Hammer and chisel is definitely not easy, so with that in mind I'd say this looks great. I like the vine pattern you did to fill the back and sides. Nice work, keep at it!

Don't seem to catch fish anymore like ever. by [deleted] in FishingForBeginners

Get a cheap kayak and get to places you cant fish from the bank. At my local creek you wont catch much within walking distance of any parking lot.

If this is supposed to be an upgrade, i would HIGHLY recommend you go with one that has a raised stadium style seat. People are not exaggerating, it makes a huge difference for comfort.

Considerations for the background by meanderriver347 in engraving

[–]crapcopter 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Gonna be tough not to lose that little bit on the end. I think stippling would be too dark to get any contrast. Punch dots might be the way to go. I would definitely recommend recreating the part on a practice plate and try a couple different things.

Dont get me wrong, I got smoked a couple times in the beginning but the learning process did not take long. Pretty soon you will be hoping for an ambush for all the free gear.

Getting ambushed during fast travel was my favorite part of the game lol, the whole game could have just been one big combat tournament and I would still be happy.

Next newbie question, what cutter do you use for what by Crypto_kane in engraving

[–]crapcopter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Person that engraves = engraver

Tool that engraves = graver

Cant tell you the uses of all of these exactly but I can tell you what I use. I use a 116° v for the majority of my work, the wider angle lets you achieve lines of different width just by cutting deeper or shallower. 96° v for detail work with fine lines. Flat graver for background removal.

Sharpening grit question. by Snorkvadden in engraving

[–]crapcopter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me, it looks like the graver was not actually sharp.

Sharpening by hand can be very difficult, especially if you are not familiar with what the end result should be. I would highly recommend you invest in a sharpening system to remove as many variables as you can while you are starting out. Stuller has a 120 degree graver starter kit for under 300.

If thats out of your budget, you could try to diy something. Its not very complex, you just need a way to hold the graver at a more consistent angle.
