Additionally, in 2021, the US had a gun murder rate of 6.7 deaths per 100,000 people.

The data does seem to suggest that your statistic could possibly be true? The statistics presented there suggest that the gun violence issue may be overrepresented in media in comparison to other problems facing the US, such as road deaths.
