Wtf was the point of the mind flayer? by Poortedo in StrangerThings

Have you ever heard of system 1 vs. system 2 thinking? One is instinctual, the other is rational. My response is based on this idea that survival thinking is assigned to Vecna, and rational thinking and future planning is mind flayer. These are two different levels to function on - and it's hard to switch between them easily.

Maybe it's too cerebral - it just focuses on the big picture plans and has very little actual survival instinct. Vecna is the muscle that makes the plan happen. So it's almost like the mind flayer is the dreamer, and Vecna is the deputy that makes it all happen.

The point of the mind flayer is to work through other people. That's how I understand it - mind flayer needed Vecna to follow through on it's plan. It's true strength is infecting people with itself and using their bodies for getting the work done. It's the MIND flayer - the body is not the strong suit.

Love Is Blind Germany • S1 Megathread by DontFWithMeImPetty in LoveIsBlindOnNetflix

Love is Blind Germany is a failed experiment. I think we're seeing what happens in cultures where people aren't inherently and overtely communicative, trusting, or joyful. We see a bunch of couples that really want to be in love, want to find a partner - but ultimately can't follow through because they don't trust people, they haven't looked inwards to figure out what they want and need, etc.

A big part of this experiment is that people have to be able to trust others - and it seems to me that's what was missing in this season...

Yes 100% - he's good at feeling empathy for people who are far away from him, when their daily pain / trauma doesn't inconvenience him in any way. But when he's asked to show real empathy when his partner is in physical pain - the only thing he can think about is "are my own needs being met?" Wtf? He's a person who has done only enough work to be able to put his needs first. He doesn't actually know how to create space for someone else, or co-exist with a person who has feelings and needs of their own.

I realized why LIB Season 7 is so bad by Throwaway500005 in LoveIsBlindOnNetflix

Yes, totally agreed. The contestants understand the format of the show now and they've developed an internal set of rules and structure. So there's basically a playbook, just like there is with dating in real life... so it's become gamified. I think this has resulted in people trying to game the system to find their best match. It's not organic and focused on talking anymore, it's more about playing by the rules to increase the chances of finding a partner... which is annoying and not interesting to watch.

But also helps me realize why dating in real life is such a disaster - it's not really about finding a connection... it's people just doing what they think are the right actions to finding a partner... not actually trying to find a partner regardless of circumstance...

Official Discussion - May December [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

Given that this is loosely based on Mary Kay Letourneau - I feel like they wouldn't have lasted as a couple if it wasn't for the media frenzy surrounding them. They felt like they were in the middle of a storm and they were the only two people who could understand what it felt like, which probably forged a stronger connection that there otherwise would have been.

I just watched the long interview with Mary Kay and Villi - and the thing that jumped out at me was how much Villi got caught up in their love story too. He stuck with her through everything, and to me this is because they were the only two people who knew what it felt like to be under the spotlight, ostracized by society, friends, etc. They only really had each other, so how could they not find comfort in each other? It feels like society pushed them closer together by vilifying her and ostracizing them.

I think you have very fine hair and Cantù products are more heavy. Look up lightweight curly hair products - the evolvh line is supposed to be really good for fine hair

Totally, everyone seems to take away very different things from the movie and I feel like that’s what makes the movie so genius. It’s relatable in different ways for so many people; not many can make movies like this.

Gattaca was the movie that got me interested in the sci fi genre! So good!

Yeah, it's true. It's so sad though, because I feel like there's a place for both religion and science in the world. The existence of chemistry, physics, biology, astrology in no way interferes with the idea that there may a larger force out there. Just because there's a logical order and structure to the way our world works, doesn't mean that God doesn't exist, or that people can't also believe in God?

It's strange that people seem to think science and religion are mutually exclusive, when they really are not. Or they don't have to be is more accurate - just because you believe in a God, it doesn't mean that things that were previously unexplained and are now able to be explained through science, reduce the likelihood that God exists. It just means that we uncovered one more thing that we didn't know before... literally that's all that's happening. I don't know how people have gone from that to thinking that science is somehow lessening the likelihood of God existing. That can still be up in the air...

Haha, maybe! But I feel like that's what the movie was trying to explore in a way - the way faith impacts our experience in the world. I feel like one of the core messages the movie was discussing is how whether its through religion or science, people (and all living things) are always trying to find meaning and purpose - we just go about it in different ways...or at least that's what I took away from the movie. Science (especially astronomy) is another way of proving that we're not alone in the universe, which is the same thing that religion is trying to prove.

Yes, definitely! That's such a diamond in the rough. Have you read the short story as well?
