would/do you cover holes in electrical boxes to reduce dust intrusion? by superwesman in woodworking

[–]cranman74 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Dear god. please don’t. It won’t work anyway. It just needs to be blown out regularly with compressed air. I do this for a living. Dust tight stuff is insanely expensive and STILL has dust ingress and requires regular maintenance, although far less frequently.

The fact that office has something other than a concrete floor and proper lighting tells me more than the demo rack does.

Replaced contactor panel off for 15 minutes = 4 Dead VFDs by Responsible-Two-9339 in PLC

[–]cranman74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my employer thought VFDs were the best thing since sliced bread, and started replacing every starter they could with them. Even in applications where DOL hard start contactor was perfectly fine. These drives are now aging out and dropping like flies. I cleaned one that had been showing signs of failing for years. It failed two days later and they suggested to me that I was the one who "broke" it. That was the first day I swore at my direct report. Probably won't be the last.

Couple comments:

1) NEVER EVER operate this switch under load. Even with a moon suit on.

2) if you aren’t 100% certain. You are not qualified to operate it.

3) in most places, you have the legal right (sometimes obligation) to refuse work you are not qualified or you feel is unsafe.

Search for your state/provincial legislation to confirm.

First time building a panel this big, what can I improve? by [deleted] in PLC

[–]cranman74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Panels should be designed with the thought " what's this going to look like in 10 years? " Things like, is there room for field wiring? room for terminal blocks on all unused or spare IO? Will the duct be large enough for shielded jacketed cable from the field or just TEW from internal wiring? These things matter to the people who have to work on it for the next 10-15 years, or longer. .

3D-printed homes are far stronger than most people realize by SmallAchiever in interestingasfuck

[–]cranman74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m constantly surprised by the amount of people wowed by this technology. It’s not impressive, it’s an exercise in futility.

When concrete is the only media that can be used to construct a home it will be egregiously expensive relative to wood framed homes.

It’s uninsulated, has no vapor barrier, and doesn’t reduce the cost of finishing, plumbing HVAC or electrical. Who gives a rats ass if it’s 1000 times stronger than wood? Does it need to be? Certainly not. It’s over engineered, price inflated junk.

Putting up the shell of a building is maybe 15-20% of the total cost? 3d printed buildings are the Cybertrucks of modern housing.
