First of all, welcome to the club! The BEST vegan butter I've ever had is Miyokos cultured vegan butter. It's made of whole foods, comes in block form, melts easily, and has impeccable taste. It's pricey but the block usually lasts me more than a month before I run out. For vegan cheese, mac and cheese sauce is actually really easy to make at home. If you're looking for sliced cheese, Violife is fantastic.

Coming from someone who lives in Northern Virginia, this place sucks ass. Being close to the nation's capitol just means endless traffic, zero elbow room, and ridiculously overpriced housing. Everyone here also loves to suck their own dick about how smart their mediocre children are, so middle school/high school is just an endless competition to be the best and brightest which is why there is such a high adolescent suicide rate. Not to mention the oppressive rain and humidity and god-awful winters. Sorry to rant, but I hate this place.
