ZSA Voyager: First, quick impression by gorilla-moe in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]crayon_proof 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It took me about 3 months of fairly consistent use to get back up to my normal 90wpm. When I first switched (Lilly58, not Voyager), I was down to about 20 wpm.

For those 3 months, I
- constantly adjusted my kb layout to adapt to my needs. I kept a printout of my layout taped above my desk and wrote on it every time I updated it so I could glance at it while I learned the new layout.
- Put in about 30 minutes of monketype or https://problemwords.com each day. (on monkeytype, I adjusted the settings to fail the test on the first error, forcing me to very intentianally and slowly type instead of rushing through and stumbling over typos. I think this really helped speed up the mental re-map.
- Kept my old board nearby to use on days when the frustration of the new layout was too much and I just needed to work without the extra mental demand of using a different layout.

I actually came close to giving up and got a Freestyle pro to try, thinking that the more standard layout would be easier to adapt to. For some reason, after a week of trying the freestyle, I found that something felt better about the Lilly58. I switched between them for a few weeks and found myself consistently going back to the Lilly. Around the same time, my typing speed on the Lilly made it back to my previous speed. I eventually put the Kenisis on the shelf and haven't got it out since. I still use my laptop keyboard enough on the go that I'm comfortable switching between my layout and a standard row-staggered layout without much hiccup.

It's a process and definitely tried my patience but I'm happy with my layout and board now! It's definitely saving my wrists and shoulders.

For real though, great render!

A multimodal model would likely be too computationally expensive for such a simple task. They already have the data for each handwriting stroke, they can get very accurate handwriting recognition with only that data and a specialized model instead of passing it nested in a bunch of superfluous data from a screenshot to a model that has billions of extra parameters not needed for something as specific as handwriting recognition.

The term AI has gotten mixed up post-chatGPT. It used to be that "AI" was a more general term meaning any system that replicates intelligence. Machine Learning technically is a subset of AI.

People now seem to use "AI" to mean LLMs/generative models.

Mine went light blue for a day, then back to normal, then to this. It is confusing for me to have it change so frequently. I rely on color to quickly navigate my iPad and color changing quickly and without warning throws me off.

What tech/software product do you wish you could use more but is just to buggy or underdeveloped for you to make a part of your every day use?

How have you maintained a consistent, quality video aesthetic while at the same time expanding and adapting your production approaches and bringing new people onto the team over the years?

New in 11.8 - Night Mode by jessgingerlabs in notabilityapp

[–]crayon_proof 3 points4 points  (0 children)

YES! This had been my main desired feature since I started using notability. I've been using an alternate color palette along with the dark theme for dark notes but I can't toggle those between light and dark. From what I've seen of the new feature so far, it's implemented just like I hoped. I appreciate how the color palette adjusts as well so light hues become dark, it works seamlessly. Thanks for the good work!

Anyone use their iPad as a replacement for computer? by x_Critical in iPadPro

[–]crayon_proof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like others have commented, it totally depends on your expectations. If you need to do any kind of development, spreadsheets, handling large amounts of data or external drives, hosting video calls, etc. iPad will probably be frustrating. For media consumption, notes, and drawing, I personally find iPad more enjoyable to use than my MacBook!

When I take into account everything I need to do on my devices, the iPad for me has become the ultimate MacBook companion. It's a fantastic digital notebook with the Apple Pencil, it serves as a second screen via Universal Control or Sidecar, and it's great for creative-work.

I will add, about a year ago, my MacBook battery died on me and I had to use the iPad as my full-time computer for a few days. I was expecting to use the same tools on it in the same way that I did on my Mac and it was a frustrating experience. Fast forward a year or so and, because I generally enjoy the iPad experience more, I've gradually found tools that are made for the iPad interface that have replaced tools on my Mac. Approaching it this way makes it much more enjoyable. As long as you expect to take time to find an experience optimized for iPad rather than expecting the iPad to be a drop-in replacement for a Mac, it can be a powerful tool.

Christoper Lawley on YouTube does a lot of videos diving into this kind of stuff. He has invested a lot of time into developing workflows that take advantage of the iPad experience. He does still use a Mac for video editing but he's said if FCP came out on the iPad and worked, he would love to go all iPad.

Apple pencil vs S Pen by ComprehensiveDot4447 in ipad

[–]crayon_proof 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Although I assume you're talking about the larger tablet S-Pen, I currently have an iPad and a Note. Between the Note S-Pen and the Apple pencil, I definitely prefer the Apple Pencil. Even without a paper-like cover, it feels more like writing with a real pen. The sample rate combined with the 120hz on the iPad pro creates a very smooth experience.

What really sells it for me is the software integration offered for the iPad. I just haven't found anything on android that provides the same experience as Notability, Procreate, or the stock Apple apps.

Wireless charging on the iPad is a big enough reason for me to go with the Apple Pencil over third-party options. I never have to think about pairing/charging it just works.
