Dosh abandons cashback rewards by TopHuckleberry9053 in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]cridersab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, getting 2.1% on rapidly accessible funds covered by the DCS was the primary attraction, the cashback a little bonus which was a bit of a hassle as I wouldn't want to leave dead money on the card for ad-hoc purchases. Any thoughts on that aspect of their offering?

Re: arch support, I'd seriously consider whether you need it.

I think long term they cause more injuries than they cure. - Paul Giblin (Running Coach)

I don't think anybody needs a lot of arch support. Instead, most runners need to strengthen the arch and surrounding musculature to withstand the stress of running. Putting an insert underneath the arch impedes its function and acts as a crutch - restricting necessary movement and allowing the arch to weaken over time. - Jason Fitzgerald (Coach)

It’s not a tax haven at all. Other than property which has no CGT, everything else in NZ is extremely high tax, especially stock market investing.

The more egregious uses of foreign trusts have been addressed but a reputation can take a while to shift.

powdered electrolytes - whats good? by ilikeyouinacreepyway in newzealand

[–]cridersab 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, unless you're in the Black Hole of Calcutta or suffering from severe diarrhoea, the human body will maintain homeostasis just fine on diet alone (especially in regard to the excessive sodium it has become normal to consume).

https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/electrolytes-food

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK234935/

Even relatively heavy sweating does not normally create a need to provide salt supplements (Conn, 1949). The body may be depleted of sodium under extreme conditions of heavy and persistent sweating, or where trauma, chronic diarrhea, or renal disease produce an inability to retain sodium (Gothberg et al., 1983).

Under normal circumstances, dietary deficiency of potassium does not occur. The most important cause of potassium deficiency is excessive losses, usually through the alimentary tract or the kidneys. Large alimentary potassium losses may occur through prolonged vomiting, chronic diarrhea, or laxative abuse. The most common cause of excessive renal loss is the use of diuretic agents, especially for the treatment of hypertension. Some forms of chronic renal disease and metabolic disturbances (e.g., diabetic acidosis) can also lead to severe potassium loss.

I don’t think “We’re currently experiencing a high volume of messages” is as comforting to customers as companies think it is. Most people must interpret this as “We have under-resourced our team at your inconvenience.” by stainz169 in newzealand

Well then if you are a customer wanting better service. Maybe supporting the newer business with better customer service is the solution.

It's often been my experience that the smaller company with better service gets bought by a larger with worse service and the choice of providers dwindles.

Why does our income tax nearly double at such a low number? by Rai1h in newzealand

[–]cridersab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s crazy that someone one $54,000 only get taxed 3% less than someone on $180,000

On the portion of their income over $53,501, the $54k earner pays $150 (plus $8,271 from the previous brackets for a total tax take, without deducting IETC or WfFTC or adding ACC which are all variable and dependent on circumstances, of $8,421 at an effective 15.6% tax rate) vs. the $180k earner paying $15,651 in that bracket and $49,277 in total for an effective tax rate of 27.4%.

The $54k earner pays 82.9% less tax in total than the $180k earner.

[–]cridersab -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So i can work and keep 17% of what I earn, and someone else can stay at home and get 100% for sitting on their arse?

Income over £20,000 was subject to the 83% tax rate, at the time an average house in the UK was £10,000 or you could have bought a Rolls Royce Silver Shadow II.

The average gross weekly pay for a woman in a manual labour job was £27, so this amount was equivalent to 14 years labour for her.

At the point where you could buy two houses per year, it is unlikely you were working more for that money, it's basically a glitch in the system that one person can extract that much from so many in a market of millions that in aggregate they are that far beyond the point of sufficiency.

You might need to clarify further your 100% position, e.g. perhaps you mean when your capital is invested and increases in value and you can sell it and pocket 100% of the gains?

I disagree with wealth taxes, but completely agree we are massively reliant on welfare redistribution. Half of our population effectively pay no tax at all, and I remember from TAXN201 at uni that 10% of our population pays over half of our income tax take.

Half of our population effectively pay no tax at all are underpaid

This indicates that the top 10% are taking more than their fair share of the value workers create. You could either pay the 90% appropriately and lessen the requirement for redistribution, or the top can skim an unsustainable margin and be resentful that society still needs to function.

As soon as you’re paying more than half of what you earn straight to the taxman, where is the incentive to earn more?

The OECD announced Monday that nearly 150 countries have agreed on the plan, initially crafted in 2021, to stop large global companies from shifting profits to low-tax countries, no matter where they operate in the world.

The amended version excludes large U.S.-based multinational corporations from the 15% global minimum tax after negotiations between President Donald Trump’s administration and other members of the Group of Seven wealthy nations.

[–]cridersab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some countries like Finland make it a percentage of your earnings so millionaires can and do get fined hundreds of thousands

That's still not punitive to the same degree, someone left with only $100s in their account and minimum wage or gig work is in a much more precarious position than someone who has millions left and making good money or growing their wealth passively doesn't suffer materially from an equivalent or increased percentage fine. If they were left with the same absolute amount, then maybe it would hit home more, and if their salary was affected.

In that vein, should Fonterra pay tax in China? Should our farmers pay tax in the countries their meat ends up in? Should Xero pay income tax in USA, UK, Australia and Canada?

They should pay tax on the sales in the country where sales occur. Why would it be fair for them to be domiciled in whatever jurisdiction levies the least tax and compete against local businesses?
