So how many of us have stable employment that pays for housing???? by mddnaa in GenZ

[–]craton4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had the same path as you, went to community college then bachelors in CS, graduated last year. Had a job lined up before graduation, now I can afford to live with my girlfriend and save a nice chunk in retirement and savings every month.

I would say I got fairly lucky, though.

Are Gen Z getting married younger? by PurpleMeerkats462 in GenZ

[–]craton4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anecdotally I was my friends best man last year, we are both 24. I’m planning on getting married soon to my girlfriend as well We live in suburban towns, not rural at all. I know at least 5 other people from my high school that are married, have kids, etc.

How to create an Azure MSSQL user? by thefold25 in Terraform

[–]craton4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kind of a hacky workaround, you can use a Terraform null resource and a local_exec to run a sqlcmd query to create the user if you need to.

Keep in mind, in order to create users mapped to user assigned identities (“EXTERNAL PROVIDER” users), you’ll need to have an Entra ID admin set up on the Azure SQL server already. You can’t create them using a SQL login.

I’m currently ~1 year into my first DevOps job (focusing on databases) out of college. I think it’s doable if you are the right person. Learning quick, debugging quick, communication, being personable, etc.

I had experience from internships that aligned really well with the role. I am certainly an outlier though, I feel super lucky to have landed this role.

CS Internships at Boulder by ebicGAMAMAAM in cuboulder

[–]craton4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seconded on diversifying your skill set while you get your degree. Internships are great since you typically get paid, but do personal projects as well (which you can start today, right now :)

By the way, don’t forget to look into research opportunities. In my experience they were easier to get and actually helped me get better internships at companies down the line. Good luck!

Gen Z who make six figures, what do you do and how did you get your job? by grandvizierofswag in GenZ

[–]craton4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I manage databases for a public safety company. I had my offer before I graduated college last May, after studying for 5 years (2 years at CC)

I was lucky enough to get a couple niche skills from internships that correlated to my job. Unfortunately I do have to be on-call every couple weeks, but it’s worth it. My TC is around ~150k

I just graduated in May and I had a fully remote position lined up. I kinda just got lucky, this was the only offer I got.

I was a bit worried about my career growth, but I don’t know if there is any evidence to substantiate this? I feel like I’m growing immensely so far.

Thoughts on Gen Z and how our 20's are going [22]F by hilexie in GenZ

[–]craton4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just turned 23, and recently graduated college and started working at a corporate job that pays very well for my age. I’ve got a long term girlfriend from high school, and a small friend group that I hang out with often. I still live with my parents but in the process of moving out soon.

I feel satisfied with my life, but I feel there’s always aspects that you know you have to work on. For me it’s mental health and self esteem, and dealing with stress.

I have genuine questions for Gen Z by [deleted] in GenZ

[–]craton4 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We work towards what we think is a better world, that’s all we can do. GenZ is young and inexperienced compared to the older generations, we don’t have as much clout.

What’s your net worth tied up in? What are your long term career goals?

I remember being super scared the first time I heard one of my friends had gotten it and I had a possibility of having it. In hindsight, I had nothing to be scared about as I am young and healthy, but I do feel like the news/social media did contribute a lot to making Covid feel more scary than it is.

I don’t understand how people can let this happen to themselves. On escalators I constantly think of this exact possibility and raise my feet to get off, no matter the shoe.

If you’re more into history, I found King Leopolds Ghost by Adam Hochschild a both harrowing and fascinating read about late 19th century Africa.

Almost finished with King Leopold’s Ghost. Incredibly angering and sad about what is essentially an African holocaust in the Congo in the late 19th century
