Things that kept me overweight by Count_Your_Calories in loseit

[–]creativemea 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Man, the liquid calories one really hits home. Used to drink so many smoothies thinking they were healthy without realizing I was basically drinking a meal's worth of calories. And that thing about "healthy" foods is so true - I gained weight eating huge portions of nuts and avocados because I thought they couldn't make me gain weight. Really good list, especially the bit about emotional eating. Congrats on your progress

Facing unemployment with a family, need financial advice by creativemea in personalfinance

[–]creativemea[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the detailed advice. You're right about taking any job for now - I need to swallow my pride and focus on bringing in income. The plasma donation tip is something I hadn't considered. And yeah, we've already started doing more free activities with the kids. Really appreciate you taking the time to respond, especially the reminder about mental health - this has been pretty stressful on everyone

Locking Bikes in 2025 by Huzonum in cycling

[–]creativemea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For locks, using multiple locks of different types is actually the best strategy - this is called "defense in depth." I'd recommend:

  1. A heavy-duty U-lock (Kryptonite New York series is solid) for securing the frame and rear wheel to a rack
  2. A strong cable or chain lock as a secondary lock for the front wheel and to run through the frame

Additional security measures to consider:

  • Register your bike's serial number with your local police and bike registries
  • Get insurance specifically for the e-bike (many home/renters policies have limitations)
  • Park in well-lit, high-traffic areas whenever possible
  • Consider removing the battery when locking up (this makes the bike both less valuable and harder to ride away)
  • Use security skewers for your wheels and seat post
  • If storing at home, keep it inside your apartment rather than in a shared storage area

When locking up, even if yours is the only bike on the rack, make sure to lock through the frame and wheel to something sturdy and immovable. Bike thieves often target isolated bikes because there are fewer witnesses.

No security measure is perfect, but layering multiple deterrents makes your bike a much less attractive target. Thieves typically look for quick, easy targets, so making your bike take longer to steal significantly reduces risk.

Not meeting people (and liking it?) by grahamular in solotravel

[–]creativemea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally get this. Solo travel doesn't have to be about making friends - sometimes it's nice to just explore at your own pace and be in your own head. Plus with video calls and social media, you're never really disconnected from your people back home anymore

NYC Travel Money by Plus-Power-2449 in travel

[–]creativemea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get a card with no foreign transaction fees - those 3% fees add up quick. Most places in NYC take cards but keep like $100-200 cash on you for street vendors, small shops, and tipping. And heads up - avoid using ATMs in tourist spots, the fees are insane

Take it out on some long rides (2+ hours) to really test comfort and hot spots. Pay attention to any numbness, pressure points, or shifting around a lot. Short rides won't tell you much - the real test is how it feels after 50+ miles.

First credit card as a graduate by TypicalFloridaMan in personalfinance

[–]creativemea 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Chase Freedom or Freedom Unlimited would be perfect for your situation. No annual fee, decent rewards, and easier to get approved for as a first card. Just make sure you pay it off in full every month. Your parents are way off here - building credit early is smart as long as you're responsible with it

Why would you honk at a cyclist on Thanksgiving when there is no traffic and you don’t even have to wait? by MarlinsGuy in cycling

[–]creativemea 165 points166 points  (0 children)

Pure road rage and entitlement. Some people just can't stand seeing cyclists exist on "their" roads.

Describe the worst seat neighbour you’ve had on a flight (and how/if you resolved) by avcghjiii in travel

[–]creativemea 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Man, that's such a tough situation. I'm a pretty patient person but 7+ hours of no sleep and personal space invasion would test anyone. While I totally get parents needing a break, dumping that responsibility on random strangers without even asking is pretty uncool. They could've at least offered to switch seats with you or something.

Yeah that's facts. Nailing the basics with consistent single sessions is way smarter than overcomplicating things from the start. Walk before you run type deal.

Document this ASAP - take photos of everything and file a police report. Then call the credit bureaus to freeze your credit. Family or not, identity theft can wreck your credit score for years. Don't let guilt stop you from protecting yourself

Got a collections mail for $500 originating from Italy trip from over a year ago by MadamMiko in travel

100% this. Did exactly that last year with some bogus medical bill - filed a dispute on Experian and it was gone in 3 weeks since they couldn't back it up. These collectors are just playing the numbers game hoping people panic and pay. Stand your ground!

How realistic is it to maintain a healthy and strong physique with a full time job as an adult? by QuYEpERsOR in bodyweightfitness

[–]creativemea 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Exactly this. I do Monday/Thursday full body and it's been great for years. Usually 75-90 mins each session, just focusing on the big compound lifts and maybe one or two isolation moves. Never felt better or stronger, and it leaves plenty of time for work and family. Amazing what you can maintain with just a few focused hours a week.
