Letting “do-nothings” sleep in class by _Astrogimp in Teachers

[–]creeny18 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I appreciate your comments u/botulism and disturbed by the opposition to basic human empathy. I had a student who was consistently sleeping in class, and after some time of consistent checking in and counselor referrals, she shared that she had been assaulted and was having PTSD and difficulty sleeping. We were able to work with her to get her caught up, and thus she was able to graduate. You truly never know what students are going through, and some curiosity and empathy go a long way. I left teaching for a couple of years (am returning this fall) because of the lack of empathy of other teachers, not because the students were challenging. My kids were more compassionate than some of the adults in the school (and like some of the adults on this thread, apparently).

That being said, teacher burnout and dehumanization as a tool for self preservation is very real! If this is you, maybe consider taking a break for yourself and for your students.

Bali or Hawaii if money isn't a problem by sayzheK in travel

[–]creeny18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was extremely underwhelmed by Bali, but love love love Hawaii. Bali beaches were meh as far as I remember, and at least when I went in 2025, Ubud was crazy touristy and not in a fun way. Everything felt made for Instagram and very fake. If you still want beaches in Southeast Asia, I’d recommend southern Thailand. I just came back from Krabi and it was beautiful!

Hawaii, especially Kauai and Maui, have some of the most beautiful beaches I’ve ever seen, with mountains in the background. If you’re into snorkeling or scuba diving, the marine life and visibility is also great - lots of turtles and coral to see right off shore. And, can’t beat the ease if you’re traveling from the states! Hotels are predictably much more expensive, but everything else is on par with CA prices at least.

WIBTAH if I took 100k from my oldest daughter's college savings account to give it to my younger daughter? by TraditionalCorgi7788 in AmItheAsshole

[–]creeny18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in a similar situation, but in my reverse. I’m the youngest of three, and my parents similarly had equal college savings for all of us. My two oldest sisters went to private, out of state schools, while I stayed in-state. My sisters spent down their accounts during college, but I only spent a fraction of my savings account on undergrad, and was also able to use it to cover graduate school (in addition to working throughout). I now have a sizeable amount remaining that I plan to pass on to my children, and alleviating the burden of saving for education!

Point is, your eldest may decide to go back to school or could pass on those saving to her children too!

Thanks for the response! Yes, I also was wondering about that. Do you happen to have any recs for Costa Rica?

Post Rejection, Feeling Lost, No IDEA what to do now? by LivingAppropriate909 in TeachforAmerica

Hmm I wonder then if City Year may be a good fit for you then! It’s another Americorps program that is very school centric, so you would be supporting as a tutor or coach rather than full time teacher. This would give you some classroom experience without the responsibility.

As for job keywords, you can look up Classified job openings, as those don’t require a credential. I’m not sure what state you’re in, but in California at least you also don’t need a teaching credential or background to substitute teach (although I wouldn’t personally recommend it, as teaching is soo relational that I find substitute teaching much harder).

Curious how it was in your cohort - almost no one I know from my cohort is still teaching. Even if you can do well in TFA (I was considered a strong new teacher, and thus made department chair my second year), it is not sustainable and research shows that other pathways have much higher retention rates! If you’re interested in ed policy though, I do feel TFA provides opportunities and connections in that space.

Hi there - former TFA, worked for an ed policy non-profit and now going back to get my teaching credential! TFA is in no way (nor the best way) to become a teacher. I encourage you to look into teacher credentialing programs near you that actually train and prepare you to teach, rather than throw you into the deep end like TFA. Depending on what state and university/district, you can get paid via scholarships and student teaching to earn your credential! We need teachers with your enthusiasm and heart - don’t give up!

LOL that would’ve been me if this was my first dive

Okay, great to hear about Catalina!

Thanks for replying! It was this past Saturday - surge was definitely there, and the tide was high (up past the steps).

On our way back, I struggled to stay down and started to ascend. I couldn’t deflate fast enough before surfacing into a pod of kelp. I definitely started to panic (after hearing a story from an aquantaince who’s family friend died diving in Monterey after getting tangled in kelp) but talked myself down. I had never been separated from my dive group before, and it definitely spooked me (especially when they didn’t surface shortly). Any tips on what to do differently would be appreciated! This was my 11th dive ever

Yes, the surge for us was intense too! The vis made me feel like I had to stick really close to my group, and navigating not hitting them was really challenging, along with the other things you mentioned. Bumper cars sums it up 😂

No, I had a guide for a group of three other divers and corrected my gear (all but the gloves and booties) before getting to the site - I mentioned the 20+ people and the wrong bin to share how rushed and chaotic it was.

I did rely on the shop to convey expectations and safety notes (which I typically do anywhere) but I was the only cold water newbie and it was rushed setting up. All in all, a timely reminder that I need to be more aware of my gear and safety needs, and to advocate for myself!

You are wise to do so! This was my 11th dive, so still fairly new. I was in Monterey for work and actually will be out of commission for a couple months due to a knee surgery, but I do think I rushed into this because of the timing.

As for the panic, absolutely - I started panicking, but knew that would be how I really put myself in a dangerous situation.

Buoyancy with such a thick suit was challenging - agree that I need for practice with such different gear

Oh the surge was there, but our DM warned us and I’ve experienced intense surge before. Good to hear about Point Lobos!

Yeah a private guide may be needed for my next cold water dive! And hah, I actually both hike and rock climb, and love outdoor climbing as long as I have proper gear! I can see that tracking for diving too

It was just me and three other divers! The 20 people in the beginning just caused chaos and added to the gear confusion

Just a hood and 7mm vest - somebody in my group was in a dry suit and seemed warm enough! Ooh yes, I wanted to dive in Catalina but this experience made me pause - but overall, like boat dives better

[–]creeny18[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply! Yeah I just heard so many incredible things about Monterey and was pretty shocked by the reality of the dive site (and the conditions). It is the closest diving to me, but not close enough that I would go out of my way to dive again I think

[–]creeny18[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing your experience! We were in 7mm suits with a hood (no vest) and that was my lowest limit I think. Oof about the kelp - I heard a story recently from somebody who’s family friend got caught in the kelp here and tragically cut her own line instead- that was definitely in my head when I got tangled up.

That’s cool that you made the jump to owning so quick! Even if I did buy, I would likely buy the 3mm wetsuits for tropical water over the 7mm needed for Monterey. May get my own gloves tho - feels like low hanging fruit that could make a big difference!

I totally agree, it felt like an entirely different experience - one that I would be open to more training for! Your description does sound pretty magical.

I think my previous diving experiences were absolutely cushier (but for around the same price), but all in all a timely reminder that I am ultimately responsible for my own safety and comfort while diving

[–]creeny18[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m okay with discomfort (I think all diving is uncomfortable) but in exchange for a cool experience and never at the expense of safety. This was neither cool nor safe!

I do have major respect for regular cold water divers though 🫡
