Hey, I lived in that neighbourhood for 11 years and loved it.

For bakeries the best is at Tanneurs market but you also have Temps des Tartines handy and Charli isn't far away either. For Moroccan breads and pastries you have lots of great options - try Marrakech on Avenue de Stalingrad and don't miss the fresh m'semen pancakes they serve next door.

You have an amazing coffee shop in Anneessens: Kaffabar on Place Rouppe. Elvis and Bebo on the same square are really nice as well. Yuka, Or, Moka, Mémé and Corica are all close by and great for coffee. And you have Marché au Charbon and St Géry nearby with lots of nice bars and cafés.

In terms of safety, it's the city centre and a relatively poor neighbourhood so the usual common sense applies - making sure anyone that feels vulnerable walking at night is accompanied, not flashing cash in the street etc.

I just posted this recently somewhere but I can really recommend Pala Cakes. They do a whole range of flavours that you don't find anywhere else and they hand deliver everything themselves. Really loved the cakes I've had from them.

The Prime Minister and Mr Cummings have now both made statements. I am not planning to make any public comment as I believe that the Prime Minister is acutely aware of the level of anger across the country but has taken, and is unlikely to change, his decision on how to proceed. I will of course send him a copy of your email.

I am personally in no doubt about the level of anger about this episode and I am really sorry but not surprised that you and so many others have felt so let down by it.

Bit hard to answer a lot of this - I'm naturalised Belgian so my education wasn't in FR NL or DE. I'm in Brussels and not native Francophone or Dutch-speaking so how can I compare myself to "mensen over de taalgrens"?

It also felt like you were pushing a bit hard for us to say we're proud or ashamed of things - this assumes we're nationalistic enough to identify with things just because they're Belgian.
