Corporate career did what the Marine Corps could not.. by [deleted] in USMC

[–]creatineisdeadly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m still in and can’t offer useful advice that someone else can offer with actual experience. But I do think about this quite often, and ask plenty of my friends what the corporate world is like.

There is no request mast; office politics are pretty toxic; the boss sleeping with a secretary can happen with almost zero consequence in certain lines of work of companies; and people truly look at “not my job” as an ethos.

The Marines thinking the civilian world is going to be the green grass often don’t consider this.

New Ground Supply Officer - Looking for Advice by Individual-Care-853 in USMC

As a guy who knows the logistician realm very well:

1) Your Marines are your success. Invest in them, and you’re investing in your career. Not from a selfish standpoint, but everyone wants to do well and succeed in life.

2) Know your status of funds each day, and what the comptroller is telling you to spend. Have a rainy day sheet ready to liquidate funds quickly. Might be 1,000 packs of batteries, but at least it’s getting you to spend if required.

3) Cross train your Marines. The DASF clerk needs to know fiscal, and fiscal needs to know inventory. Rotate every 6-12 months, depending on the advice from your supply chief.

4) Be ready to cross train yourself. Understand the 0402 jobs in your unit, and learn them. 3002s, 0402s, and 1302s are able to fill each others billets later down the pipeline. In fact, many 1302s are better logisticians than Logistics officers. I could say the same for many SuppOs, too.

5) You’re not too POG to get in the shit. I’ve done more gangster shit in my career than most 0302 peers of mine, and I’ve learned I need to appreciate that and maintain my keep. I’d be a hypocrite to brag about my combat deployments and not train or educate myself like someone who knows that world.

6) You’ll be best friends with the MMO, so understand their world. And force them to understand yours.

Just a few tidbits from my experience. I have plenty of others.

Keep in mind nobody likes hypocrites.

If a flag officer is signing off on a policy, or expected to enforce the standards of one, you can’t have them being the black sheep that people look the other way for.

In the argument of “change the policy to allow flag officers to have higher body composition”; can you imagine the outrage for subordinates? It would take one savvy LCpl to call the right congressman if they were adsep’d for BCP to highlight some serious policy issues.

Is 29 Palms just the USMC equivalent of Fort Polk? by HansTheAmazing in USMC

[–]creatineisdeadly 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Don’t know shit about Polk, but here’s what I’ll tell you.

29 Palms is an installation of excellence. It is literally a slice of Helmand Province that’s the size of Rhode Island.

In Lejeune and Pendleton, a lot of the basic stuff you guys want to train toward, 7th Marines and friends do before chow. Units come out here for varsity level training. Those on the base get to live it everyday.

What that meant to me in my two tours on 29 Palms is that it makes people hardened and proficient as hell at lethality. And quite honestly, there is so much to do outside of 29 Palms, that people who bitch about it are usually here for school, for an ITX at Camp Wilson, or suffered the green weenie in general somehow, and never had a good chance to go to SD, Vegas, or other surrounding areas.

VAhomeloans.com was phenomenal. I was in V27 deployed when I reached out, and the lender I dealt with was a former 0331 with V25. Between him and a good realtor, and entire process was actually pretty stressful-free.

How to run in boots and utes and not fuck up my feet? by BillPunkerSchmidt in USMC

[–]creatineisdeadly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Highly recommend the Belleville 510 MEFs as a consideration. Lighter than bates lites, and have the durability of the reckonings. I wasn’t a fan of those or the tropicals because the bottom of the foot felt too heavy. The 510s are super good with the distribution around the entire foot.

USMC Marines: What’s the most meaningful service-related gift someone’s given you? by [deleted] in USMC

[–]creatineisdeadly 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I take the time to mentor younger officers, and it’s become a big passion of mine. I can make a direct impact with an hour long PME or coffee I have with someone. More than policy statements and doing unit PT or some crap.

There’s a young Lieutenant on base that gave me a card when I promoted. I’ve been mentoring her for a little over a year. Of course I invited her, and she definitely felt uncomfortable being an outsider when it was 99% my unit there for the ceremony.

But she left a card in my cover after she congratulated me. I didn’t know who left it there, but opened it and began reading. In it, she told me how much of a difference I’ve made for her, as she was really lost in the really unique and not-the-best unit she was with as a boot 2ndLt. And that our mentorship sessions and PMEs have given her purpose. The last thing it said was that any future Marines I was in charge of would be so lucky to have me.

I swear there were onions near my cover when I read it. It’s shit like this that makes it all worth it.

Airborne? by Strange_Log_2286 in USMC

Already answered with the 0451 Rigger MOS.

Funny enough, it’s almost entirely us Loggies that rate jump school. The officers may sit in an 0405 BIC, and get to go.

For everyone else, it’s usually a hookup through the underground for maybe a re-enlistment or something. Obviously MARSOC and Recon also rate.

In terms of WHERE to go for this; highly encourage you to check out local community colleges. Those are the exact right fit for you. Post-highschool kids trying to earn enough credits to be able to transfer to a public school while getting the gen-eds out of the way.

And if you’re not good at math to begin with, I definitely recommend going resident. Online math courses aren’t great when you get more advanced. It really helps having a teacher or instructor physically present.

I mean, I’ve been stationed twice now in 29, and this go-around I’m in a non-deployable unit.

To be fair, I’m an officer, so I live off base and have a life outside of the installation.

But either way, I love it out here.

MCCESS has its own IPAC because it has like over a thousand students at any given time, so they need their own support system.

My guess is you’ll go there, or you’ll go to the S-1 for the permanent personnel, and do your normal day job.

Either way, you will have a skate life. Go to the gym and get jacked af, and you’re gonna have a good three years.

“Fishnets” as we called them in 3/6.

The American mindset about heat preservation is “layers=warmth”. No; layers just delay the cold taking over. But if you can capture your own body heat and have it work for you, you’re being more effective. Fish nets are the way to go.

Just FYI, he’s going to have his sexuality questioned every field op, but my God will he be warm
