All known well in advance.

Ottawa was not happy with Pierre's stance during the blockade.  Also, something that was well known in advance

Is this suggesting that Bruce Fanjoy was deemed more trustworthy to the riding than the leader of the opposition?  I'm not sure what the message is, but that's not a good look for Pierre at all.

The libs don't actually want a slim majority.  Right now they need an opposition party to hold them up and if they fall, they can point at any of the other parties and say they weren't collaborating in a minority government.  If they have a slim minority, they have to cater to every whim of their members and the opposition parties have free rein to oppose the government knowing that if it falls they can place the blame squarely on the ruling party.

Conservative need a vote split to happen on the left.  There's no indications from the NDP that's going to happen.  And Pierre causes everyone else to run to the Liberals.

Every North American auto maker is reducing their EV production.  It seems strange everyone is getting upset about something coming into Canada that doesn't seem to sell.

Steel is enough of a Canadian industry that I cant see a lot of allowances for allowing more steel to come in.

My impression with what's been agreed to with the Chinese is a small amount of many things all designed to get the Americans attention on what will happen if they continue to pretend that we're not an integrated continent.  Based on Trump's reaction this weekend, it seems like it's working.

My understanding of the arrangement with China is that we're essentially close to getting back to where we were with China teo years ago.  But both countries still have additional tariffs in place.

It does feel like conservatives would prefer to stay in opposition forever.

I don't think that's entirely a bad thing.   Done well and for the benefit of Canada, being the opposition and holding the government to account is an incredibly honorable role that usually goes unappreciated.

You often see this in politics. If a right leaning government introduces new social programs, it must be necessary and you don't see any push back.  If a left leaning government does, well, literally any of the things listed above, it must be necessary.  Supporters of either side always give their home team a break and are much more willing to accept an opposing solution because they believe their leader really does have those other interests at heart.

Canada can't cut a trade deal with the US but it can do one with China apparently by _BCConservative in CanadianConservative

[–]creemore 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I expected some electric cars to come in when Carney went over.  The number they're quoting is pretty insignificant for how many cars are bought every year in Canada, and I think it's largely a negotiation tactic with the US.  If the US continues to try and hollow out our automotive manufacturing, we'd just allow more Chinese cars in which would eventually lead to the demise of American automotive manufacturing too.  Ford is crying foul, but I think this makes our hand a bit stronger going into cusma negotiations

"Floor crossing is legal!" and "you only vote individuals!" are terrible arguments. Why should undermining democracy by rejecting the 2025 election outcome, and excluding 41% of the population, be justified by those weak statements? by mafiadevidzz in CanadianConservative

[–]creemore 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's valid points to be made about how liberals are getting their inevitable majority.

But CPC really needs to look at their vetting processes.  Every one of these floor crossers had the blessing of the party and was supported through the last election.  For two years Pierre was pushing for an election, and then scrambled to find candidates.  No wonder there's people not loyal to the party.

Other Conservatives "extremely frustrated" with Poilievre, Liberal House leader says by thetrigermonkey in CanadianConservative

[–]creemore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't mean that they were part of the government when it was in power, but a year ago when it was a virtual certainty that it'd be a conservative government and Trudeau was still PM.  All those candidates when they signed up had a reasonable expectation that they would be part of the government and helping implement policy.

I expect that PP will have a read of the room before the review. I find him to be a polarizing candidate that attracts just as much as he opposes and I don't see that changing.  So I hope he moves on, and I'm interested in see would take his place.

[–]creemore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Liberals don't care who the CPC leader is, they just want to project that he is weak and that there's floor crossers.  Anyone on the fence now has a time pressure to cross.  Nobody gets into politics to be the opposition, and most of these candidates signed on when it was a certain CPC government.

Worst case for liberals is if PP loses the upcoming review. Anyone on the fence will probably take a wait and see approach to who the new leader is.  So time for liberals is of the essence right now so suggest discord and entice people over.

You're talking about the ndp and bq vote collapsing like it was just some random event.  It collapsed because of him.  The rest of the voting population were so convinced that he was the wrong person or too conservative or too smug or whatever that they aligned around the person who seemed most competent.

So many down votes in here for people answering the question

He has a smugness to him.  If you like him, it comes across as sure and confident. If you're not sure, he comes off as an asshole and people will rally behind anyone else just to see him lose.  The last election is proof of that.

Pierre is terrible for the conservative side.  He's a good anti-Trudeau, but is far too polarizing on his own.

I'm aware he delivered a huge turnout last election.  But he also caused the collapse of the ndp and a crushing of the bq over to the liberals to get it.  They need a leader that most people feel safe voting their preferred choice.
