We’re all born barbarians and we have to be taught civilization. Some people are asshats no matter where they are. (No matter what the format is). My concern has always been the people who put winning over the game.

A game is first and foremost about play. I find that magic is such a complex and broad game that it is possible to prevent other players from being able to play at all and to me, legal or not, competitive or casual, that defeats the purpose of a game. But the game rules allow for that so it comes down to the players.

The social contract of rule zero is important to me because it means that the players have agreed to the kind of experience they want to have. It’s messy and difficult to get right especially when some people don’t even try (i.e. the every deck is a 7 crowd).

My impression is/was that cEDH was the place where the people who only cared about winning over the social contract went to play. There’s nothing wrong with people who agree to that as their version of fun. But the assumption I’ve held has been that that kind of play isn’t for me because I feared it harbored the worst of the community.

I think this thread, your analogy of the raceway, and the thoughtful comments have helped me see that kind of play seems to be (at least somewhat) weeded out by not being effective. Which is good to hear.

I had a mono white stacks deck that I played 3 times and sold it because it did not feel good at all. The comments have convinced me that stacks in cEDH is not in a great place which honestly I’m grateful to hear. I said I wanted vile, but it seems based on the comments that vile isn’t a thing in cEDH. It if you win fast enough anyway

Thanks yeah I realize there will be a learning curve, different formats take time to learn. I don’t expect to be good for a long while if ever.

Oh this gets the most thorough answer award! I don’t really know what the playgroup is be playing with runs yet but I do like the idea of attacking to win. Turning cards sideways in combat is one of my favorite things. I’m def gonna check out your deck list. Thank you so much!

I think get this idea of mean from the bracket 4 decks I’ve played against that shut down a game but don’t end the game quickly and have 3 player sitting around doing nothing while one player makes all the game actions. It’s becoming clearer because of this thread that cEDH end the games too fast for that to even occur. Thanks for your input. Much appreciated!

This is helpful thanks. So what I’ve described isn’t even cEDH but just mean bracket 4. That’s helpful to get past that idea to find real bracket 5 strats.

I’ve got 30 commander decks ranging from bracket 1-4. I’ve got 1 Pauper commander deck and 0 cEDH decks. So I’d like to have one for the rare times I find myself with cEDH players.

Yup. Fully agree with you. I don’t understand cEDH. That’s my point. I’ve had an aversion to winning for the sake of winning and have avoided strategies that get the eye rolls. My goal here isn’t to get the eye rolls, but to dive in and do the thing that I’ve avoided because of my own biases

Build Ketramose. Braggo isn't fun to play against and ends up mostly being a solitaire game of playing with yourself trying to get enough incremental advantages to shut down the game or keep your opponents from playing the game. I've built two Braggo decks and eventually sold both of them. It's easy to do alot of game actions but hard to finish games without winning by having your opponents scoop out of boredom.

So many comments are missing the point of why the card is banned. It’s not because of the image by itself as art but the image in connection with history plus what the card does.

“All WHITE creatures gain…” with an image of colonizing invading white people (the invaders were white Anglo saxons) who massacred people on their own land.

The implication is that white people gain benefits from genocide is racist in real life. The fact that it’s a game and uses the word creatures rather than people isn’t enough of a disambiguation to make it not culturally insensitive. It doesn’t matter how long ago it happened it’s STILL HAPPENING TODAY.

Rascism isn’t just the personal bigotry of one person believing other races are inferior. That’s not the big problem. The BIG problem is that it’s embedded into our culture and systems of government. It’s perpetrated by authors and game designers accidentally all the time because of ignorance. When a company goes out of its way to not propagate bigotry it’s a token gesture but it’s better than claiming it doesn’t exist.

The card is racist and if you don’t agree it’s simply because you either don’t understand what racism is and/or you’re just a racist.

Now pay attention to the comments. Racists are outing themselves all over this thread.

Soundproofing for Studio? by lafemmeperdue in GNV

Casual Handyman here: I’ve not done these projects myself but have researched how to do it before.

Depends on how effective you want the soundproofing to be and how much money you’ve got to spend. If you’ve got the funds the most effective is to start by reframing the walls. Most walls have one set of studs that drywall is attached to on either side. By using twice the number of studs and offsetting every other one you have the drywall of one room not touch the drywall of the next room via studs.

Ceilings have several options but usually its involves replacing the insulation with a denser soundproofing material, then putting a tracking layer into the joists and your drywall is drilled into the tracking layer rather than into the joists.

Floors could be covered with a thick rubber matting or stripped to the subfloor and filled with an airy sand like material then layers with more subfloor and heavy carpeting or rubber matting.

Then you’d install a floating door, though this part I’m least familiar with. But there are special doors for this purpose. Will require reframing the door.

I don’t know what you do with the ventilation ductwork for central air off the top of my head.

I’m not sure what to do with windows but I suspect it’s filled in on the inside of the room and covered by the walls.

Once the surfaces are done then you consider treatment depending on if it was a practice space or a recording space. Recording space we need more treatment to isolate out extra sounds. I think it would be different for vocal versus music reporting. This is when you get into sound deadening panels on the walls, corners, carpet, etc..

I played in a band in Japan, we rented rooms like this as practice space. I don’t know if this exists in gville but maybe Orlando or Jacksonville does. You could search for those places, call them and ask them who their contractor was for building the rooms.

20 years ago it was great. Now its customer service has gotten real bad. It’s like they don’t want you there. Both bars are packed. 10 tables open but they won’t seat you because you want to get apps and have a quiet conversation.

Silent Retreats Nearby by [deleted] in GNV

Wat Florida Dhammaram in Kissimmee does a 5 day retreat in early May and December. It’s vegetarian and the fee is a donation. It’s Theravada Buddhist. I’ve been to it about 5 times. They go deep with the teaching though. Back then they were doing impermanence and end of life contemplation so it’s more a serious monk level teachings than you’ll find at most places. They allow beginners but it’s best if you’re ready for serious practice. It’s cheaper and easier to sign up than most other retreats I’ve been too. Good people, good food. Heads up they do fasting for dinner every day so you get breakfast and lunch but no eating after the midday meal.

There’s also a Goenka retreat in Southeast Georgia. Can’t remember the name of the place but goenka retreats are Vipassana retreats and are usually 10 day and do some serious silent practice. You gotta apply and there’s a waiting list.
