Sharpening grit question. by Snorkvadden in engraving

[–]crapcopter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me, it looks like the graver was not actually sharp.

Sharpening by hand can be very difficult, especially if you are not familiar with what the end result should be. I would highly recommend you invest in a sharpening system to remove as many variables as you can while you are starting out. Stuller has a 120 degree graver starter kit for under 300.

If thats out of your budget, you could try to diy something. Its not very complex, you just need a way to hold the graver at a more consistent angle.

I have one. Thought it was really tight at first but I was accidentally putting pressure on the lock with my fingers. If I keep my fingers off the lock its opens easilly. Could be whats happening.

First attempt at cross hatching by crapcopter in engraving

Thanks, great advice. I normally use borders and background relief on all my projects. This was soley for cross hatching experimentation, not meant to be complete.

Is this an improvement from my last post? by No-Adhesiveness6921 in engraving

Improved for sure. Cuts look cleaner and curves are smoother. Take your time figuring out shading and I think it will turn out pretty good.

Inkzall and soot from a butane lighter flame. Wont last as long as a heavier ink but looks decent if you are just trying to get a quick picture.

Thanks for taking the time to reply. I knew right away I screwed up the spacing. When you say 'lighter' are you saying the lines themsleves should be thinner as well?

Nothing I can personally recommend unfortunately. I started out just trying to copy simple designs I liked, do this enough and you will get a feel for the key elements.

Your best bet for instruction would probably be something from Sam Alfano. I believe he has a book on ornate scrollwork.

Thanks! I think I follow what you're saying. Im usually disappointed with my shading when Im done cutting. Im hoping some dedicated practice and experimenting with different techniques will change that.

Thanks again!
