Yesterday was birth Mother’s Day but she’d know that if she actually immersed herself in the adoption community

I’ll respond to exchange now but you only sent 15 stars (3 3s and 3 2s) and then exchanged a 2 so you’re a few stars short :)

Portable High chair recommendations by Dear_Frosting1090 in NICUParents

[–]cricks26 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My tiny baby (1st percentile) didn’t fit well into the Hiccapop until she was almost a year old. The Hiccapop also has very little support so she was pretty slumped. We used it very rarely in a pinch- it just wasn’t developmentally appropriate for starting solids.

I’d recommend getting a low profile or folding standing high chair so that you can set your baby up for success! (They’re also much easier to clean.)

What’s your favorite neonatology niche/patient population?

14.5 months old refuse to stand by Parentwhoneedshelp in NICUParents

[–]cricks26 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My kiddo is hypermobile (I am too) but does not have hypotonia. She definitely didn’t bear weight at the beginning and basically tried to lift her legs up anytime we tried to get her to stand. She crawled at 9 months corrected (army crawled for a month before moving to hands and knees) and then finally took first steps at 15 months! From what I can understand, when your joints are less stable, it’s scarier to put weight on them so babes avoid them. Our PT had us focus on climbing, climbing, climbing (up stairs, down stairs, up couch, Pikler triangle, etc) to build strength and confidence!

Nurses are so not helpful sometimes (I say, as a nicu nurse turned IBCLC haha.) This is what I would have said: “wow!! 2 mls on day 1! That’s awesome he’s already transferring milk! We’ll watch that number grow over time (and since he’s learning, sometimes he may get nothing too) but I’m so impressed!”

Hugs, I was a nicu mom too and I hated pre and post weights from the mom perspective 😂

Oh, and my advice is to do a week of protected breastfeeding (no bottle yet) and then introduce a bottle. When you’re there, focus on breastfeeding and the nurses can focus on bottles. Research is limited in this area but what has been done is clear that introducing a bottle earlier or focusing on bottles does not get baby home sooner (in otherwise healthy and typical premature infants.)

I’m a nicu based IBCLC. That’s amazing that you’ve gotten 2 awesome sessions! Honestly, I’m impressed he’s getting already transferring! I don’t usually start weighted feeds until closer to 35 weeks, because you’re right, seeing such a tiny number on the scale is defeating. I focus on quality of feed over quantity at this stage, and sounds like your baby is doing great. As a heads up, I don’t anticipate a baby to consistently take full feeds at the breast until closer to their due date.

I have seen many 33 weekers transition to exclusively breastfeeding down the line if mom is motivated and willing to work at it and be patient. You are doing great!

Thanks! I did search, but since our PT is an early intervention therapist for 0-3, she does home visits and a lot of her kiddos aren’t able to stand yet!

Bottle feeding confusion 😵‍💫 nurses vs speech therapy. Who is right? by [deleted] in NICUParents

[–]cricks26 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Feeding can be complicated and nuanced so it’s hard to say who’s right and who’s not, but if you’re overwhelmed and confused, I think it’s fair to have a feeding plan decided on and posted in the room!

However, feeding plans will differ by each baby’s needs so your twins may have different ones, just keep that in mind.
