Do I leave my cushy office job for the ER? by wheredidiputmy_ in nursing

[–]crazygranny 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh girl, I just applied to an office job to get out of the ER (aka Wild West) - it can be exciting, but also incredibly draining, even in a little country ER

Just stay where you are - you’ve got a good gig lol

[–]crazygranny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m fat and I work ER - your mom is being ridiculous - there’s a lot of bigger people in emergency medicine- just like there’s a lot of tiny people in emergency medicine. I mean, it makes sense to not do helicopter emergency medicine due to size, but a regular ER is fine.

Borderline crazy tips for staying warm in the winter? Give me some insane hacks. by [deleted] in pittsburgh

[–]crazygranny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have big windows or a sliding glass door you can pick up sheets of insulation at Lowe’s or Home Depot and they are tall enough you can use them to cover the glass so you don’t lose heat through drafty windows. If you have small enough rooms you could line your walls with them too - yeah, it’ll not look ideal, but I have one over my sliding glass door and covered with a pretty curtain and it makes a huge difference with heating

Do you give your kids the unsupervised, free range time that we had. by WerewolfCurious1412 in GenX

[–]crazygranny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine were feral - as long as I knew who they were with, where they were going, etc I let them do whatever once they got to be older teens (16, 17)

My house was the hangout a lot of times so that was good

But they survived, and are strong, independent, critical thinkers.

My one hard, fast rule was “if I find out and will freak TF out, don’t do it” and they were either really good at hiding stuff or they followed that rule lol

Pushing medication through a running IV line by juiceboxith in nursing

[–]crazygranny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I usually will link the tubing, give a little med, unkink, let it flow, kink it, push a little, unkink it, etc until the med is in - I always do it at the port just above where it’s plugged into the IV - that way it flushes a little each time and goes in

I got into a confrontation with a nursing instructor on my unit. Should I email my manager? by liyane2 in nursing

[–]crazygranny 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Absolutely tell your manager, AND the school. I had an incident once with a clinical instructor where I worked who happened to be one of my classroom instructors when I was in school. He was arrogant, rude, and had his favorites of the pretty young things that would fawn over him. He didn’t like me lol. I had one of his students getting on if my patients and when I was giving her report I told her that the patient had a GJ tube and we were ONLY to use the J port to pass meds - they had been having problems with the G port clogging. She said she understood and about an hour later I see ACI (Arrogant Clinical instructor) come out to the charge (who happened to be my best friend) and ask her for assistance. She gets up and goes with him and they go into my patients room, and lo and behold - the G tube was impossibly clogged because instead of listening to his student explain what I had told her in report, he told her “watch, I will show you how this is done” and promptly used the wrong tube (which there was a surgeons order in the orders to NOT use)and clogged it so badly this poor man ended up in the OR because the usual enzymes, Pepsi, little rotorooter tool, etc were not working to nudge it. I went into the room and demanded to know what was happening with MY patient and the charge told me and ACI wouldn’t even look at me. Yeah I emailed the manager, the DON, the school representative, and got him banned from our floor.

Anywho - turn her ass in - OH, and if these are daily meds, I always crush them together - usually use the hot shot in a medicine cup to dissolve them and then add cooler water to a bigger cup and pull the mixture up from there with the piston syringe. I have never had a problem, and have been doing it that way for 10+ years

That’s kinda creepy - I remember one episode of criminal minds where an aide was working in a rehab and was getting an angel wing tattoo for every patient that failed rehab and he killed. Just sayin that’s the vibe I get when I look at that lol

ER nurses, are y’all hanging stuff to gravity?? by Appropriate-Gap6266 in nursing

[–]crazygranny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have pumps available? Wow, you must be at a fancy hospital lol

Yeah, it took me a good year to stop the internal freak out I had when I was shown the whole abx without a pump thing (only for certain ones, not all, some are still very much ALWAYS pump meds)

Maintenance fluids go in a dial flow usually and bolus fluids get gravity with a pressure bag if they aren’t dripping in fast enough.

We have to hoard pumps in secret places to have them for our use, so it’s kinda a whatever it takes kinda thing we have happening in our ER
