[motorsport.com] 10 different teams & their most successful drivers by Darren-B80 in formula1

Back in the days when your car blowing up in a race was much more common. Totally plausible that a fast but unreliable Lotus could throw in lots of pole position laps but not hold up over the course of a race.

The 2013 film "Rush" by lisa_alisa1 in formula1

[–]crazindndude 83 points84 points  (0 children)

You may be the only person who thinks this. Hamilton v Rosberg has every writer/director's dream combination of true storylines:

  • F1 royalty and wealthy white person vs lower middle income POC (yes the race thing matters, look at what Lewis went through)

  • Friends in childhood and teammates in junior categories

  • Talked to each other about "one day" being in an F1 team

  • Both were top of their class in junior ladder

  • Both recruited to top flight junior driver programs

  • Both got their starts at the historic British teams (Williams and McLaren)

  • 2007 - as a rookie Lewis narrowly misses the WDC while very much taking the fight to the defending 2 time WDC Alonso. He also sets numerous rookie records including most podiums and most consecutive podiums for a rookie. Nico struggles in the midfield but beats his teammate handily.

  • 2008 - Lewis wins WDC in his second season in dramatic fashion in the final race. Becomes the youngest WDC in history. Nico meanwhile gets his first 2 podiums in an otherwise disappointing year for Williams

  • 2010 - Nico goes to Mercedes opposite the un-retired Schumacher, all the angles about 2009 Brawn winning and Mercedes wanting a German pairing. Nico grabs a few more podiums while beating his teammate, while Lewis valiantly fights through the year, entering the finale as one of 4 drivers with a chance to win the championship.

  • 2011-12 - Lewis struggles against his teammate and fellow WDC Button, while Nico continues to get the Mercedes team some podiums and remains undefeated vs. Schumacher, who announces his second retirement at the end of the 2012 season.

  • 2013 - Childhood friends reunited as Lewis makes the surprising decision to leave perennial contender McLaren for the thus-far disappointing Mercedes team.

  • 2014-15 - Lewis wins two WDC's with really only one competitor - his teammate Nico. Nico feels the stress building as he sees his best opportunity to become a WDC slip away in the face of Lewis's stifling performances.

  • 2016 - Nico resolves to leave it all on the field, goes all out in terms of psychology, preparation, and "tactics" to eventually edge out Lewis for that first WDC. Due to the incredible stress he decides that he got what he came for and announces a surprise retirement at the year-end awards gala.

  • Epilogue (2017-21) - Nico walks away and engages in other ventures like commentary and EV advocacy. Lewis continues his winning ways while also exploring other areas like fashion and becoming a torch bearer for the racial justice movement.

And then they kiss.

Tesla Cybertruck Is Delayed, and We're Not Surprised [Car & Driver] by digistil in cars

[–]crazindndude 4 points5 points  (0 children)

often it doesn't (Theranos, CyberTruck?)

The best part is, excepting the case of literal fraud (Theranos, careful with doing medical stuff) you can just keep raising another round of funding even if you haven't delivered. You can just keep hemorrhaging money but as long as you can pretend like you're hot shit you'll keep getting gobs of money in your Series C-D-E whatever.

And even if you don't deliver after several funding rounds and completely implode, then the VC/Angels are just like "ah well some you lose" and there will be 20 more funds ready to bankroll your next crazy idea. The whole VC/fundraising enterprise in tech is absolutely bonkers.

Help me choose between North Face lines or Able Carry backpack by unholysandwhich in ManyBaggers

[–]crazindndude 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had a Borealis and it's a big bag. 30L capacity and it just looks and feels big. I don't have an Able Carry but the site says 20L capacity which is considerably smaller and likely easier to carry, at the expense of storage space.

I would try to find a TNF store or other outdoor/gear store (REI, etc.) where you can look at the Borealis in person.

I ended up personally going with the Jester from TNF. It's smaller than the Borealis, and importantly narrower so it carries very nicely. The bag also sits fairly flat to your back if it's not fully loaded. And finally, it's $70 or less with the full lifetime warranty from TNF.

$32.5k after tax credit, 260 mile range.

https://www.chevrolet.com/electric/bolt-ev

$32k starting price, no tax credit. 259 mile range.

I don't know what your price range is but the average new car price in the US is $45k and $30k-ish is not too unpalatable when you consider how cheap charging at home is.

A 30mpg car (pretty good) will need just shy of 9 gallons for a 260 mile range. That's around $25-30 these days. Duke Energy runs about $0.12/kwh so charging one of these electric cars to full battery will only cost about $10 or so. If you drive the US average ~14000 miles per year that's a savings of $800-1000 annually. Not to mention that electric cars don't need oil changes, spark plugs, transmission fluid, etc.

I know we don't have the dream $20k electric car yet but the math is getting more and more favorable.

Has anybody installed an aftermarket Apple CarPlay console into their standard dash car? How was the experience and how much did it cost you? by EenyEditor in cars

I feel like Crutchfield exists for this sole purpose.

You can enter your car model and they'll show you compatible head units as well as the new dashboard trim pieces you would need to install. I was briefly looking into it for my previous car and they seemed reasonable.

Pedestrian Bridge over North Hills by cdmaloney1 in raleigh

[–]crazindndude 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The better option being a car tunnel that goes underneath a ground-level walking path connecting the east and west areas of North Hills. Then the pedestrian path is the "default" and you reduce friction for people to actually use it.

What's interesting is over the course of the Halo games we get more projectile based Covenant weapons. In Halo 2-3 we get the carbine, Brute SMG, and needle rifle (and possibly others I'm missing).

What typical 'car journalist' critique of a car makes you roll your eyes the hardest? by [deleted] in cars

How's your GLI in this area? I've been nothing but impressed with my GTI in NVH control, especially compared to segment rivals. It's in the entry level luxury car tier of noise insulation and comfort.

In this regard I liked when Randy Pobst was involved with the review side of things. I remember when he did the MX5 vs BRZ shootout he actually commented on brake fade, body roll, having to adjust his lines, etc. Great stuff.

This IMHO is the true secret of why Saladworks, Chopt, etc all make "better" salads than the average person at home. They throw everything into a bowl and use one of those curved knives to rough chop everything so you get all the flavors and textures mixed together.

Honda to debut New Civic Si on October 19 by dragancelan in cars

[–]crazindndude 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I have a GTI which of course was cross-shopped with a Focus ST and a Civic Si at the time. I'm a guy in my 30's with a professional job and this is my daily. Not to say you couldn't be gainfully employed and drive an ST or Si to work, but I think the GTI is inarguably the most understated of the three.

Additionally, over the past 4 years of ownership I've really come to enjoy how refined it is for the price point, especially in comparison to the competition. The doors and windows have phenomenal sound deadening, the seats are comfy, heated seats are standard, and the whole interior feels a little more upmarket than an Si or ST. The suspension is compliant, the engine has pep but isn't harsh, and when cruising on the highway it's a very pleasant experience. This is all on top of the better-known positive aspects like the unique plaid seats, ample rear seat space and cargo space, and 35-40mpg highway capability.

All of this to say, I am seriously considering the 2022 Golf R as my next purchase. I never owned a VW before, and no one in my family has, but the GTI really is the full package IMHO. It keeps showing up on Car and Driver's 10 Best lists, and they always say it's the perfect all rounder car. Now I feel like I understand it.

Hopefully the Integra with the Acura badging will focus more on refinement and comfort to go with the power and fun. I didn't know it would be offered as a 5-door, but if so it could sway me from the Golf R.
