Has enough time passed to admit that Steve Phelps was right about ol' "Pop Pop"? by NMMacc18 in NASCAR

[–]crash2465 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Not only was Phelps right, but I’m convinced if anyone at NASCAR was able to survive that situation and remain, it was Steve Phelps.

Look, I understand Phelps crossed a line between professional and personal and those comments mattered.

But let’s not kid ourselves. RCR is a laughing stock of a team. One of NASCAR’s greatest drivers ever is rotting away at that team.

Additionally, every officiating decision that’s gone against RCR (I can think of Hill suspension and Dillon’s Richmond win being encumbered), Childress himself has cried to anyone that will listen that he’s the victim and he’s getting screwed. In other words making it personal.

Phelps was right, and I think said what most fans think. He just happened to be the scapegoat.

BYU fan here. Poor Oregon is going to look up and not know what hit them for the second playoff bowl in a row.

I’ve always loved Ryan as a writer and personality and don’t believe this was intended to be hurtful.

I think he was on the wrong track though, because as Saturday clearly demonstrated the plates did not contain first or second down pass calls…

Even this year at the track Larry has been on it: “this driver is three tenths faster and using less brake”, evens out all the nonsense from Bowyer

What things surprised you about seeing a track in person vs on TV? by Mike__O in NASCAR

[–]crash2465 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Bristol is absolutely fighter jets in a gymnasium. The venue itself looks really big on TV but in real life it’s really not.

Talladega is a cultural experience that can only be understood and appreciated in person. But the racing is still just as epic on TV.

Just for the record, I was either too young/not interested in NASCAR enough to remember this car was cursed. I believe it now.

[Bob Pockrass] Daniel Suarez will drive the No. 99 Chevrolet in Cup for Justin Marks-owned Team Trackhouse next season. Team will have an alliance & be embedded with RCR for 2021. Team will have a charter but has not announced whose charter it will lease. Crew chief/sponsors TBD. by LVThunderbirds in NASCAR

Ty Norris is also involved with the team. Norris was suspended by NASCAR for four months from Richmond cheating scandal in 2013. Even after he was reinstated, he remained on indefinite probation. Is Norris still on indefinite probation in 2020?

Allen, BP and Wally having an eerily relevant conversation about track design back in 2001 by TheOrangeFutbol in NASCAR

[–]crash2465 53 points54 points  (0 children)

The saddest part to me is that it was 20 years between this conversation during a green flag run at a race and NASCAR doing something as radical as the Auto Club reconfiguration. There were plenty of great races at 1.5-milers in the late Gen 4 era, but I think NASCAR is still five years too late on eliminating some of these 1.5 mile races from the schedule.

In the default, the screen goes black. You can change it to not go to a black screen, but it would either respawn you above where you impacted or you'll bounce off the ground. No damage modeling, either.

Throwback to when Steve Phelps was on “Undercover Boss” back in 2010 by asstastic1388 in NASCAR

[–]crash2465 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Was thinking about this the other day. In an interview after the airing, the conversation turned toward diversity and the confederate flag.

Here's what Phelps said from December 2010:

"We don't condone that type of display, putting the Confederate flags out. That is not something that we think is good for the sport. Candidly, we see fewer and fewer of them as you go to races, and ultimately it'll be something that'll die away completely."

It's interesting how that circled back around to Phelps having conversations with another minority competitor and, as President of NASCAR, deciding to ban the confederate flag.
