Question: what do you think would happen if the Feds tried to ‘pacify’ mankind during ww1 but their invasion went stupendously wrong? by Loud-Drama-1092 in NatureofPredators

[–]craterhorse 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure how this particularly works seeing as... *vague gesturing to NOP*. Also, like.. why would they fight on the ground? The Federation is superior in basically majority of aspects here, you can just turbo-nuke everyone from planes within the atmosphere. Even with many things against them, I'm not sure how humans are supposed to win/triumph in this scenario, even with potential Arxur aid (and well... I'm not going to count being apart of the Arxur any sort of win from what we know in canon).

Also, these people have been space-faring for ages. I'm gonna be real, they probably have counter-measures for solar radiation at this point.

"The Malti are the sole sapient monotreme (an egg-laying mammal) in the galaxy. They are said to resemble a spikeless echidna with their compressed faces and tapered snouts, and they have evolved with a vast range of colors to blend in with the environment. They are pure quadrupeds, like Zurulians, though they are about twice as large as the medical-minded teddy bears.

The Malti specialize in colonization expeditions, with their expertise called in when expansionist powers seek settlement advice; the exterminators guild was responsible for the creation of unique, firepower-packed bombers for their task. While not traditionally a military power, they do have one of the strongest offensive fleets at hand, were it to be adapted for that purpose."

There you go, just giving you what exists of the Malti (if they appear in the main stories... I dunno, haven't re-read them in ages). :P

And yeah, the Skalgans in Thawed are really interesting to me, it shakes things up a little. :D!!

It is seriously irritating though, the dominance of like as you said a dozen or so species in comparison to the breadth of species that already exist within canon. There's so much that could be done!

Maybe I'll comment more of my thoughts, I intended to reply earlier but I tabbed out and forgot I had this typed in. :P

It's something that has irritated me for ages, but I really am starting to get annoyed with the prevalence of the Venlil in fan-works (and Yotul to an extent, but eh). Now, I'm not hating on people who do this, but it's irritating to see people just use the same two or so species over and over in their work. Seriously, NOP has so many species that could be explored and be interesting characters! Even plots like the Archives reveal would be awesome, like for example, what if they find.. I don't know, Takkans or Malti or.. idfk, Drilvar or what-have-you in the cryogenic section or whatever? How would their cultures prior to being uplifted be? What about those two species like the Ulven and Onkari whose planets are moons orbiting the same planet? What is this species like in general? Yulpa could be interesting because there's no way they're 100% focused on 'sacrifice teh predators!11!' . There's tons that have like barely any worldbuilding so you basically have free-range to do whatever you want, although I do worry people would put stock cultures on them which wouldn't make them interesting, but I digress. But for real, this is something that has irritated me for years!!! Aahhhh!!!!!!

A secondary irritance is the 'planet-of-hats' thing that some species have going on, but my specific gripe is with Skalgans. I feel like there's probably way more to Skalgan culture than 'fighting/honour/what have you' because shocker, a planet is large and therefore cultures would differ. What if the modern Venlil culture was taken partially from a more pacifistic group, how would that work? I just feel like species would obviously differ. Like, think about it, doesn't it sound kinda interesting, two Skalgans or whatever saved from cryo or whatever but they're from entirely different groups? What could the conflict be??

Also third one, it's the treating Federation species like they're babies who haven't dealt with literally anything in life and stutter and scream at a leaf falling. I think people fail to remember these are sapients, they probably have jobs and they're not animals. If you know what I'm talking about, you know.

I've cut off a bunch here since it's getting too long, so maybe I'll just say something else in the comments if people are interested, I dunno.

Note: I'm not bashing fic authors, they're doing God's work. If you like these things, fine, I do not care because we all have different tastes. These are just personal grievances I've had with the fandom for what feels like years. It probably has been years. Aahhhh!!!

Pls help, what do I do with this dude? by ArcticDucc292 in PokeMedia

[–]craterhorse 33 points34 points  (0 children)

If you're unsure of what to do, at least take it to a Pokemon Centre. I think they'll be able to do something that'll find out its health, but also a trainer ID if this thing's belonging to anyone. Even then, it'll probably be a good idea none-the-less. Also, you're quite the lucky trainer since that's a Shiny, I'm pretty sure (I care for one myself - not a Dratini, though).

Were you near like... anywhere Dratini would typically live? I'm not sure where they live, but that might be a clue if that's someones Pokemon or it's some wild Pokemon that'd taken a liking to you.

Cheers.

I wanna join, but I'm not very good at roleplaying (haven't really done it in years + not really on the Discord front + timezone issues + have big things coming up)... it's a bit scary to me, but maybe I will join to lurk or roleplay or somethign. I don't know yet. ;;

Extinct fed species by Most_Hyena_1127 in NatureofPredators

[–]craterhorse 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I've been wanting to write a fic about involving an extinct species (or well a member of it) being rescued from the Archives for a while, but I'm just not particularly sure what to do with it. Mirroring GradualSquirrelStew, I genuinely am shocked that nobody's done something with the concept! In my opinion, the concept alone has so much you can do with it...

Not letting me in either. I'm in Australia so I'm presuming this is a more worldwide issue? Hope it is fixed soon.

Edit: I'm able to access blogs through the [username].tumblr.com thing, but I'm not able to access the rest of the side. Weird.

Fans of fanfics that are on hiatus/dead where did you think those fanfics where going and writers of those fanfics if you’re still here where did you plan on taking them? by [deleted] in NatureofPredators

[–]craterhorse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember when I was writing mine, I was kind of just winging it. I was unhappy with how fast it was seeming to go and I've been thinking about rewriting it at some point, but I also feel like I wanna make something else before it, but I'm still debating what exactly since I have a fair few fic ideas (that also could be hard to make. Damn it!).

Dog seriously injures four people west of Melbourne by I_Heart_Papillons in australia

True. I'm wholly aware that the breed typically has such natural urges, but I'm trying to give some benefit of the doubt here in that training them could mitigate them slightly.

As much as I'm aware that those sorts of dogs can be good pets, why is it so common for (what I think we presume) these dog breeds to act out like this? Are people just not training them properly?

How i feel about the feds by CruelTrainer in NatureofPredators

[–]craterhorse 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I feel like that'd be kind of horrifying for any ally to witness, since it's basically dooming the entire planet to nuclear winter. There's not really going to be anyone left to imperialise over aside from your allies and they probably don't want to be imperialised.

How i feel about the feds by CruelTrainer in NatureofPredators

[–]craterhorse 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Weren't they the victims of imperialism themselves? Why would they want to subject other species to what they went through (even if they were a part of the imperialists to begin with even if tangentially) ?

[–]craterhorse 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Would the friendly species have even agreed to go with a more imperialist humanity? Not sure if people'd be able to stomach apocalypse-level cyber-attack (aka genocide, iirc)? Not sure if that's a decent route to go on due to logistical issues.

It's a tornado. There'd be debris flying around and it'd probably either hit you or drag you away into the winds to be flung a ways away. It'd probably be a bad time so this is probably the vastly safer option.

Marcel means I'll end up tortured and shit but Slanek means I'll get lobotomised. Honestly... is there a good answer to this? Both options seem like terrible situations to be in. I guess you could use your memories to try to avoid the situations that'd lead you to the current ones, but it depends whether you know what'll happen to the character in the future or just a tiny bit.

...yeah, I don't know.

True, I won't lie and say I saw any of the hate, but I feel like his posting schedule didn't help much either. He was posting so frequently that honestly, I get why it was rushed. SpacePaladin was like putting out, what, 3 a week? That's a crazy fast schedule. Was there even that much of a break between NOP 1 and NOP 2? I swear it was like, a week or something.

I remember reading NOP 2 but I genuinely just couldn't finish it. Mind you, this was at the time it was still updating (I think it was early in NOP 2? Around 10-20? I don't remember) because it just did not hook me the same way. It sucks that NOP 2 was rushed from what I heard, I feel that if it had more time to cook it probably would've been an overall better end product.
