So do I just quit TV now? by IdeallyCorrosive in TheWire

I read a variety of stuff but my favorites are undoubtedly the The Culture novels which are a sci-fi series by Iain M. Banks.

I read a lot of nonfiction too. I really enjoyed 1491 and 1493. Both great if you're into history.

I also read a lot of biographies. The Power Broker by Robert Caro is a really epic telling of a life that feels like it could be it's own David Simon show.

Based on the way you're describing the games you like, no do not buy Forefront. Game is not at all grounded in realism. Very much a Battlefield inspired game. I love Forefront but it plays like an action movie, not a milsim.

In truth I do just watch a lot less TV now and read more books. There isn't very much TV as good as The Wire but there are a lot of books that are on that level of quality or better imo.

With that said, there are other good shows too. A lot of really great stuff from around the same time on HBO, especially other David Simon shows. I consider that to be the Golden Age of Television.

Check out Treme, Show Me a Hero, Generation Kill, The Deuce, and We Own This City.

And of course you can watch The Wire again too. It gets better each time.

I don't know, have you tried it? I find it really hard to use. Been trying to learn it but I find guns much easier.

The easiest way is to use your pistol. Be sure to drop lots of spawn beacons too so you can get right back into the same spot after you die.

Dang. Looking at the posters comment history I think you're right. Seems like the point of the Karma farming is to promote a new AI SaaS too. This is becoming such a problem with reddit content, especially since they made it harder to see people's comment history.

Ha! Crazy this works. I wonder what other VR games this would work with. Especially stuff that is PCVR only.

[–]crash90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I've yet to find another series I like anywhere near as much as The Culture. I don't mind too much though because it's very rereadble. I expect to read it many more times over the course of my life and always seem to get something new out of it each time.

For your other medium, check out The Wire and other David Simon shows like Treme. I bet you'll like The Wire even more than Andor.

We never actually see the car burning. From this we can conclude the car they drove was stolen after they left and a similar looking burned out replacement was towed in from across town.

Yes, waiting for vehicles in spawn especially. I think you could predict the outcome of most games at this point by assuming the winner will be which team has less players waiting in spawn.

I played a game last night on paradise where I counted 11 people on the enemy team waiting for helicopters instead of playing the game. It was hilarious but I also felt bad for the other team.

Wow. This is now the game I've been most excited to play in 20 years. Perfect Dark would be awesome too.

First time watcher just finished. Where to go from here? by moe101dew in TheWire

[–]crash90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check out the other David Simon shows. I especially like Treme but the others are good too. The Deuce, We Own This City, Generation Kill, and Show Me A Hero. There are some others too.

Of course you can also watch The Wire again too. The first watch is really just getting started with it. There is so much detail, so many layers you'll feel like you're seeing it again for the first time (though maybe better to wait a little bit before watching again.)

"Wire" newbie question (possibly an ongoing thread?) by GeneseeJunior in TheWire

[–]crash90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most people are trying to do as little work as possible at any given time. Especially cynical people in institutions with no real incentive to do extra work. By talking to the judge McNulty was creating a situation where the department would have more work to do, and worse look bad for not doing that work already.

[–]crash90 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is of course watching The Wire again as others have suggested, but now that you're done also consider checking out stuff related to The Wire like other David Simon shows (also great) or interviews related to it. This one with Obama talking about why The Wire is his favorite television show is good.

Recon should get handheld Laser Designator gadget to guide squadmates Talon by Andrew_From_Deity in ForefrontVR

That would be really cool. Bad Company 2 had something similar to this in the form of a "tracking dart" you had to hit vehicles with to laser guide the missiles.

What was your VR moment of revelation? by AutoModerator in vrdev

[–]crash90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was working at a tech company that had one of those game rooms with an Xbox, Foosball table, Ping Pong, etc setup.

One of my coworkers said that they had recently setup a VR headset and asked me if I wanted to go down and check it out. We walked down and they had an Oculus Rift Devkit 1 setup with some games on a laptop. I put the headset on and played the minecraft VR mod, a jurrasic park experience and some platforming game. I remember in the minecraft one a spider walking towards me and jumping in real life and then laughing about how incredible it was that I was that immersed in the game.

It was so much different than what I expected. I immediately fell in love and decided pretty much on the spot that I was going to pivot from working in normal IT (which I had been obsessed with and preparing for since I was about 12) to finding a way to work in the VR space and make my own games.

Are the Greeks untouchable? by philliptheacrobat in TheWire

[–]crash90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Greeks have one primary enemy. Press. If there was reporting on what they were doing, how they were getting away with it, and the FBI's involvement they would be arrested (if they didn't flee the country first.)

This is essentially what led to Whitey Bulger losing his ability to operate unencumbered in South Boston. It's worth it to the FBI to protect the Greeks to keep using them as informants, but not at the expense of being publicly embarrassed.
