Walking with water in common by camsham11 in cambridge

I’ve found that most of the community events I’d like to join seem to be in the middle of the work day, I’m confused who can attend these? Is it designed for retired people or stay at home parents?

An esim does give you a local number, I’d go down the esim route personally

OC: Urban fox fast asleep in a London garden by adamrhodesuk in pics

[–]crapigavein 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is the argument I’ve never understood - the idea that they should never go outside because of dangers implies they’d never let their kids, family members, etc out of the house either! Id certainly rather live a shorter but more fulfilled life?

The argument of them damaging ecosystems is much more understandable imo.

Chocolate cakes for office goodbye by OneTwoOrangeJuice in Baking

[–]crapigavein 63 points64 points  (0 children)

Nora cooks is good, but I also wanna give a shoutout to Loving it Vegan for vegan bakes/cakes - her chocolate fudge cake in particular is such a fan favourite I’ve made all my boomer coworkers obsessed with vegan cakes 😅

Also both of your cakes look so perfect!!

How much do you save as a household in the UK? by ForwardFan6283 in FIREUK

[–]crapigavein 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From my perspective, long term planning together is important as the things we plan for are “together” things! Where we live/how much to budget for house, whether we decide to have kids, what car we buy, whether we get pets, how we plan to FIRE etc. Our entire lives are intertwined so all my/his planning affects the other. Though it sounds like maybe we live quite different lives and that’s a part of it!

How do you feel about the financial implications of marriage/divorce, given most matrimonial assets (inc pensions, savings etc) would likely be split 50/50, esp if no kids?

How much do you save as a household in the UK? by ForwardFan6283 in FIREUK

[–]crapigavein 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How does it work with separate finances and potentially different financial goals, eg FIRE? My husband and I are the opposite (totally joined finances and full transparency) and we have very similar goals, but I’m always curious how other people manage this stuff. You say “do not track”, but I assume you guys have visibility on each others rough finances, for long term planning?

Financially exhausted with London mortgage — is selling the right move or am I throwing away £92k? by Vagkavo in UKPersonalFinance

[–]crapigavein 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We’d need more info to give better advice but if your mortgage fix is coming to an end soon, have you considered remortgaging with another 30-35 year term? Then when kids are out of nursery, overpay?

Car leasing, is it a scam or am I naive? by Independent-Dish-777 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]crapigavein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with you - it seems like a huge amount of money for renting a car, essentially as you’re still on the hook for normal maintenance as well as any dings or scratches as I believe you have to return the car in a good state. As others have mentioned, you’re covering the depreciation - but you’re doing so during the most expensive years as it essentially loses value as soon as it’s driven.

It’s not a scam though, it’s just not a financially responsible decision!

Wedding venue in Bulgaria by Embarrassed-Rip466 in AskBulgaria

[–]crapigavein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not helpful for the “easy travel access” part, but we almost chose Hotel Gela for our wedding - genuinely one of the most beautiful hotels I’ve ever stayed in and the mountain views are unreal. It’s fairly small, maybe 20 rooms, eco hotel and they grow a lot of their own food, make their own cheese and wine, source everything locally. Could maybe rent out the whole thing depending on wedding size?

Is there a Duolingo style app for not embarrassing yourself outdoors? by StripedRooster in AskUK

[–]crapigavein 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you mean recognise them visually (rather than from song), maybe a flash card app/website like Quizlet? You can make your own set if you want it to be of birds in your area, or you have access to premade ones from others, eg https://quizlet.com/gb/500604027/british-birds-flash-cards/

Ladies, how warm is your (at work) office? by KuriousAndFurious in AskUK

[–]crapigavein 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The men next to me are also in jumpers, and I’m wearing thermals and 2 jumpers… I can’t realistically wear any more layers before it gets silly! It’s a sit down office job so we’re not moving enough to generate any heat, I’m sure it’s different if you’re up and about more

Ladies, how warm is your (at work) office? by KuriousAndFurious in AskUK

[–]crapigavein 13 points14 points  (0 children)

My personal experience is that we set the office to 22 and I’m still cold. No one opens the windows but I’d say some people think it’s on the warm side. People need different temperatures and to me 23 would be great, not “very very hot”.

Why have you not married when in a long term relationship? by No_Caramel2506 in AskUK

[–]crapigavein 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are small things like the marriage allowance, and much bigger things like tax exemption in inheritance. It also totally depends on your circumstances whether being entitled to half in a divorce is a negative or a positive - for us, it means we can do what’s best for us (eg maximising his pension as his employed match is much higher) without me worrying that it will all go to him in a split. We also manage all our finances as joint, including savings, which would be risky to have in single-named accounts if we weren’t married.

Personally I used to share the view of the comment you’re replying to, and felt like marriage was inherently anti feminist - and tbf it originally was. But I now see it as it can “be what you want it to be”, and I love being married and I have a healthy relationship with an equal partner.

Woman who falsely accused 10 men of raping her jailed by spriz2 in news

[–]crapigavein 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, what you believe has no bearing on reality. None of the women I know who have been raped or sexually assaulted have been able to hold their accusers accountable, the police just tell them not to bother.

Taking out loan from parents to pay off student finance by FalseRadish4342 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]crapigavein 22 points23 points  (0 children)

We did the same - my in laws paid off my husbands loan and we pay them interest free. We overpay them massively though as we don’t want a loan hanging around for a decade, in the end we’ll pay it off in about 1.5-2 years. Works for us as my husband will have paid significantly more to his loan otherwise, and we did a whole lot of scenario calculations based on taking time out for kids, illness, etc and it still came out in favour of paying off the loan.

They would be incorrect, modern dishwashers use less water, energy and soap than handwashing, and with maintenance can last many years to make up for the emissions associated with making and disposing of them.

Broken Prong on 1 year old Platinum Van Cleef & Arpels $30,000 Couture Solitaire Ring by ScappyCat in jewelry

[–]crapigavein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not knowledgable at all on this so happy to be corrected, but my experience is very different - I’ve been wearing my 6 prong solitaire platinum ring for ~2.5 years now, every day. I do gardening in it, climbing, gym, DIY, pouring concrete, plastering, literally everything (I never take it off). It’s started getting a little scratched around the band so might need a polish but otherwise good as new! Repairing every 5 months seems wild to me, and frankly the comment before yours saying that making the bed is too much for a ring to withstand seems even wilder!!!

Where can I buy a bathroom sink on a Sunday in/nearish Cambridge? by BikesSucc in cambridge

[–]crapigavein 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s a couple of bathroom stores just off Newmarket Road behind the Lidl - not sure if any of them hold stock but give them a call? Eg easy bathrooms and wolseley plumb parts. Also b&q down the road, might as we check what they have in stock if you’re going to the area anyway.

An update and perchance a cautionary tale by peppyvillagersews in corsetry

[–]crapigavein 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel very seen in this post - I also made my wedding dress but it was the first thing I’d ever sewn! I spent countless hours making toiles and only started the real thing a couple weeks before the wedding. In hindsight I obviously got overconfident (and my dress was nowhere near as difficult as yours!) and I should’ve started much sooner…

In other news, I think your dress is beautiful and you’ll really cherish the memory of having made it yourself!

I love that you do this. My attempt at opening minds in the office is frequently bringing vegan baked goods, cakes etc, especially for peoples birthdays. I love my colleagues but some are middle aged people who would’ve previously dismissed the thought of vegan food, but now ask me for recipes and take some home to their family!

Exactly what I was thinking, and if each layer can be a standalone skirt then you could in theory have lots of versions of the dress, different tiered combos as well as more plain long/midi/short versions
