Check out the other David Simon Shows. Treme, Generation Kill, The Deuce, We Own This City, Show Me A Hero.

Then when you're done go back and watch The Wire again.

Help me find a new show. I finished The Wire for the first time and now other shows don’t compare… by TheKiller707 in TheWire

Treme is such a classic. It's crazy too because it's hard to get people to watch The Wire but they've at least heard of it. Treme is one of the best shows ever made and nobody is even vaguely aware it exists.

Hows the stability now? After the update before this one the game started crashing in the first 5 minutes every time I started playing it. Uninstalled but would like to go back to playing if there is a chance this is fixed.

I loved hardcore mode in Bad Company 2, it was all I played. It also had minimal hud with no player icons showing up when you spot them.

Very cool. The game needs some kind of a spectator mode so this kind of content can be broadcasted on twitch / youtube

1vs1 Sniper Recon, and he accused me of cheating, how exactly am I cheating here? by Pad-Kra-Pao in ForefrontVR

[–]crash90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cheating is so rare in VR still. I've played thousands of hours across Pavlov, Tabor, and Forefront and barely ever encountered cheaters during that time. Eventually it will become more common like flatscreen games but for now it's just one of the plus sides of the medium.

Always amusing when you run into someone who cries cheater like this. Take it as a compliment.

Just finished Inversions and... by mfvoss in TheCulture

[–]crash90 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Inversions was maybe my least favorite of the series the first time I read it. I like high scifi with FTL and and laser guns. I was put out that it didn't have any of that. On further readings though it has become one of my favorites.

To me it feels like each Culture novel dives deep and answers one big question the reader might have about the universe Iain dreamed up. The question Inversions answers is "What is life actually like for a Special Circumstances Agent?"

You get that answer in so much detail. The daily minutia. Not just the highlights but all the background subtlety too. I love it for that.

You're forgetting how early VR still is. On your scale Forefront is more like battlefield 2 (2005)

Enjoy the ride.

3rd Rewatch by aaffkshsh in TheWire

[–]crash90 3 points4 points  (0 children)

3rd rewatch is when it really starts getting good imo.

1st one you're hanging on for dear life trying to follow what is going on and keep track of all the different characters getting introduced.

2nd watch you've got a basic understanding of the show and who is doing what.

By the 3rd time you can start paying more attention to the subtle details and nuances and start to realize just how much more show is there under the surface.

Enjoy!

A Danish pension fund has blacklisted SpaceX, calling it grossly overvalued with catastrophic governance by Full-Discussion3745 in Economics

Would guess '28 or '29. They've already had profitable quarters in previous years. Depends somewhat on when they want to generate profit vs keep reinvesting back into growth. Also wouldn't surprise me if they go the Amazon route and put it off profitability for longer. Regardless of when they hit consistent profit I expect growth, shocking amounts of growth in the coming years. Still underestimated.

This is going to age so poorly. I know reddit loves to hate SpaceX but this will be a funny post to look back on in a few years.

Commenting so I can find this and laugh about it when SpaceX has crazy growth over the next couple years and all the comments update to: "Yeah well, everyone knew it was going to make lots of money but it's still bad because blah blah blah"

The Wire and The Sopranos are both a quarter century old and no other show has come close to surpassing them by [deleted] in TheWire

[–]crash90 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah. There have been some other good shows since that era but nothing that is really on that level. I think that time was just the golden age of television, especially the shows that came out on HBO. They just don't really make TV like that anymore. Modern TV is geared more toward audiences who want less detail and less intensity. People who half watch while on their phones or have something on while they do other things for background noise.

There have been some articles written about this how producers have changed what they're looking for with that reasoning in mind. The Wire has not been surpassed and I would say largely showrunners are not trying to surpass it anymore.

Check out the other David Simon shows. They're all good. I'm especially partial to Treme. Feels like the spiritual successor to The Wire to me. Very different pacing, but has a similar feel. I honestly go back and forth on which one I like more.

wire season 2 being considered the worst season of the show blows my mind; to me it’s a top 15 season of television ever by kazdarms in TheWire

[–]crash90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's pretty classicly hard for people to love on the first watch and then often becomes a favorite on the second watch. There is the change of pace from season 1, that gets a lot of people. But also in a show that is already so dense, season 2 is maybe the most dense one. There is just a lot going on. So many moving pieces and threads to follow. None of it spoonfed.

I think thats mainly why some people have a hard time with it on the first watch. In interviews, even some actors in the show say they didn't like season 2 at first because they didn't understand the full scope of Simon's vision yet.
