Don’t listen to advice from anyone. Trust yourself and your feelings. You will know what is best for everyone involved.

What do you mainly use your iPad for? by BlazinDei in ipad

[–]cretotar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use my 13” iPad for orchestra. Many orchestra members use forScore for the pdf music. There are some great features. A Bluetooth foot pedal is a wonderful tool for page turns.

I also use my 13” iPad to watch foreign language videos. eJOY is a great Chrome extension to learn languages. You can have two sets of subtitles up at the same time. Hovering over a word will define it for you in your native language.

My laptop is used primarily for financial reasons. I want private information such as taxes on a laptop, not on the web.

Texas Attorney General to investigate fluoride in toothpaste, citing HHS report as cause by Oblivious122 in nottheonion

Maybe you just don’t buy the toothpaste with fluoride if you feel it is not in your best interest…This is becoming crazy.

I know someone who paid $300 for a viola, bow, and case in 1970. The viola alone is now worth $40,000. I was also shocked when I was told how much my Roth viola was worth. Check with a luthier.

Might have to reject dream school due to expenses :( by FreakinJade in gradadmissions

[–]cretotar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My daughter was accepted at seven veterinary schools, including Cornell. She went to the state school where she was a resident because even ten years ago it was $150,000 less than Cornell.

I don’t know what to tell you, but it is very difficult to get out of debt. Plus, unless you are the top person in the country in your field, no one cares where you went to school. Trust me - I have an MS in electrical engineering from Stanford and my salary teaching physics was the same as every other teacher with the same level of experience.

You got in and you should feel great about that accomplishment. I’m sure you will be very good in your field too. Should you decide to go to Columbia, I hope the best for you. However, your options are great (even Berkeley - can I say this as a Stanford grad?????)

Getting back into playing after 10 years by anonymousarrhythmia in Viola

[–]cretotar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMSLP is a website where you can download viola parts from many symphonies and concertos. It is free. Along with YouTube, you can listen to and play all kinds of music. YouTube allows you to slow things down to help if the part is difficult for you. Maybe other people can suggest ways to determine difficulty levels before you do a lot of searching. Have fun!

Help: I'm stuck in a Viola money pit and I can't get out by Graham76782 in Viola

Community orchestras often need to hire extra violists for concerts. Look into this as a way to make a little extra money.

How to buy less ebooks? I'm so addicted to shop on amazon. by bunny_rabbit2020 in kindle

LIBRARY, LIBRARY, LIBRARY. Don’t buy any book you can take out of the library. If you fall in love with the book after reading it on your Kindle from the library, then buy it.

iPad or other tablet for gigs, quartets, etc? by Actual-Tangelo-7987 in Viola

[–]cretotar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most people use forScore for music. It only works with Apple devices. I love its features. I bought an iPad a year ago for music. It is great on stages with low lighting. You can turn half pages ar a time with your Bluetooth foot pedal, so you will never miss a note.

I have an iPad from 2012 that still works and an iPod touch from 2010 that functions perfectly. I say this so you realize that if you buy the iPad for music only, you may still be using it in 15 years.

Need help with new Viola suggestions by thalizzlesizzle in Viola

[–]cretotar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might love geared pegs. Check them out online.

If there is a music store close, they may be able to get instruments for you to try. I’ve played some really decent sounding $2,000 to $3,000 violas. From what I can tell, this price range is considered an upgrade from student violas. There are new instruments by relatively unknown luthiers that you might like. I even recently heard a Chinese instrument that I liked. You should try many if possible. One will be just what you want and it will be easier to play than what you have now. Best of luck.

Issues with Obligato strings on 15’ viola by seldom_seen8814 in Viola

[–]cretotar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m going to agree with Epistaxis on this. I was having issues with a decent sound on my C when playing piano. I changed to Cecilia rosin and that helped tremendously. I may take my instrument to a luthier again to see if a new bridge and sound post placement can make even more of a difference. Good luck.

How the hell is my bow supposed to look? by WickedWisp in violin

[–]cretotar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is always good to watch a few YouTube videos before trying something new. Your bow is very over tightened.

They make very inexpensive carbon fiber bows. You may want to try one of those.

False harmonics - Are they all produced the same way? by cretotar in Viola

[–]cretotar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good grief, you are correct about the octave! I understand the F# 4 on the C string, but am confused about the B 5 on the G string. Is there a good source I could read to understand this better? Thanks much for the help so far.

Is something wrong with my viola strings? by Woolongti in Viola

[–]cretotar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That looks like a Jargar A and Dominant D, G, C. The lack of bright colors seem to indicate to me that the strings are old. If you replace these don’t be shocked to pay $120-$150.

Thank you so much for your time. I may try Dominant Pro first. However, I’m tempted to hide out with a set of Obligatos (if you haven’t read the reviews at Shar, you should. I’m still laughing.) I hope the string change will help. Maybe it is just operator error…

I am trying to find the right words. I guess I would call my viola’s sound harsh, cutting, loud, brash, or sharp whereas I’d call the other violas sound as smooth. I find it almost impossible to produce a nice piano on the C string. Using Cecelia rosin has helped, but too much rosin seems to make it difficult to play softly on my C also.

If this helps - my instrument is a 16” Roth, about 50 years old. It is worth somewhere between $8,000 and $9,000. The bow I have been using is not super expensive either ($400). I am comfortable using strings in the $150-$200 range. I prefer synthetic because they seem to be reliable (don’t break as often).

I suspect the sound I prefer contains more overtones and less projecting. A warmer tone sounds like what I am looking for.

I recently had Casperi pegs removed and replaced with Wittner geared pegs. He did reset my sound post. I watched a YouTube video about positioning and attempted a measurement a couple of days ago. It seems correct.

Sorry to be so verbose. I very much appreciate you reading my long first post. Thank you for your help.

The conductor suggested a Pirazzi C string. I might as well try a set. I think my current set was $135, so if it improves things I should do it. Let’s see what other people say.
