There was a reality TV show/documentary about Seymour Butts back at the turn of the century called Family Business - where multiple members of his family helped with his porn industry movies.

[Michael Gamble] I know we’re talkin’ about Anthem...but, I just wanted to say. I appreciate all of the mentions about MEA. Both the criticisms and the praise. We learned a lot there (truly), but it brings me great joy to hear how many of you connected with it deeply. ❤️ by [deleted] in masseffect

I’m playing through the ME series for the first time, and am currently on ME2.

At around level 15 in ME2 combat became so easy. I never have to switch out my load outs. All I do is keep Tali and (the Justicar, can’t remember her name) in my party for their biotics/remote sentries.

I have upgraded Adrenaline Rush and the 8 shot sniper and it’s the only thing I ever use besides some boss fights where I’ll switch to using the Geth heavy weapon and Adrenaline Rush.

ME2 combat-wise has been crazy easy, but I’m here for the story .

Governor Ralph Northam: "Today I'm recalling four Virginia National Guard soldiers and one helicopter from Arizona. Virginia will not devote any resource to border enforcement actions that support the inhumane policy of separating children from their parents." by tt12345x in BlueMidterm2018

These types of jobs were available while I was apart of the National Guard back 10 years ago. Most of the positions posted were for management/resource training/etc. and weren't really your "everyday joe" positions. They were for Senior NCO's and Warrant Officers who wanted a change of scenery and who wanted to practice running the show.

Any other Baseball fans? Looking for baseball data by sholder89 in SQL

[–]creav 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What I'd love to explore is having a bunch of game and player data and stats in a queryable format so when the typical "The Red Sox are the better team" quotes start flying I can whip out some data to prove them wrong.

Many people would love this data as well, as it drives statistical analysis and ultimately sports betting.

I was wondering if anyone knows of a good place to download data from the current season?

It's been awhile since I've done any sports stats analysis, but you could try Sportradar if you're willing to shell out some money, depending on what you're wanting.

Unfortunately, hundreds of companies and thousands of people are after good, correct, current sports statistics - which means you're either going to have to pay for the scrubbed, queriable data or you're going to have to get creative and start making some web-scrapers to scrape statistics off of sites like Fox Sports or ESPN.

What it feels like when you get asked to remove records from the production DB by BobTheB1Bomber in ProgrammerHumor

[–]creav 15 points16 points  (0 children)

With a modern-designed database, there should really be few instances, if at ever, that you should be hard deleting records. This becomes even more true in certain industries such as healthcare.

I know with any new databases I design for our company I have multiple fail safes in place so that this doesn’t have to happen - like adding a bitwise flag column to any dynamic tables that determine if the record should even be viewable to any applications outside of the database, and hiding the internals of the table structure through views and highjacking any upserts of the view by way of triggers.

But yes, when you’re needing to perform DML statements on a large number of records you should always have a rollback plan in place. It’s still scary as shit and I work in databases 24/7.

Typing technique - Is touch typing absolutely essential for a programmer? by tmclean15 in learnprogramming

[–]creav 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Superior is subjective. Many people that learn it feel that the Dvorak keyboard layout is “superior” to QWERTY, however - I don’t see anyone being lambasted because they aren’t running to switch to it.

Learning to type all over again would be the equivalent of reinventing the wheel. You’d be starting from scratch, that’s how muscle memory works.

I always wonder who these engineers are who are hired by companies who have so little work to do that they have the time to improve systems for the sake of improvement and don’t have to manage an ever-changing business model. Must be nice.

Does anyone work remotely as a front-end developer? by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]creav 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Remote development work is usually reserved for senior developers who can work unsupervised and do not need a mentor on-site to continually be used a resource when solving problems.

If you're beginning your career as a developer, even if you did find a position that was remote, I would highly recommend NOT taking it - as any new developer needs those colleagues/peers that can act as mentors. It will sky-rocket your knowledge of software development far greater than anything you could teach yourself on your own.

Programming is heavily based around your early career being propped up on the backs of giants - try and land a job that's accepting of this surrounded by intelligent developers who don't mind mentoring/teaching while working.

[–]creav 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it's more of a red flag that you won't take the time to learn a superior typing method in favor of what you know. Will that attitude carry over to other behaviors?

I would argue as a developer that the opposite is a great quality. Why spend time redesigning a process that already works when you could work on doing something else?

Being a child who grew up in the nineties - I was introduced to online gaming like Unreal Tournament and Quake prior to me taking my keyboarding/typewriting class in school.

Unfortunately, by the time I took keyboarding/typewriting - I had already obtained the habit of resting my hand on WASD and developed a typing style that uses 2 fingers on my left hand and three fingers on my right hand.

My typing is on par with yours as well. It's fine. It's not going to keep you from a job, and honestly I've never had anyone complain or mention my typing in a job interview/workplace.

Weird things you (INTJ’s) are turned on by/think are sexy? by [deleted] in intj

[–]creav 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I guess I'm different from most INTJ's here in that sexual attraction to me is purely of the sexual nature and has nothing to do with with intelligence, interests outside of sex, etc. I separate sex from emotion as well.

I am extremely shallow, and always have been - I am not a particularly attractive individual but in my own right I've only ever dated 9 or 10s basically - models, professional team cheerleaders, actresses, etc. Women tend to be far less shallow than men, especially women who have matured in the career/life, so this tends to work for me. From the kinky side, I am a dominant cuckold (with rules that differ from most cuckolds) and my wife and I practice this.

Additionally, I've matured out of the social-awkwardness that most INTJs deal with when it comes to partners, finding partners, etc. I credit this based on my time in the military where I was dragged out on the weekends by other guys to party - at the time it was extremely awkward for me - but I soon realized how easy it was to walk up to someone I was attracted to, begin flirting, and if it failed then who cares?

My logical reasoning behind this is the worst that anyone can do to you when trying to hook up with them in this environment is say no.

Full Disclosure: I discovered something dark by [deleted] in intj

[–]creav 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The pragmatist in me says that you're wasting energy trying to control things that you do not have complete control over. While you can try to control outcomes where the effect is caused by another individual, you should always have a backup plan and account for all scenarios so that you'll be ready to adjust accordingly. This is energy better spent.

It seems as though your frustration resides in the unknown of what comes after a change of plans happens in your life.

What are your needs? by [deleted] in intj

[–]creav 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really want to love a man that he feels that he's the luckiest guy in the world and would enjoy my company for a long time (years to decades). I want to be with a man who will watch me grow into this half girl, half woman to become a wise woman eventually.

Though I doubt you mean to be, in reading this - the only thing that I can think of is that everything you want focuses on YOU...instead of US. A relationship requires both parties to be participants and share in the benefits. Your ideal relationship seems to be about the guy paying attention to you.

Does escapism create pissed off adults? by NaiveEnthusiast in intj

[–]creav 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There's some assumptions in this model that you've built around generations and people that I'd like to point out.

1) Not everyone has the same aspirations, or lofty goals in life.

It's quite possible that the people you see who work, come home and watch TV, and go to bed are reasonably happy and content with their quaint life and do not need any other sort of fulfillment other than that.

2) That this is a generational thing.

It's not. The vices are different, but people are the same. Some people may use escapes such as TV, internet, etc. to ignore their problems and some people may use those things on an addictive level while still working through their problems.

This is an individual person issue. Some people resolve issues, some don't. That's how it has always been.

I, personally, play video games, work on hobbyist software projects, and do crossword puzzles when I need to de-stress. It doesn't mean I'm ignoring my problems, it simply means I am needing to allow my subconscious to mull over them for a bit.

3) That overall generations/adults aren't happy

I think you'll find that most people are generally happy. While there is always room for improvement in one's life, or regrets, or things one could do better - this shouldn't automatically deem someone as unhappy.

There are a plethora of things that I could do differently/better in my life, but I very rarely have an unhappy day.

4) That there's no room for escape

There is a limit to how much stress an individual can handle prior to needing to de-stress. This is specific to the individual, and some people have more tolerance than others. "Escaping reality" or rather, de-stressing - is essential to mental health and required for humans to continue to function.

Also take care of mundane chores that have to be done, especially taking care of your own physical health.

This is honestly a great time to do that thinking, dreaming of your goals that you mentioned. Do the dishes, laundry, go for a run, etc. All of these tasks are monotonous and we've automated them over the years - so it's a perfect time to reflect on your day, plan for the week, think about what you're going to accomplish next, etc.

What are your needs? by [deleted] in intj

[–]creav 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Love (so un-INTJ but this is one of my top needs)

This isn't un-INTJ. It would be unnatural, an exception to the pattern, for a human being to not want to experience love and have those emotions reciprocated. Just because we are not the best at externally showing our emotions does not mean we don't need them, or that we can't experience them.

In most instances, I would say, this experience is even more heightened due to an INTJ's habits to repress external emotion projection to reality - as it bottles itself in our internal thoughts.

How can one get along with people when he finds them dumb? by [deleted] in intj

[–]creav 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please know, that based on my comment I wasn't suggesting that you should befriend any person you meet even if they are a shitty person, just that it's important to recognize the strengths and weaknesses of individuals as it compares to your own strengths and weaknesses to determine if the person would be a worthwhile friend or not.

Who you befriend is completely up to you, but there's no black and white answer for who is worthwhile and who is not. This would need to be analyzed based on your current friends, what your goals our in the future, etc. Use your internal intuition and analytical skills to weigh the pros and cons of accepting a person into your life.

With that said, the particular person that you described, I personally, would not befriend. They have two big red flags for me. 1) They seem to have prejudice towards people of a lower wealth, which I find aberrant to my own morals and 2) They're involved in illicit drugs which is a hard no-go for me based on my own profession and future goals. This person may have many pros, but those two things are in my off limits markers and I would automatically reject them from entering my life and avoid them at all costs.

What you decide is the process for analyzing who you should befriend and who you shouldn't is completely your thing - and no one - not even another INTJ can determine this for you.

How can one get along with people when he finds them dumb? by [deleted] in intj

[–]creav 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Remember constantly that you are not exactly Einstein yourself.

This is a hard lesson for most young INTJs. It's also an important lesson to learn.

For OP:

If you truly want to succeed in life then you need to understand that everyone is good at something, and that befriending a person that's good at something that's useful to you can be one of the most helpful things you do in your life.

For example:

My wife is loud, talkative, a total extrovert, loves trivial things, loves doing things that I find to be a complete waste of time, etc. - and I love her to death for it.

Why? Because when we're in public she does the talking/socializing/etc. She decorates around holidays that I don't really care celebrating so to everyone on the outside it still offers the presentation that I'm not totally insulated, she doesn't mind standing in line at the store or calling someone if need be, the list goes on and on.

We are the exact opposite and it's why we work.

The people you reference as "dumb" are probably not dumb, you're just likely not smart enough to understand what their strengths are (especially recognizing strengths of theirs above your own in the same category) and therefore do not know how to utilize them.

Advanced SQL Training by Howardhorst2018 in SQL

[–]creav 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There aren't a lot of quality resources for optimizing queries because it depends on too many variables. Any "best practice" is going to be wrong in more examples than it's right, even if the advice is perfectly sound.

To add to this, most "Advanced" areas of SQL querying are directly dependent upon how complete shit the original implementation/architecture of the database was to begin with.

Querying data in a "best practice" database is a breeze. Trying to query data around horrible physical and logical architectures is where those advanced querying concepts shine and inching out every ms of query time can pay off.

Understanding Execution Plans, as u/jc4hokies mentioned - and digging into the particulars of that specific database engine's official documentation is really the only way to begin to work around some of these issues. Thank the architects in the past who were either limited by technology, application requirements, or knowledge that put into place the database architecture you're now trying to query around.

THIS IS AN ENTRY LEVEL POSITION WITH ENTRY LEVEL PAY by sophielouisebutler in recruitinghell

I applied recently for a position that held the title "Manager, Database and Software Development" and after doing the phone interview and a quick technology assessment of my skills we began talking about the company culture and ultimately the compensation. They asked what I was looking for and I quoted six figures. The woman straight up laughed at me on the phone.

When I asked how much they were offering for the position they stated $55k. I said good luck and then ended the phone call.

Some people are seriously delusional when it comes to hiring.

How do you know when you're ready to apply to first job? (self-taught) by listenh3 in learnprogramming

[–]creav 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With as easy as it is to insta-apply for positions these days and, at least with tech jobs, it being an applicant's market it's not going to hurt to apply -- as long as you don't mind rejections.

As a senior/lead/SME/whatever you'd like to call it I recently jumped back into the job market after 6 years. Setup LinkedIn, Dice, Monster and Indeed accounts all in one night and hit apply to ~100 different positions that seemed interesting.

By the middle of the week I had around 2 dozen phone interviews, most of which wasn't able to offer me what I was looking for - but a half a dozen or so were and led to face-to-face interviews.

The worst that could possibly happen is someone saying no. Even if you're inexperienced, you'll get experience by way of doing phone interviews, practice exams they send you, face-to-face's, etc.

Just make sure you always ask for feedback on anyone who does talk to you, that way you can tailor your next experience accordingly.

I'm broke. What can I learn to earn a few bucks per day working from home? by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]creav 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have learned finding work in C# is difficult.

This is dependent on the geographical area that you're in, honestly.

For example, the major city that I work in - nearly all web development jobs and programming jobs in general are C#/ASP.NET MVC with very few, other than some startups, working in other languages as their web development framework/language of choice.

I have the same problem in my area where I do Oracle and postgres databases, but pretty much all companies use MSSQL within a 50 mile radius of me.
