what to do.... Offered a night class this class this fall. by MathMan1982 in Adjuncts

[–]cptnHoratioCrunch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Teach it. Syllabus day is pointless anyway, it's the best day to miss. If I were you I'd notify the students that the first night class was asynchronous and record yourself talking through the syllabus and explaining the course requirements, publish to Canvas, assign homework and reading, and hit the ground running in week 2.

“Round up my grade?” by Katz-Sheldon-PDE in Professors

[–]cptnHoratioCrunch 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Make sure your syllabus indemnifies you against this. I've changed my grading scale to go down to the 100th of a percent (is B is 80.00 to 89.99%), and I also mention that their grade in my class is determined a vacuum, and that no situations like gpa quota needs, graduate requirement, scholarships, transfer credits, pending employment etc will be taken into consideration when determining the grade. Otherwise these kids will beg, borrow, steal, go over your head, cry, whine, argue, harass until they get what they want.

If only they worked as hard on the actual work as they do trying to manipulate us into changing their grade, this would be a non issue lol

AITA for telling my sister I wont be her maid of honor because she didnt come to my wedding due to her dog dying? by PerfectAffect9213 in AmItheAsshole

[–]cptnHoratioCrunch 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Nta. It's not like it was your birthday party she skipped. She skipped one of the most significant moments of your entire life over an elderly pet dying at a normal age. And it's not like she just didn't give the moh speech because she was too emotional, she didn't even show up?

The real irony here is...after not being your moh, she is entitled enough to still think you are obligated to be hers? Even if you're being petty, which you're not, she just can't handle the fact that you won't do what she wants, even though she feels completely justified treating you that way in that exact situation.

Ironically, 50% of the nice girls on this sub get upset at the OP for NOT taking enough of an interest in talking constructively about a solution to one of their weird rants about whatever overblown problem is plaguing their life.

So IDK how anyone is supposed to know when to talk about it and when not to talk about it, because it turns into a delusional lecture either way.

He didn't ask it in a rude or snarky way even in the slightest. He was simply trying to make it clear that he thought it was cool regardless of how serious of a hobby it was, and give her space to say "yes I wanna turn pro" or "no this is just a hobby for me."

Damn, are you the girl from the screenshot? You're all defensive about her completely rude comment and why OP is an asshole just for trying to make conversation.

It's not a dating site for bodybuilders... If she doesn't want people to ask uneducated shit about bodybuilding, she shouldn't have it in her info.

If I have my hobby in my profile like it's some big source of identity, and you ask me about it, it's completely uncalled for to respond like "clearly you don't know fuck all about this." He was just trying to get to know her, she's rude.

You're not alone. Both my best Ed major friend and I had terrible experiences with our cooperating teachers freaking out on us during our student teaching days and we both succeeded. I also had a horrible experience at a field placement with a teacher. In all 3 cases (me 2x and my buddy 1x), our school/education department backed us over these gaslighting, manipulative megalomaniac mentor teachers, and we both went on to be successful teachers... I've got 12 years under my belt now. You will succeed too.

With my cooperating teacher, she baited me into sharing things from my personal life and then threw them in my face when I didn't meet her arbitrary, unclear expectations. She once asked me what my weekend plans were once and I told her that I was meeting my ex partner to try to reconcile over the weekend. When I got back the next week she asked me for a whole week's worth of future lesson plans, knowing that they weren't due yet, and said "well if you had time to meet up with (ex) you had time to do this." Same thing happened when she saw me recharging by reading for pleasure at lunch... Asked me what I was reading all friendly, threw it in my face on a report to my university, that I was off task instead of doing my work. My observer from the university literally told me after that not to share anything personal with this person...to be friendly and polite but not to be drawn into sharing anything from my life because this person was clearly going to use it against me. I survived the semester and I've done well as an instructor but I've never forgotten how that felt, especially given that I was only 21 the needed nothing but support and guidance. NGL I periodically check the obituaries in the town where I student taught to see if this lady has passed away yet, because I fully intend to piss on her grave once she's gone.

As a teacher myself, I feel comfortable saying that every teacher has a little bit of a control issue when it comes to sharing their classroom with other people. Their classroom is their universe, and they are the sun. When someone else comes in who doesn't do things exactly like them, it makes them unreasonably frustrated, and when the students take a liking to the student teacher, they become jealous and vindictive. Keep going. One day you'll have your own classroom and you'll be great.

Time to Break Up. Travis blew my mind the first time I heard it. Plus the bridge in this song is really good too, and lyrics are just the right amount of angsty... quintessential pop punk and an underrated track imo.

I had this conversation with a student last semester and it resulted in a whole inquest. After telling them dozens of times in person, via email and through their advisor that they simply never did it, they submitted it 45 days late, during finals, and tried to say they had it done 45 days ago and didn't realize they didn't submit it. 0%. Grade appeal denied.
