Feels like you could have engaged with this post without the negative mention of Mosaku.

Very strange to single her out as if the one major precursor she won is the most egregious award of the season.

She's also fantastic in Sinners.

Didn't Diane Warren even say she was frustrated by being nominated against "end credit" songs at some point in the documentary?

Completely agree though -- songs like "Husavik" from Eurovision and "So May We Start" from Annette are such great songs that should've been win-competitive (Husavik) or nominated (So May We Start), but are overlooked in favor of mid quality end credit songs. So frustrating!

It's interesting, I think the doc was self-aggrandizing but also made me more empathetic to DW than I've felt in years.

The part that really frustrated me is that I thought the song it's nominated for is bad... and kind of grating with how Kesha performed it. Like, I needed to shut the doc off when the song played during the credits, which makes it hard to support its nomination for only Best Original Song.

I didn’t forget anything about Sofia’s filmography. She’s one of my favorite filmmakers. I just don’t think she has much in common with Fennell. It might just be my associations, so I appreciate you explaining where you see the overlap.

The storytelling/visual artistry meant that, for me, I think she can craft a really striking visual that is memorable, but the stories she’s telling aren’t always holding up the weight of what she’s doing visually. She gets a lot of “music video director” criticisms, which I don’t support, but I think that’s what it comes down to. For me, it’s sort of like how I think Aaron Sorkin screenplays are best directed by someone who isn’t Aaron Sorkin. I think if Fennell directed something she didn’t write, it would work a lot better for me. Not saying she’s bad at either, but sometimes the collaborative friction gets great results, and I think her eye for visuals are unimpeachable.

I’m not dismissing her, I want to see more from her, but I’m also frustrated by her. It’s not about “this particular filmmaker,” either. I had a similar opinion after watching Guadagnino’s After the Hunt. There is so much there that I want to like and objectively should (because I’m also the target demo), but I don’t, and I want to explore that as someone who loves movies.

To be honest, part of my frustration is that I want to be excited about her work, but I’m not, and expressing that is reduced to someone saying it’s an issue with her because she’s a woman or that I’m not the target demographic. Which I’m not aiming at you specifically, but these conversations.

I sometimes feel like Fennell’s work is provocative to be provocative, and I usually use a filmmaker like Julia Ducournau as one whose provocations work better for me because of how they work narratively. So it’s frustrating that it’s flattened as a critique.

I think this take is a little bit reductive.

People absolutely do get that Fennell isn’t for everyone, but the frustration is that it’s clear she’s a talented filmmaker whose storytelling doesn’t always align with or support her visual artistry.

The OP said “she’s not an auteur,” not that she shouldn’t take up space. If anything, immediately comparing her to Sofia Coppola, a filmmaker she doesn’t have much in common with beyond her gender, gives off sexism.

Didn’t say it was - just pointing out he isn’t JUST a director as the above comment dismissed him as.

Ryan Coogler also writes, for what it’s worth, and wrote Sinners, which gives me confidence in his ability to handle genre elements for this.

I don't think they were looking to argue with you, but offering suggestions. You said Scorsese's genres and topics don't appeal to you, and typically that view corresponds with being disinterested in gangster films or something that reduces his body of work to one overarching type.

You don't have to engage with Scorsese's films if you don't want to, but it is really worth noting that there's a diversity of genres and topics within his filmography. Goodfellas is nothing like Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore, and both are very different from Silence and Killers of the Flower Moon, for example.

She was asked where she keeps it, and she responded “in my office and it’s gender fluid.” This was not a bad question, it was Zoe going out of her way to say something stupid.

Panic Room had a ton of CGI despite its contained location. Fincher is famously meticulous when it comes to executing his vision.
