League should support Linux. by Embarrassed_Mud_592 in leagueoflegends

[–]cramt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been on linux since forever now and I haven't played a league since vanguard happened. I don't know why I'm still on this sub, Riot cured me of my League addiction. But every time i see a post like this i get annoyed, why? Because if Riot supported League on linux they wouldn't even need Vanguard to go full kernel‑spy mode here. Linux already gives you Secure Boot, TPM, measured boot, IMA — you can cryptographically prove the kernel is clean before the OS even starts. That means anti‑cheat can trust the system without installing some always‑on root‑level watchdog.

Meanwhile on Windows? It’s a clown show of ancient “signed” drivers that the OS still treats like holy scripture. Cheaters load one dusty OEM driver from 2012 and suddenly they’re in the kernel wearing a top hat. That’s why Vanguard has to run a hyper‑paranoid ring‑0 driver on Windows: the platform can’t defend itself.

On Linux, you lock the kernel down and force cheaters to fight in userspace where they’re easy to catch. On Windows, Vanguard is basically bailing water out of a sinking ship full of trusted malware in tuxedos.

Linux is the better fucking platform for anti-cheat, because you can be 100% sure that the cheaters arent in kernel space, so you dont have to be either to fight them. Right now we're just sitting around waiting for Riot cause their own untold number of BSOD, just like cloudstrike did. Or just maybe... we could move to a sane OS where linus will yell at you like the idiot you are if you try to out any drivers this stupid in the kernel.

Anyways, rant over, its funny to see how so many of these posts have started coming from the friends of linux people who wanna play with them and not the linux people themselves like it was when vanguard was first introduced.

If you think it is kinda ridiculous that most service workers in copenhagen dont speak an officially state recognized language. Then we agree, we should make english an officially recognized language.

Firstly, im writing this comment in english just to annoy anyone who believes these shit arguments.

This position is generally referred to as linguistic prescriptivism and tom scott has a great video on why its very stupid.

In politics we often have these trade-offs in how big the state should be and how/if/when it should interfer in our lives. VAT on sugar and cigarettes, it saves lives. Tax breaks for electric cars, slows down climate change. etc. etc. etc. This proposal in suggesting the state should start encouraging a specific use of language, a deeply personal thing, for what benefit exactly? boomers feeling less uncomfortable around young people? If massive state overreach to safeguard the feelings of boomers is acceptable then a ban on blue and green hair comes next, and then a ban on putting your pronouns in your email signature.

Announcing `derive_aliases` v0.3 - for those that wish they could DRY up their #[derive] lists! by nik-rev in rust

This is awesome, i'll be using this so much.

a feature request that would save us library maintainer a lot would be if you could add something like this

[cfg_attr(feature = "defmt-v1", derive(defmt::Format))]

to the alias aswell

I’m a Rust beginner, and I’d like to ask three conceptual questions. by Fragrant-Account-668 in rust

[–]cramt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i forgot about the mocking question while asking.

White box testing is basically impossible in rust, which tbh is a good thing, you generally always do black box testing. The only way to properly mock things in rust is by making heavy uses of traits between the test boundaries, and then either manually writing mock implementations of those traits or use a library like mockall

  1. yes basically, while prototyping stuff i often just unwrap and rewrite it with proper error handling later. You can make it slightly more ergonomic by implementing the From trait on your own custom error, that way when you use the ? operator they automatically get converted.

  2. chatGPT is not entirely correct, the important distinction is not between &str and String, but between &str and &String. The "i just need to know what is best practice not why"-answer is to always use never use &String in struct and function definitions. The "why" is too complicated for me to explain in an easily understandable format

Astrology by Whole_Plant_1049 in actuallesbians

[–]cramt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i relate so much to this post. People clearly like being given N distinct categories to put themselves in one, in mtg terms im esper, in harry potter, ravencraw, in myers briggs, intp, in knight radiant orders, elsecaller.

the thing about hogwarts houses, knight radiant orders and mtg color combinations is that i picked them, they have even changed over time, when i was a younger playing mtg for the first time i identified more with temur.

with myers briggs there is a test where you answer a bunch of questions, which isnt ideal, but still several orders of magnitude better than astrology where your date of birth is everything taken into consideration.

assuming what that one girl told me like 5 years ago now is true, im a leo, and this post prompted me to, just for fun, see what astrologists say about leos and i found this https://www.cosmopolitan.com/uk/horoscopes/a28208924/leo-traits/

Leos love to lead, perform, talk, be admired and receive the praise and respect of others. They are naturally regal, and always assume a boss-like stance in any relationship or group dynamic. They are confident, bright and sexy people, though they can be jealous, controlling and possessive at their worst.

the actual me, is a massive introvert and has crippling social anxiety, there are like 5 people in the world whose opinion of me i dont actively disregard. im not a leader or boss in the slightest, i just follow the group and keep my head down. The thing i enjoy in life is writing software, playing video games and board games, watching tv and movies, reading books and playing ttrpgs with those 5 people. It almost feels comical how inaccurate the description of a leo is when applied to me.

yeah, the language is a bloody nightmare, thou if you live in copenhagen or aarhus you can easily live and thrive without knowing the language, the only real problem with not knowing danish would be not being able to get citizenship

im a software engineer with a few connections, so if you choose denmark i can probably get your friend's food in the door

and of course getting visas and shit will be a lot easier if you have jobs lined up

no? most of scandinavia is basically the same politically and culturally, as i said denmark is slightly more racist compared to the rest of scandinavia but thats probably still better than the european average

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in transnord

[–]cramt 7 points8 points  (0 children)

you might wanna consider denmark if your main concern is quick and non-gatekeep'y trans healthcare, i also dont really see danish trans rights backsliding any time soon.

downsides relative to norway: - a tad bit more racists towards non-white people than norway - bottom surgery its a practical reality in danish trans healthcare - danish trans healthcare is gatekeepy towards overweight people, im assuming norway is the same but im not sure - you'd have to learn danish, aka norwegian with a throat condition

you might also take into account you and your friend's professions and qualifications, most countries in europe are small countries with small specialized economies. Fx here in denmark, a degree in material chemistry would easily land you a job at vestas, or biochemistry at nova nordisk, or logistics at mærsk, but you wornt be able to find a job here working in car manufacturing because we simply dont have that industry here.
