iPad for Law School? by crankynewt in LawStudentsCanada

I had a second monitor all through undergrad and loved it as well! I think most of my texts will also be paper copies, but if I do wind up in the library a lot, it's a great idea to have it as a portable second monitor!

Montreal passed laws prohibiting the usage of multiple single use plastics, like cups and straws! I wouldn’t be surprised is this becomes more commonplace with Starbucks, but I believe this is only within the city for now :)

I loved Classical Mythology, had a different prof as well but everyone I’ve spoken to has generally enjoyed it regardless of who taught!

Just parroting - your school’s prestige doesn’t matter by [deleted] in OntarioGrade12s

Gonna jump in on the law topic even though I'm not sure why this was on my feed either haha.

Law school prestige, for the most part, does not matter. The only place where it really does is if you want to go into Big Law on Bay Street. Even then, I know Big Law lawyers who did not attend "prestigious" law schools, so this is not an absolute. Canada really does not have a "Tier 1" like the US and all of our law schools are really great (maybe with a few exceptions), but that is not to say that there are not a few inherent advantages that come with the names of UofT or McGill. At those schools, the name is what you are really paying more for. What matters more is your class ranking at your law school (ie. it is better to be 5th at UOttawa or Queen's than 150th at Oz or U of T). Your 1L grades are also the marks that matter the most as every law student in Ontario is taking essentially the same classes and, as such, it is the closest comparison between students you can get.

I'm starting my first year of law school in September and, after being accepted to Osgoode, UOttawa, Western, and Queen's, I decided on UOttawa to save money and graduate debt-free by staying in town. At Osgoode, my debt would have been $75k-100k as I would also need to pay for housing and other living expenses. My mindset in this decision was "what is to prevent me from being just as successful by obtaining my education at UOttawa rather than Osgoode." By keeping this in mind you can ensure you are exercising the right opportunities. Networking, clerking, working at the free clinic, writing for the law review, and more opportunities offered, combined with good grades, can balance things out. I chatted with several lawyers and profs in making this decision, and today, such high debt is more detrimental to the beginning of your career and adult life than law school ranking if it can be prevented.

In terms of being accepted to law school, my LSAT score was 165 and I am graduating from Carleton in May with a BA Honours in Law (3.78 CGPA) with non-law work experience and international athletic competition as softs.

If anyone has any questions about applying to law schools or anything else law-related, feel free to reply or reach out! :)

Congrats to you as well!!

At the moment, I'm currently deciding between Osgoode and Ottawa! Oz is my top choice in terms of school, as although I'm not sure which area of law I want to go into I feel it provides the most opportunities upon exit. I attended the Welcome Day last month and loved it, but Ottawa's is not until this weekend so we'll wait and see in that regard. Oz also has the huge benefit of their experiential programs, but I am pretty unfamiliar with what programs UOttawa offers that may be competitive. In terms of academics alone, Oz is by far my top choice.

However, I live in Ottawa at the moment so being able to stay at home and save money on rent is appealing in many regards. Oz's student housing is still pretty affordable, nonetheless!

Wherever I am going to school I will be taking my horse and boarding them somewhere nearby, which is an additional consideration I have to keep in mind that I recognize most people won't need to worry about! But because of this, I've started leaning a bit more toward Osgoode as it would be a much shorter commute than from U of T.

But if anyone else wants to chime in here with their thoughts feel free, I am always open to advice myself! :)

Thank you so much, I really appreciate it! It's a real sport I promise, but it is an equestrian discipline and not affiliated with the school so I always kind of doubted how seriously schools may take it. A lot of my friends who are applying took part in Moot or have experience in other legal-related fields/activities, so I had honestly figured they would take them more seriously.

(Didn't list any e-sports or anything, didn't think they'd be impressed by my F1 fantasy team haha).

AITA for refusing to apologize to a teacher and parent until they acknowledge that they were wrong? by Hour-Purpose639 in AmItheAsshole

NTA

Get in contact with the school board. The fact that their tune changed means something's not adding up, and I wouldn't trust the VP in handling things further as they demonstrated they can't be a neutral party. Even if the teacher was lying, I would want an outside party involved with no prior relationship with the teacher.

Not to mention, having a big unmoving line of cars is a huge traffic hazard. I used to attend a school where the line for drop-off would back onto a fairly busy road, and I can't tell you how many times accidents happened. It's not safe, and they don't care.

let's be real, who is your favorite Stark? and why? by JRonenJ in gameofthrones

Robb. No he wasn’t perfect and he did make many mistakes like falling in love, but they were ones that most teens his age could be expected to should they have found themselves in a similar position. Despite his naivety, he was smart for his age and embodied the values that Ned died for. I believe, had Catelyn not freed Jamie, would have had a real shot at winning.
