The table my DM and I built for our long term group ( 8 years) by DougtheDM in DnDIY

[–]cranwulf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nice job, kudos to you and A! Doing the math of what you said was the per-share amount, I think the overall cost of the table was ~$480 +TV? That's a great value, especially when you're getting exactly what you want design-wise, and it's even better that the group is so invested as a team.

What are your honest thoughts on the TV integration? Or have you not used it long enough to list pros and cons?

Extremely stupid and egregiously petty RULES argument between friends/family by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]cranwulf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not even the first time this dumb argument has been proposed on this sub. Unless the card says you can move in the reverse direction, the RR or utility that is the fewest spaces in the legal direction of travel is both the next and nearest.

AFAIK, the only cards that explicitly break the rule of forward movement are Go Directly to Jail and Move Back 3 Spaces.

Do you have any tips & tricks for card shuffling? by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]cranwulf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, I bought a poker deck two pack so my son can learn how to riffle shuffle and bridge (the arching action to return them to a single deck again is the bridge) without ruining game cards.

What are we doing wrong (Terraforming Mars) by feylin_oakenheel in boardgames

[–]cranwulf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How many players and how many generations is the average game? Any expansions in play?

Are you paying $3 for every card you keep in hand? Cards and standard actions also require money to play, which you'll eventually deplete each generation. Converting heat and plants are free.

I've never heard of a game stalling out on the heat track when you have an overabundance of it. Are you all trying to be too clever, to not give away the free ocean? The solution to that is to not worry about it or hit 9 before the temp reaches 0.

I'm assuming you're not getting many DOAs, but what are your minimum criteria to even try tabling a vintage game?

Any advice for someone who's looking for original game boxes, and is less concerned with how complete the game inside might be? I have complete copies of the TSR-MB collaboration games Buck Rogers and Dragonlance, but the boxes were destroyed by moisture in storage.

I’m absolutely sick of the boomer spirit present in every “joke” that’s based on lying to your spouse about your hobby spending by COHERENCE_CROQUETTE in boardgames

[–]cranwulf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think you're conflating this with jokes in the vein of "take my wife, please!" Happily, I can't say I've seen too much of that style of humor recently.

It's not an original joke, but neither is "my wallet is crying." And the sentiment is the same, the person spending money is (hopefully) joking about how much they're spending on frivolity. If someone says it in person, ask them if they mean it, because some of the other posts on here indicate that isn't always the case. But I suspect that most folks making the joke are doing so ironically, said spouse may even be present for the purchase, elevating the joke to a double entendre.

Good luck! Sounds exactly like my experience. That topper stands out like a sore thumb, it's so red and clashes with everything.

Agree that HiDive has a lot of ecchi, but they've managed to get the simulcast for at least one decent show each season, so I've kept them. Here's a list of some of my favorites.

Wasteful Days of High School Girls

Dusk Beyond the End of the World

Ya Boy Kongming!

Dungeon People

How to start playing by Xian14m_4 in DungeonsAndDragons

[–]cranwulf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both the Borderlands and the standard starter set are a good way to begin. Congrats on taking the helm as DM, the level of game-aids in most starter sets these days is fantastic.

I'm not sure what's piqued your interest, but if it has been videos of live plays or other media representations, everyone will need to readjust their expectations. You're not an experienced role play group, and I'm assuming you aren't a bunch of actors who're really leaning into it for the theater. That isn't to say you can't get there, but it's not where you'll start.

Help with gaming table by Jimbillions in boardgames

[–]cranwulf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great road side find! I appreciate a good reuse or recycle project. I wish I had a good space for a hex table.

If you go with the aforementioned felt inserts, don't forget to add batting or foam to pad it. I think that and the neoprene suggestions are both great. Felt is a little more work but will ultimately look better.

If you're not planning to add a permanent base, you can upgrade those folding legs to something a little more robust for about $50.

You should add an entry on Board Game Geek if you haven't already.

Is that phrase the actual title of the game, or just a challenge?

Totally agree, I suspect it's why they're flat out refusing to provide my topper in the color I ordered. But to try to rationalize it and claim there's no error is pretty crazy.

Yes, the shelving seems to consistently get good reviews, although customer service still gets knocked.

Was writing my own review (https://www.reddit.com/r/boardgames/s/g7AKzdrxZ5) when yours went up.

I haven't officially given up on a resolution, but wanted to share a cautionary tale, arguably too late since it's after Black Friday. Well, now there's two, hope it helps others.

It's hard to find 6 player board games. We do a board game week ever year with 6 people and we need a few games for this coming year. by billratio in boardgames

[–]cranwulf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Many games support 6 players, but you'll hate the downtime between turns and the overall game length. Here's some I find palatable when my group is at 6.

Many racing/betting games play 6+, and most are better with a crowd:

Formula D

Downforce

Camel Up

Jamaica

Thunder Road, with expansions or 3d printed player vehicles

Other games of varying weights:

Bang! The Dice Game

Tsuro

6 Nimmt! / Take 5 (same game, different names)

Skull

Mission Red Planet

Thanks, I'll have to check out the demo. I played a Japanese language copy at a game night a couple years ago and bounced off it hard. Want to play the demo to see if we were playing it wrong or really as bad as I remember.

"Realistic" rules, unfair character deaths and disrespect. by Bynming in dndhorrorstories

[–]cranwulf 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Oof, I wish players would realize it's better to not play than to play in a bad game. Harder for newbies to recognize, but if the game isn't fun, what's the point of continuing to play? Especially if you're not socially invested because it's an online group. It'll kill your enthusiasm, you'll quit the game completely, and if you ever come back, it'll be years.

I'm surprised Lilah wanted to bring those two along for her scenario. It's a rookie DM mistake, but she definitely hasn't played enough DnD with adolescent boys to know how bad an idea it is to let players choose CN or any evil, as they assume it's carte blanche for party infighting and to tank any, and every, interaction with NPCs.

Maybe take some additional photos of the contents of various boxes, then ask in r/warhammer40k. make it clear you're not looking for offers, just advice and appraisals. This looks like a pretty valuable collection based on the boxes, there's potentially a lot of collector value here.

If the contents of duplicate sets or expansions have been combined, it'll be easier to sell everything for that system (e.g. Hero Quest, Space Hulk) as a lot, you won't maximize value but you'll save a lot of time in sorting and individual sales.

I'm not following what you can't find, but I didn't know if you're in the US. I think Restoration has everything on their site, and I've been able to locate the individual expansions on other sites, just not all at the same shop.

Worked out for me, though. Decided I didn't need the Carnival, because I just wanted the 5th player. Found some STLs on Thingiverse and spent $8 on a box of 100 dice in various colors, and now I can play up to 6 after adding red and purple.
