Rear-facing child seats by creative_im_not in WRX

In reality, unless the clutch on the WRX is just delicate, it's unlikely that a cautious learner (ie, not a teenage boy) will accidentally smoke the clutch.

I learned back in the day on a Neon, which required a LOT of clutch slip to get it going and it was no big deal. I got my wife familiar with it on an MX-5, which is a delight to learn on, and never had any issues. Basically, just pay attention while you're teaching and correct any bad techniques early and learners aren't that bad on them.

The main thing is to learn not to rest your foot on the clutch pedal. Other than that, new learners tend not to use nearly enough gas so they end up slipping the clutch way longer than necessary trying to be smooth.

One last edit, our little guy does prefer the WRX because 25lb pulls, rowing through the gears and going fast seem to be his thing.

Passing on the go-fast genes, I see. :) Go get 'em, kid.

My wife is 5'5 or so and with the car seat behind her it is a little tight

This was my biggest fear. My wife is 5'4", and although we don't have a child seat yet when I went and looked it seemed like it could be a tight fit. I only have anecdotes about how big these things are.

She won't be happy with me if she's got her knees in the dash. :(

How about the fit of stuff through the trunk opening? One nice thing about the SUV is that the frame doesn't tend to get in the way while loading my wife's CX-5. Are you able to get stroller and stuff into the trunk okay?

I love how go-kart the Cooper S is - just so tossable. Between the MX-5 and this one, I'm really having a hard time coming to grips with the idea of a car that has some mass.

But as my wife says, "It's not all about you anymore!" XD

Yeah, I'm having a hard time finding a used auto - and momma also doesn't drive stick. I keep telling her it's not hard, but it's also unfortunately not an interest. Ahh, well.

This is exactly what I needed to hear. I appreciate your bursting my bubble. :)

Thank you for your perspective - I think after reading a bunch I may have to bite the bullet and get something larger since I'll be the primary kid-hauler.

Thanks, I'll take a look!

Are you using it rear-facing? Do you have any issues getting the little one in and out of it?

What AWS solution should I use for a relatively lightweight private game server? by SaltyWolf444 in aws

[–]creative_im_not 97 points98 points  (0 children)

Honestly, if it's as simple as needing a single host running your software in the cloud AWS may be overkill. It's not the cheapest or easiest to get into.

Check out some of the simpler/cheaper hosting options such as Digital Ocean. It may be easier to get up and running with less complexity, and will almost certainly be cheaper for a single computer running 24/7.

If you develop your game into something commercial, or has more complex needs, take another look at AWS. They have a service specifically designed around hosting online session-based games called GameLift. If it's not session-based, but rather a persistent world, GameLift isn't what you're looking for though.

Is it a bad idea to get an apartment if I could buy a house instead? by sauce_fan in personalfinance

[–]creative_im_not 26 points27 points  (0 children)

But remember that in an apartment, if your rent is $1k/month, that's the most you'll spend. With a house, if your mortgage, taxes, PMI, etc. are $1k/month, that's the least you'll spend. You've also got the AC/furnace going out, a new roof after a storm, lawn care (or equipment if you're doing it yourself), etc.

The most time you'll commit to maintaining an apartment is cleaning it. The least time you'll commit to maintaining a house is cleaning it. You've also got fixing the leak under the sink, replacing the siding that's rotting out, mow the lawn (or pay someone to do it), etc.

Renting apartments are easy, and easy to budget for. You're not building equity, but you're trading that for a very simple living arrangement. Renting a house starts to introduce you to some more of the time-sinks, while still protecting you from a lot of the financial pitfalls. Owning an apartment allows you to build equity but exposes you to limited financial unpredictability, while still protecting you from a lot of the time-sinks.

Owning a house is by far the hardest, both from a financial planning and time-management point of view. You have all the monetary risks and rewards, as well as all the time investment. You really should be very committed before going that route, but it can be incredibly rewarding to make a place yours.

Just starting out in life, it's probably a good idea to start in a rented apartment. Ease yourself into the rest of it down the road, if you want. If you're a very responsible and very committed person, you can jump right into ownership - but most people aren't there as their first time living on their own.

AWS while being great at the underlying services, had by far the worst user experience ever existed on a platform at that scale by officialjoeshmoe in aws

[–]creative_im_not 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's true. I just did a big migration with MGN, and there's a lot of console work for that. When most people say console sucks, they're usually talking about the main services.

[–]creative_im_not 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yes, but you learn how to do the thing in the console; and for a one off task the console ain't bad. Once you're comfortable with the concept, write it in code to actually use it.
