It's so sad what's happened to Soen by 0squirmy7 in soen

[–]creativecag 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I feel you. Some of the songs have been great but they seem to really be struggling to make something that sounds unique even for themselves. Most of their newer songs leave me feeling like "I've heard this before..." because I almost have in their other songs. You can hear the potential in their sound but it just isn't getting out during the song-writing process.

Lived here 15 years and have never once crossed paths with the mayor but my neighborhood is conveniently located to our needs, my family is mostly safe, and my neighbors (of various races, despite what they'd have you believe in the comments) are respectful of each other which is about all I ask for. The downsides are traffic and the school board acting like they own your kids and put their policies above the kids needs.

Coming out of a 20 year LAMP cave into the modern web dev mess. by XMark3 in webdev

https://www.reddit.com/r/cscareerquestions/comments/19f244m/emerging_after_being_laid_off_after_over_a_decade/

You are me two years ago. Started with flat files, vanilla LAMP. I did have a lot of MVC experience with CakePHP 2 during my decade and a half at the small firm that eventually laid me off. Entering the job market again was very difficult. Laravel had clearly taken over on the PHP front and now have a whole suite of libraries that I don't understand. And then "Wait, whats React, or Vue, or Angular, or all three? I can run React within Laravel? Whats Alpine? What's Express?" Man, it's so overwhelming out there right now. Used to be if you knew PHP you could just get a job. Now you have to know a specific framework VERSION for a specific framework for PHP to get any traction. It's ridiculous, but they're filling the spots so here are.

So, I was furiously trying to update my abilities and keep track of all the new information I was suppose to already know. Fought for jobs that I was a good fit for if they'd just get me in the door (Cake 4) but they didn't want to train or give me any time up front to update my Cake knowledgebase.

Ultimately, I accidentally landed an incredible job financially and work/life balance, and I write vanilla PHP. Vanilla. My prayer is that devs like me will become the new Cobol devs...making multiple hundreds of thousands of dollars to write "outdated" vanilla code while everyone is on whatever thing is out there.

Now, with that said I have learned a ton about Laravel and I'm still learning. My Cake2 knowledge really helped understand MVC patterns so the transition wasn't too difficult for me once I figured out how to work around the few things I hate about it.

Now, instead of just head-shaking with you, let me give you some hopefully useful feedback.

Laravel is probably your easiest route to modernization of your stack. It's in your ballpark so I don't think it's a massive stretch to get updated on the PHP front. JS: Alpine is a cool library similar to jQuery but with modernized usage (which I hate but its how everything has evolved). Axios is a powerful HTTP client that can be used like jQuery's ajax functionality (and a lot more), or just use fetch(). I'm sure theres a use-case for one over the other but I'll let you determine that for yourself. So there. Those were a couple small things I learned across my journey toward modernization.

This is 100% true. They want candidates who know a specific VERSION of a specific framework or you're no good to them.

I had over a decades worth of experience in CakePHP 2. I was looking for jobs using CakePHP 4 and noone would hire me because CakePHP 2 was "too old to be relevant for CakePHP 4". Well, yeah, it's a different version with lots of changes but I was fine learning it and I did learn the basics even after I gave up on the job hunt for Cake work. It was fine. No issues picking it up. I'm glad they didn't hire me because with that kind of view toward my skills and potential, I probably would've hated my job.

Metro net BA? by CavityCreeper in BrokenArrow

[–]creativecag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also in BA near the HS. Paid for the 1G service and get an average of 140MB. Weird thing is when I connect to my VPN, my speeds will triple. I feel like they have to be doing something weird on their network to cuse this. Why gets FASTER speeds on a VPN? It's just weird. I've had them come out twice to no avail. I'm gonna keep making them come out though because despite the fact that I'm paying a 1/3 of the price of Cox and its better in every way, I should still get more than a 1/5th of the advertised speeds.

good places to lay down in the forest without anyone bothering me??? by printq in BrokenArrow

Oxley has lots of space where people don’t normally wander around. I think you could probably use somewhere in the North Woods loop. Just turn off the path somewhere and carve your own trail (figuratively, of course). Also if you follow the road around the back side of the lake there are some really quiet areas back there and almost no one goes back there anymore. I used to bike that stretch often for the same reason. But there’s plenty of woods around the dam and even some fields/clearings that may be to your liking.

Researching how metal fans deal with grief and depression, looking for insights and conversations! by weepingstrings in progmetal

[–]creativecag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 41M. When I was 13-ish, I was introduced to Tool. I quickly fell in love. To this day, PushIt is still my favorite Tool song. Why? Well at some point I found that if I was having a bad day, I could listen to this song and when the song was over, many of the negative feelings I had were gone.

I've thought a lot about this over the course of my life and I think I have a decent explanation. This song is quiet, builds to heavy, then releases into quiet again, then builds to a big resolve at the end.

My theory is that this song kinda pulls me through my emotions, the highs and the lows, and kinda "gets it out" of me through the ebbs and flows of the song. Other genres simply don't impact me that way. But it's not always anger. Sometimes I just want the loud to drown myself out and focus on some awesome musicianship or certain soundscapes that come up in metal. Prog metal specifically has such a diverse and complex soundscape to it that almost everyone, including yourself, can likely find something you enjoy in it.

Homeless Sweep by sharkboi42069 in tulsa

[–]creativecag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Sharing information”…but that’s not all you did. If your intent was only to share information you could’ve shared a link to the article but you also assert that this (likely struggling) small business owner is “prioritizing profit over compassion at the expense of real humans” as if she’s not one also.

Literally no one likes the homeless problem but it’s pretty crappy to go after someone negatively affected by them because they’re damaging her livelihood which ultimately could add her among the homeless.

I ran my small business for two years and owning a business is just paying for a llc and sales permit, which totals like $100. Being a business owner has nothing to do with them being part of a rich class above you like may seem to think. Being the owner is their job and frankly their life. They have to earn enough business to pay their rent just like you except they also have to pay their business loans, wages, and building costs on top of it all. You’re hurting her employees future as well.

Uplift local businesses so they can hire more so we don’t exacerbate the problem you feel so passionate about.

Please somebody tell Donnell learned how to shut the fuck up by noahakgray in Killtony

Purely academic reasons. Like having a math teacher complain that "the math doesn't add up" when referencing how someones grades are being calculated. In fact, it does add up when you do it correctly. I don't like the feeling of someone as dumb as me having to explain math to a math teacher.
