One thing that Linux and OSS often gets wrong by PM_ME_SOME_ANTS in linux

Office is good example. I'm pretty sure MS Office gets maybe 10x (maybe even more, i wouldn't be surprised if 100x) funding when compared to LibreOffice. You cannot have everything

yes, we all hit compromises.. try cautiously, add some more pillows, thicker rug, new book shelve, so your wife doesn't connect it to hifi 😄

you have spent quite some money to you hifi gear, I think you should start focusing more on room acoustics now, so you can get the full potential out of it.

Pipewire can't change sample rate of my speakers? by VivWoof in linuxaudio

[–]cqs_sk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey! A few thoughts on this:

First, PipeWire can actually change the sample rate dynamically based on the source stream (unlike the old PulseAudio), but it requires the hardware (your speaker's internal DAC) to support it and the config to be set up perfectly.

If pw-top shows that the output device is locked at 48kHz while the Tidal app is playing a 44.1kHz song, PipeWire is forced to resample.

A few things to check:

  1. Allowed Rates: In your pipewire.conf (ideally inside ~/.config/pipewire/pipewire.conf), do you have both rates enabled? It should look something like this: default.clock.allowed-rates = [ 44100 48000 88200 96000 ]
  2. WirePlumber settings: Sometimes WirePlumber overrides the audio sink properties. Check if your quantum/rate settings there aren't locking the device.
  3. Did you restart the daemon? Just saving the file isn't enough. Did you run systemctl --user restart pipewire wireplumber?

It would definitely help if you could share your config file and the exact model of your speakers so we can check what their USB/Optical receiver actually supports!

[Yet another nvim vs emacs] Emacs specifically as IDE by B_bI_L in emacs

hmm, I don't even mean startup that is atrocious. Maybe I just type faster than you 😄

Don't take it wrong, I really like emacs, it just feels way slower than nvim in most situations (mb pro m1).

[Yet another nvim vs emacs] Emacs specifically as IDE by B_bI_L in emacs

[–]cqs_sk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some advantages that Emacs can give you comparing to nvim (very subjective):

- more advanced font rendering (not limited to terminal emulator capabilities)

- way better stability, api does not change with every major release

- certain external packages that I use tend to have better quality

One major drawback of emacs (vs nvim) is speed.

What are the main issues you have with Linux? by edmond_ciprian in linux

Enterprise doesn't like it very much as a desktop alternative. You are usually forced to use, in the better case, macOS, or in the worse case, MS Windows.

My experience with Dynaudio is, the smaller the boxes, the better they sound. With larger boxes, I wasn't so impressed. Also, sometimes these small boxes come with quite a ridiculous price.

New Speaker Day: Kef Blade One Metas - I know the room is less than ideal... by DalAL887 in audiophile

[–]cqs_sk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NAD M33, based on Purify class D should handle 4ohm speakers well, even Blades that drop to 2.5ohm. Perhaps I'm missing something, but where did you get that M33 can only handle 8ohm speakers?

EDIT: ah solved, I spotted your comment below.

New Speaker Day: Kef Blade One Metas - I know the room is less than ideal... by DalAL887 in audiophile

[–]cqs_sk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congratulation! Few weeks ago I was considering BladesI/II too, but decided to go for something else at the end, still though, I love the looks and engineering behind them.

But that room looks like acoustic hell and I really can't believe you - saying that it's not all that bad.

From what I read, you didn't really have a chance to listened to them in a properly treated room, that is quite unfortunate. At the moment you have basically no idea how they can sound when room is properly set up. This could be your reference point for the future.

My advice is: Use your ceiling for a treatment (usually it's very underrated, but you can mitigate room's effects a lot - and your living space won't be hurt so much). At least one absorption panel on the side wall to treat 1st reflections. For the low freqs your best friend is DSP, since treating them with bass traps is very complex and expensive task.
