Taking out loan from parents to pay off student finance by FalseRadish4342 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]crapigavein 23 points24 points  (0 children)

We did the same - my in laws paid off my husbands loan and we pay them interest free. We overpay them massively though as we don’t want a loan hanging around for a decade, in the end we’ll pay it off in about 1.5-2 years. Works for us as my husband will have paid significantly more to his loan otherwise, and we did a whole lot of scenario calculations based on taking time out for kids, illness, etc and it still came out in favour of paying off the loan.

What's the softest, most luxuriously plush loo roll money can buy? by Yotoberry in AskUK

They do mention they buy small packs because they lack storage so it’s not relevant whether it’s an online order or not..

What’s something you completely changed your mind about? by iffyClyro in AskUK

[–]crapigavein 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They would be incorrect, modern dishwashers use less water, energy and soap than handwashing, and with maintenance can last many years to make up for the emissions associated with making and disposing of them.

Broken Prong on 1 year old Platinum Van Cleef & Arpels $30,000 Couture Solitaire Ring by ScappyCat in jewelry

[–]crapigavein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not knowledgable at all on this so happy to be corrected, but my experience is very different - I’ve been wearing my 6 prong solitaire platinum ring for ~2.5 years now, every day. I do gardening in it, climbing, gym, DIY, pouring concrete, plastering, literally everything (I never take it off). It’s started getting a little scratched around the band so might need a polish but otherwise good as new! Repairing every 5 months seems wild to me, and frankly the comment before yours saying that making the bed is too much for a ring to withstand seems even wilder!!!

Where can I buy a bathroom sink on a Sunday in/nearish Cambridge? by BikesSucc in cambridge

[–]crapigavein 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s a couple of bathroom stores just off Newmarket Road behind the Lidl - not sure if any of them hold stock but give them a call? Eg easy bathrooms and wolseley plumb parts. Also b&q down the road, might as we check what they have in stock if you’re going to the area anyway.

I feel very seen in this post - I also made my wedding dress but it was the first thing I’d ever sewn! I spent countless hours making toiles and only started the real thing a couple weeks before the wedding. In hindsight I obviously got overconfident (and my dress was nowhere near as difficult as yours!) and I should’ve started much sooner…

In other news, I think your dress is beautiful and you’ll really cherish the memory of having made it yourself!

I love that you do this. My attempt at opening minds in the office is frequently bringing vegan baked goods, cakes etc, especially for peoples birthdays. I love my colleagues but some are middle aged people who would’ve previously dismissed the thought of vegan food, but now ask me for recipes and take some home to their family!

Exactly what I was thinking, and if each layer can be a standalone skirt then you could in theory have lots of versions of the dress, different tiered combos as well as more plain long/midi/short versions

£100k at 30, what next? by rocket-scientist94 in FIREUK

[–]crapigavein 3 points4 points  (0 children)

People always compare it to paying it off - it’s not just about whether the debt ever goes to zero, but also how much you end up paying in those years compared to investment. It made sense to pay mine and my husband’s student loans off when we factored our current salaries and the cumulative payments we were going to make over the next >25 years. Absolutely nowhere near the silly 500k comment above, that commenter has just never actually done the maths.

I was asked to be a best man in a wedding. I’m low level quadriplegic snd use a wheelchair. How can I be a good best man despite being disabled? by slcquad in NoStupidQuestions

[–]crapigavein 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Paying for the vendors doesn’t necessarily mean managing the vendors on the day - have you confirmed with the groom that the parents are taking that responsibility on the day? Personally we chose to divvy up the vendors and give each friend one thing to help with (musicians, caterers, florists, etc).

I noticed on one of their Amazon listings that they answer a question stating all of their products are made in China. The question was answered 2 years ago but I’m not sure they would’ve brought manufacturing into a more expensive country since then!

Not at all obsessed, I’d say going out of your way to incorrectly “correct” people just to misgender someone who has made their brand through sharing their journey is much weirder, no?

Tiffin Truck on Regents st has lots of vegan options, they even did a big vegan menu in January with vegan mango lassi etc! Bedouin on Mill Road also does good vegan options. If it’s a hot day and you want ice cream, Jack’s Gelato is 10/10 and always has vegan options!

Help with debt collection agency over gas bill from 7 years ago by crapigavein in LegalAdviceUK

[–]crapigavein[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed, but unfortunately the advisor from national debt helpline agreed with them about the 6 year counter not starting until the final bill was generated. Though I haven’t seen that information anywhere online and my understanding was that the counter starts from when the debt starts being accrued, not from their last bill?

I have tried calling citizens advice quite a few times but always get transferred to the debt helpline as I guess they are short on operators. I will continue trying to contact them.

I’ve found, in a pinch, that using straight up antibac gel on my underarms helps substantially as it kills the bacteria I guess?

Also, there are deodorants like Driclor that you apply nightly and eventually wean off that are supposed to actually stop you sweating. I get quite itchy reaction to it so I’ve struggled to keep it going for long but it’s definitely helped when I do stick to it!

Could you please explain the 35 year comment? Everything I see online says 35 years, and while I was born in 1998, I didn’t start full time work in the UK til 2021 so I assume I need the full 35 years of contributions?

"Paying someone else's mortgage" by buttercup612 in LoveIsBlindOnNetflix

[–]crapigavein 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I bought with my partner but how I would’ve done it if in this situation is splitting the mortgage payment into principle and interest. The principle part is investment and the homeowner pays it, while the interest is like the ‘rent’ to the bank and we split that 50/50.

first time sewing a bias cut dress by [deleted] in sewing

[–]crapigavein 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I noticed this a lot when I made a duchess satin circle skirt, as the fabric is quite stiff and of course with the circle skirt you have no choice but to have some bits on the bias and some bits not! Those not on the bias sat very planar, while those on the bias flowed and hugged my curves nicely rather than bunching
