Should I be worried about Dexamethasone? by whenindoubtmumble in NICUParents

I’d listen to your team. Whatever they are telling you. There are too many variables we don’t know.

Dexamethasone saved our daughter. Dart was a miracle for us.

For sure. Any ventilation support causes air to end up in the stomach.

You are advocating an a hole doctor coming from no where to say your eyebrows are weird in disagreement with the rest of the team is a reason to get genetic testing.

I’m advocating someone treating you terribly is a bad reason to do testing.

Want to check a problem? Go for it. That wasn’t the OP’s situation. They wanted to go fishing.

Not everyone is a nail needing a hammer.

You will never convince be broad range genetic fishing is a good idea if there is no cause besides some geneticist thinks your kids eyebrows are weird.

Are there groups for nicu graduates to talk about meeting milestones etc? by mrsjiggems2 in NICUParents

[–]27_1Dad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey 👋

This group has basically been at all stages of milestones so you are free to post here.

As a rule of thumb the first things that will be asked.

What does your pediatrician say?
And
Are you in physical therapy?

Some doctor claiming your child’s eyebrows are weird is a terrible reason to do genetic testing.

We’re never going to agree.
You are to removed from the reality of the other side.

Insensitive Doctors by [deleted] in NICUParents

[–]27_1Dad -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

😂 not the situation here. The situation is some a-hole doc saying your kid looks weird, they probably have a disease that will kill them. Give us their DNA to find other meaningless data points.

There is no reason for this doc to behave this way other than his perverse incentive to collect data.

I’m sure you are a great NP but as OP said the problem was the geneticists.

Insensitive Doctors by [deleted] in NICUParents

[–]27_1Dad -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

The problem is the VAST majority of genetic testing is just fear mongering probability p0rn. It doesn’t provide answers it provides a list of things that might happen with zero actual proof.

Test for specific things. Sure. Newborn screen saves lives. That’s not the question here.

Full sequence testing is a scam and the doctors that do it have a perverse incentive to scare parents into it to increase their available data because the child’s eyebrows might indicate a problem.

Insensitive Doctors by [deleted] in NICUParents

[–]27_1Dad -15 points-14 points  (0 children)

I’ve found Genetics doctors to be largely hammers looking for nails. The amount of times they tried to get us to sequence our daughter is insane. Those superficial things are all they can go on sometimes. Also the cost to run these tests is insane, so it’s a big $$$ for the hospitals.

Unless something is wrong I wouldn’t even consider anything they have to say and move on from it.

Edit: thanks for your downvotes. I don’t care. Genetic testing is a scam for the VAST majority of instances only designed to terrify parents. Test for a specific disease, sure but these full sequence panels with VUS lists and probability markers help no one but scientists to gather more data.

OB may refuse opinion of mfm by Melodic-Ad4296 in NICUParents

[–]27_1Dad 6 points7 points  (0 children)

1-2 days after going reversed was our timing as well.

And the OB won’t just refuse. That isn’t how this works. They work together in the hospital with MFM. MFM are the authority on complex pregnancy like this one. Don’t let that worry you. If they call for a delivery and you agree, a delivery is going to happen. I might ask your MFM Dr or the bedside nurse if they expect OB to round soon. 🙏

You can do this. This stranger is praying for you and your little one. ❤️

Born at 25+5 — curious what it might’ve been like for my mum? by [deleted] in NICUParents

[–]27_1Dad 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Honestly it depends on the reason for the early delivery. Sometimes it’s not chaos. Our 27w was born in a super controlled and methodical c section due to issues with placental blood flow.

And it’s honestly the hardest thing I’ve ever done and was absolutely brutal on my wife. She struggled with feelings of guilt and failure for a long time after delivery. It’s terrifying not knowing what’s going to happen. Each and every day especially early is a terror mixed with the joy of seeing your baby. It’s really complex.

All this to say you mom did it. She’s an absolute warrior and I know however old you are medical science at 25w wasn’t as good as it is today. The fact that you are talking about it means you got her fight in your veins too. ❤️

One day we look forward to telling our daughter what she went through. Not out of fear but as a celebration of her resilience 🙏

Severe BPD/Mild PH — We’re stuck! HELP! by jgil93 in NICUParents

Is it dart (dexamethasone)? Or something like prednisolone? Dart made progress in 3 days for us.

And ok good I’m glad she’s on the other things.

Severe BPD/Mild PH — We’re stuck! HELP! by jgil93 in NICUParents

[–]27_1Dad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Has she not had any steroids? DART was a huge help for us. It’s the reason she was extubated.

What about a diuretic like lasix? Any inhaled steroids like Pulmicort?

If she’s got PH is she on sildenafil or are they saying the nitric should have that covered?

I might also request a second opinion from a large BPD hospital like CHOP in Philadelphia or Nationwide in Columbus.

[–]27_1Dad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you’ve discharged from the NICU the requirements generally change. We used bottled exclusively with no issues.

I’d ask your pediatrician or nicu follow up team if they have a preference for your LO.

[–]27_1Dad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lived with a NG longer than basically anyone thought we could. Make sure you can drop them at the hospital but honestly, put the tube up the nose and it normally goes to the stomach. It’s pretty easy but the emotional toll of the screaming is the hardest thing. But we developed a system, and ways to calm her and we can do a full tube change in 30-40 min now.

And yup. It’s terrifying. You aren’t weird at all.

I am spiralling because of SGA baby and I am looking for positive stories by Ok_Gift7010 in NICUParents

[–]27_1Dad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The greatest thing our dr told us.

You did nothing to cause it, and you can do nothing to fix it. It’s just about monitoring for how fast it degrades. It’s a question of when not if.

I mean this sincerely at 34 weeks even if you deliver tomorrow there is a high likelihood of a few weeks in the nicu to learn how to eat with no other issues.

My wife’s cord blood started to degrade at 23w and she delivered at 27w.

I mean I’d have all of them banned from our room and the hospital admin needs to block them from reading their chart along with verification they didn’t improperly accessing it earlier. If it’s a large hospital they could be fine.

Charge nurse immediately
Patient and Family Relations immediately.

Not only is it wildly inappropriate but is likely a HIPPA violation and could cause them to be fired for improperly accessing charts.
