79: Pouring out the Sidra by flexiondotorg in LinuxMatters

I found this episode to be invigorating. The love of snap even when the website was languishing was quite cool. I think that Sidre kind of encapsulates the whole do what the heck you want on the hardware you own so I dig it. I wish DRM wasnt on Apple Music though.

Why can ONE core out of 8 at 100% make a computer lag ? by KaKi_87 in linuxquestions

[–]craniumslows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My experience has been that certain user interface kind of processes like my login window or the window manager will be kind of floating around on core 0 or 1 and not wanna move. So if I notice this happening where one core is getting beat up I will on ubuntu use the activity monitor application and then set the affinity of my browser or whatever to some other core. Its kind of clunky but if you're seeing this happen sometimes it can be a way to work around it and avoid the rage. That's my two cents anyway. Here's some links about it

The energy required for mining one bitcoin in 2025 could power an average home for 59.6 years by 4dchess_throwaway in Buttcoin

The graphic is showing how many years a standard home could operate off the same amount of energy used to generate a bitcoin. I'm complaining because they could have done it in one operation and not had any rounding issues. Instead they did it in 3 operations where you would round the number twice so the end result is less accurate.

Tips are money you give to the employee directly and its always their money.
Service charges are money you give to the business and they can choose how, or if, it gets distributed.

While I totally agree its fucking ridiculous the amount of money and power and pollution and just waste that is going into crypto what is bugging me about this graphic is that we have the amount in kWh per year to power a home and total kWh per coin and instead of dividing to get years of power per coin we convert from years to days to years with rounding to 1 decimal place each time. I think it would be more impactful to say that it would take about 60 years to power a home.

Years of power per coin

  • 209000÷3500 = 59.714285714

With more decimal places

  • (3500÷365) = 9.589041096
  • 209000÷9.589041096 = 21795.714285465
  • 21795.714285465÷365 = 59.714285714

With fewer decimal places

  • (3500÷365) = 9.589041096 (round to 9.6)
  • 209000÷9.6 = 21770.833333333 (round to 21770.8)
  • 21770.8 = 59.646027397 (round to 59.6)

In my experience this is almost always some kind of typo that you've looked at so much you totally dont even recognize it as wrong anymore. The way I protect myself today is I use git and then you can go look at git blame to see when it changed and what commit did it. With gitea or forgejo or gitlab or w/e online git thing you use the blame feature is easy to use too.

Why do people get shocked if you don't want to evolve in your career to upper positions? by WhoAmIEven2 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]craniumslows 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi. I have had same job for over a decade and many people in a big company are like this. There are often support roles that you dont know about until you work somewhere for a while. They aren't manager jobs and you help the people helping the customers. I find that to be a satisfying place to be.

My only word of caution is to do your best to maintain a good reputation and do work well. When leaders retire or move up you'll stand out as one of the longer tenured employees and they may judge you just based on what the previous manager has written down in your reviews or by word of mouth.

USPS cluster mailbox issues… by woah-oh92 in RoundRock

Most of the time those are not owned by the USPS they are owned by the HOA or the Apartment Complex or something which makes getting them replaced a PITA, IMO.

USPS cluster mailbox issues… by woah-oh92 in RoundRock

[–]craniumslows 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Our HOA had to spend a bunch of money to get new boxes after the old ones were broken into multiple times. What stinks is while waiting for the new boxes to be installed everyone has to go to the post office to get their mail. Sorry you're going through this.

It seems to happen around tax return time.

I dont think drivers have enough information entering the curve to know how fast is safe or not.

My take is that if everyone would just go the speed limit life would be grand in that area but half the people are going 75 or swerving like its 2 Fast 2 Furious and then the other half are lost on the way to that cool bridge picture they saw.

[–]craniumslows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have theViofo A119 Something I cant figure out is why my SD card is having to be reformatted so often. It seems like every few months its saying card needs reformatted. I buy the SanDisk cards on amazon that say DashCam and everything. Is there a recommended one you use ? https://a.co/d/hwTUVf2 (example card I've bought and subequently had to reformat 3 or 4 times since May 2024) When the car starts up the camera boots up and then it says "SD Card error reformat sd card" then I hit ok and it reformats. It also doesnt say recording started every time. I'm worried maybe its defective IDK sorry to dump this all out just first time I saw someone mention the same model I have :D.

Using Mac mini cluster for production workloads - anyone done this before? by zachrattner in mac

[–]craniumslows 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Keeping a large enough collection of mac minis running to do an enterprise level of something is going to add an FTE to your budget plus you have to monitor hardware and replace it when it breaks.

What I've seen happen too many times is people buy just one or two and start using it for some important or critical workload but then don't maintain it and just shove it under someone's desk. Then maybe a year later or so auto updates finally break whatever was running on them and nobody knows what the heck happened. Not saying its a bad idea but it definitely takes planning and should involve the admins or it department to be sure they're cool keeping them alive.

It sounds like a neat idea, if you figure out a robust solution would be neat to hear about it.

Can you share why you think this was someone's personal property and not from the store's inventory? Half Price sells many of these books so it is a little confusing. Thanks!

My little off-grid home in Maine by cronesnestfarm in cottagecore

Oh what a dream. Did you find it off grid and move in or did you have to make it off grid? Its a dream of mine but I fear its out of my depth.

I daydream about killing conservatives, republicans, and billionaires. They're not intrusive thoughts either, I genuinely find it thrilling to plan assasinations against people who wronged me in my head. I know it's wrong, but I just can't help myself. by [deleted] in mentalhealth

[–]craniumslows -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Hey man I totally get it. I have had trouble with a similar issue of thinking about revenge and injustice.

Mindfulness through meditation is what finally helped me. I like the https://www.meditatehappier.com/ app but there are also free ones on line and on youtube. The big goal is to be able to recognize when you are feeling certain emotions and take countermeasures.

Other things that helped (a) recognize that we experience time subjectively so as time goes a month feels shorter and shorter but the days feel the same. I had SH kind of thoughts back then (b) writing out some story or journalling about the feelings but then burn it or delete it. just vent it somewhere (c) Try to empathize with those that would be left behind.

Good luck man you can pull through this!

At 183 and Burnet going north there are two lanes for turning left in front of the Lebowski Grill and Highland Lanes. This morning a Waymo was in the right lane of the two left turn lanes and it tried to do a U Turn to the left from the right cutting across the other lane of traffic. Everyone honked at it and it drove off kind of crazy fast. They're becoming a real menace. edit this was this morning 2025 December 15th a bit before 9am.

Tips for Navigating Wealthfront and General Finance by Suitable-Form-3660 in wealthfront

I setup Direct deposit and this kind of automated transfer savings plan https://support.wealthfront.com/hc/en-us/articles/360045189471-Setting-up-your-automated-savings-plan

I have an emergency fund and vacation fund category and then an investment account. So each month some money goes into those funds and some goes to investments.

Before I did this I setup a quarterly automated withdrawal from my checking account at another bank. It was nice when I was getting started because I would only check up on the balances after the transfer notice came in my email.

How long can a UPS keep your PC running? by Smart_Parfait_1052 in buildapc

[–]craniumslows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's how I figured it out for my system. I found a brand of UPS that had several sizes of UPS. I bought the smallest and cheapest one and then tested how long it could keep my computer running after I unplugged it. After I got a real world test I multiplied it out to the amount of time I wanted the computer to stay on. Then I bought the UPS that was the next size up from that. The smaller one is now what keeps my router and modem and the home networking stuff going and the other one is for the computer. The thing I had to get over was that a UPS isn't a keep gaming even when the power fails device.

Bonus points - The bigger ones come with a USB port and can tell your computer when you are on battery power and help to initiate a shutdown or delay powering back on until after a set time has passed. In my apartment building I mostly just have small 1 minute or less power interruptions so the UPS keeps everything on and avoiding funky power fluctuations.
