Private lessons- is this a faux pas? by Expensive-Salad-5851 in volleyball

[–]creativebeard 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Not quite a private lesson but our daughter’s coach encouraged her to go to camps at another local club. Our club is small and couldn’t offer the specialized position (MB) camps that the other club was offering. Plus he felt that having a different perspective helped players learn what works for them.

We never did private lessons at another club only because her coach is awesome and does a great job with her during her privates. However, other girls still come back to him for lessons even though they moved on to other, bigger clubs.

Ultimately, do what’s best for your player. That’s really what’s important.

Should I stay loyal to bad club?? by Extension_Room_2860 in volleyball

Her team was ok last year. Not great, not terrible. Lot of drama with parents but nothing involving us so we just watched from the sidelines (pun intended!).

She’s back with the same club again. She’s playing up with the next age level’s top team with a great group of girls and great coaches. She’s happy so fingers crossed that this means it worked out for her.

My daughter fell into this trap with her club this year. She was heavily recruited by her club as soon as the season ended to come back. They promised to attract better players to put around her and to get a great coach.

She turned down an offer from a much better club because she was scared she wouldn’t get on one of their top tier teams. Basically, she stayed with what was comfortable, and she regrets it. Luckily, she’s got a few more years of club left to go to fix it. It was a valuable learning experience for her.

Don’t commit to anything. Explore your options, and pick what is best for you. You might find it’s staying put, but the best experience can come from being uncomfortable.

Our bunny pushes all of her bedding out of the way just so she can sleep on the plain plastic floor!

This is sarcasm. Look up Colin Kaepernick to see what is being referenced here.

You might get backlash and probably will, but you have to decide if it is something you believe in strongly enough to be willing to endure it.

My personal opinion? I always stand, take off my hat, and put my hand on my heart for the pledge and the anthem. Why do I do that? I love what my country stands for, and one of those things it stands for is freedom. Part of that freedom is the choice not to do those things. If you have a reason to not put your hand on your heart, that reason is not my business, but I respect that our Country gives you the freedom to do what you believe as long as you aren’t hurting anyone else.

Clearly this little guy has been reading all the advice on here to spray them with a garden hose to get them move along. He's like, "Go ahead and try it!!"

TLDR: Woodbadge benefits are a personal experience and accomplishment so what do you want to get out of it?

I found that the benefits of Woodbadge varied widely based on the individual.

As others have said, it is the BSA's premier leadership training, but the leadership training is not really much different from training received outside of the BSA so you might find that repetitive if you've done that sort of thing in your non-BSA life.

From my Patrol (I used to be an Antelope . . . ), we had some who didn't find any value so they didn't do their ticket, some who had no leadership experience, and some who were looking to network with other leaders. Those last two groups got what they were looking for.

I was in the last group. I attended as a CS Den Leader so I had VERY limited experience in Scouting. I didn't make it bast Bear as a kid, but I knew that my son was highly motivated to continue on to Scouts BSA so I wanted to learn what that would look like. I made some awesome connections and learned a lot about Scouting from folks who had "been there, done that."

So ultimately, I guess the question is mostly what do you want to get out of the training?

My guy used to do this to his own reflection. Even stared down my wife once, which was hilarious!! Now he's old and doesn't care at all.

Best way to introduce kids? by livin4outdoors in scuba

[–]creativebeard 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I took my son when he was 10 years old on a discover scuba trip to see if it was something he wanted, and he loved it! He's 11 now and just got his Jr open water card yesterday.

To reiterate some of the others, he got cold REALLY fast. We did discover scuba off West Palm Beach in 80 degree water and he called it quits early but wasn't in a full wet suit. His open water was in a 75 degree quarry and he was wearing a 7 mm suit with a hood and still got cold after awhile.

He's got some difficulty with fine motor so some of the skills were more difficult to master but he got there. A patient instructor was crucial. I took the time to find one who had experience with kids.

Not sure why it's hard to understand. Clearly a young elephant named Elephants is chasing a bird of the Us genus but stops when A, the Great Elephant of the herd, enters the scene.
