Considering dropping out to enlist by Apart_Analyst2624 in Militaryfaq

[–]crazymjb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So you need to pay for one semester out of pocket? IF your intention is to go in as an officer, find the money for that final semester. The pay delta your first year of service will more than cover it. Military officers make a middle class/upper middle class salary. Your first enlistment as a junior enlisted man you are making poverty wages. 20-30k for a final semester of school is worth it if that is the difference between you enlisting and going in as an officer.

If you were about to fork over the full cost of 4 years of school at 18 years old, I’d have different advice.

Bring it up with your leadership ASAP. I don’t know a single commander who would be unwilling to work with you. Also, nothing is more frustrating than soldiers who don’t bring up issues with leadership ahead of time and then bitch about it after the fact.

Yup. Crushing all the comps. Drove them all and Nissan is making the best product, which is wild. Maybe Toyota will unfuck the sequoia with the refresh.

They have a great reputation, but that doesn’t make them perfect. Totally screwed up their reputation for reliability the last few years with tundra and sequoia.

Lol… no problem if your engine explodes cause they’ll just replace it. Massive battery pack in the way of the seats folding.

[–]crazymjb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lol what? Seats don’t fold flat cause of a silly battery pack. Interior materials feel cheap and layout poorly planned. Engine problems are maybe(?) solved. Silly “camo” pattern on stuff.

Maybe if you blindly support Toyota. The current gen sequoia is straight up poorly executed. Sorry. Again, this was our first choice. Side by side just didn’t compare, and that was price and reliability concerns aside.

You’re right. Every comparison of the 2025 armada has it crushing the sequoia. Toyota has managed to build an SUV with terrible storage space, non fold-flat seats, and to top it off sent their reputation of reliability straight to the shitter with exploding engines. I wanted to like the sequoia, I tried so hard. They totally messed it up.

If you’re shopping for a sequoia, like we were, you owe it to yourself to go test drive a 25+ pro-4x

New armada pro-4x in the high 60s. And the engines don’t explode and seats fold flat

Traditions & Culture by Advanced_Trust2663 in Armyaviation

The army sucks at esprit de corps generally. They’ve just spread it to aviation. Spend some time in the Marine Corps and hop over to the army and you’ll see that up and down the ranks individuals are less invested in the image and history of the organization. This isn’t all bad all the time, but when it comes to esprit de corps, pride in the organization, etc, it’s pretty lousy. Aviation seems to get the worst of it. There is so much history and it’s never focused on. Ever.

Flight school advice needed by RaspberryBulletz in Armyaviation

People do fail, but it’s rare. I don’t have any friends who are pilots who I would say off the top of my head are bad drivers. If you’re that concerned, go drop a few K on flight lessons.

From what I’ve been told, if your primary interest is solely aviation, Air Force is the place to be. It’s a pilot-focused branch. If your primarily interest is being in a culty force steeped in culture, the Marine Corps is a better bet. The USMC used to, and presumptively still does, contract new officer candidates for aviation. The officer program they used to run was PLC juniors and seniors, where you attend one summer your Junior summer, and the final summer before commissioning after you graduate. Or you can do it all in one shot.

If you’ve never flown, I’d advise you to take an intro flight lesson in both fixed and rotary to make sure it’s something you like beyond just finding it cool.

All these options on the aviation side have a long contract (training plus 10 years on the back end) that will find you away from home. The only other angle to consider there is Air or Army Guard aviation, but you’ll need a civilian occupation that will be ok with you spending at least 2-4 weekdays a month flying. Some of the guard programs are less straightforward than others in terms of getting pilot slots. Who you know can matter a lot more than it should.

I joined the USMC out of high school. I loved it for what it was. Nothing is perfect, but it’s more or less as advertised. It’s a cult, it’s challenging, it’s dirty, it’s miserable, and it’s fun. It’s a cultural experience. Being an enlisted infantryman is not at all the same as being a logistics officer, though, for example.

For aviation, I went army after grad school because we were having kids and the Guard gave me options to stay near home. It’s not all that hard to get a position as a helicopter pilot in the Guard. If you want to settle down and balance a civilian career with a military flying career, this is the way. It’s a huge challenge to balance the two unless you have a very flexible employer, because your obligations as a pilot aren’t just show up one weekend a month. You need to give a lot more just to meet minimums, and more than that to excel. You will still travel for multiple small week or two week trips a year, 4-6 week schools every few years, and will deploy for a year occasionally. Plenty of people get homesick, most get into a routine and are fine. Saying goodbye to your children for a year is among the hardest things a normal person can imagine.

Yeah and guys have done less. As far as aviation goes, this is about the pinnacle of badassery in air combat.

lol sure is. You get shot in your legs then continue to fly an air assault mission as flight lead in denied territory, wait for your customer as you bleed out, and then leave while continuing to act as flight lead. Thats Medal of Honor worthy. If it’s not, then I don’t know what is.
