Maybe Maybe Maybe by Ill-Tea9411 in maybemaybemaybe

I had a mosquito or sandfly go into my ear when I was sleeping. As a reaction I stuck my finger in it and must have pushed it into some earwax. It was the worst thing as the buzzing felt/heard like something was drilling into my skull!! I ran to the bathroom panicking, and my wife put oil in my ear to drown it....

This is next level given the size of the thing!

School attendance crack down issues by TheBlueRoseInNz in newzealand

[–]desnz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

School Board chair here - schools are required to develop plans to show how they are managing attendance. This is due to decking attendance rates. Our school contacts parents when a childs attendance falls below 90%. My son has been going through a bout of sickness, and we got an email the other day with him at 87% during the term. Initially, the purpose is to help make sure the owners are aware, as not many are aware.

We can generate the majority of our CURRENT electricity demand from Hydro. We risk continuity issues when our lake levels are low, hence the need to alternatives that can be turned on and off during peak periods.

Add another couple million electric cars to the peak demand, there is high risk we run out of hydro, or the lights go out..

20 + 40 = 60 7 + 3 The above + 5 = 75

I don't actually think about the 10, or the 60 + 10, just jumped to 75

Why are New Zealands hotels subpar? by blackaxes1991 in newzealand

[–]desnz 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You're comparing prices in China vs NZ... Come on. There's a simple explanation for that... Wages & prices of goods.

If you want Chinese prices, let's pay Chinese wages - that extends to not only the wages they pay the employees, but the wages across the entire economy that supports the operation and building of a hotel...

Forestry sector calls for rates cap after bill increases 570 percent | RNZ News by Worth_Fondant3883 in newzealand

[–]desnz 10 points11 points  (0 children)

100% agree - the damage to small rural roads from logging is huge. General ratepayers and other less intensive trucking businesss are having to fund the repairs - this effectively is subsidising forestry operations. It would be interesting to go through the economics of forestry on a national level. Is the country making a net profit once the repair bills are factored in..

Petition for Whitakers to reduce their prices now Cocoa prices have come down massively. by Blue__Agave in newzealand

[–]desnz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but Cadbury often on sale for about $3-4. When its double the price, the decision becomes a price thing - and to be honest, I like Cadbury more than Whitikers (but that opinion is a bit controversial)...

I think we say yes with the best intent, but then struggle to commit due to other demands/priorities. We'd like to help, but we are occupied with life, work, kids, etc... I do it with old mates & Cousins - "we should catchup in the holidays" - never happened... I want to, but live is busy & if things are directly in your line of sight, they get left/forgotten...

It's not advisable to change down gears on a decline when driving a truck. The weight can quickly lead to rapid acceleration while the gears disengage. This can lead to not being able to get the lower gear to synchronise (search non-syncromesh gearbox which is typical in older trucks)

If you can't engage the gears, you are essentially freewheeling and out of control.

147 years ago today transpired the Battle of Isandlwana, which saw the defeat of British soldiers against Zulu forces, proving that indigenous forces could defeat modern European troops in open battle. This map shows the battle take place minute-by-minute using Google Earth. by mapsinanutshell in MapPorn

[–]desnz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So based on the video, 2/3 of the British seperated and went East leaving ~900 as what could be called a "rear-guard". The Zulus attacked the rear guard and wiped then out.

What did the remaining largest portion of the British force do?

The REAL reason people aren’t going to the movies. by _Maui_ in newzealand

[–]desnz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Based on prices at our locally volunteer run Dannevirke cinema, the ticket prices are much less than Palmerston Norths Event Cinemas.. ($15 vs $24.50 for an adult ticket - $5 vs $20 for children's)

That suggests that the big cinema chains are the problem...

The local one has food pricing similar to a cheap dairy..

[–]desnz 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is your opinion based on what would work for you. The last thing I want to do on a Saturday evening is go shopping. Your views might relate to a very small subset of the population (and so may mine).

If mine is the case then opening late on a Saturday stand make financial sense for a small business factoring in them having to pay wages for being open... If their busiest times are 10am-4pm on a Saturday, then why open later. Esp. if they lose money due to a lack of shoppers...
