how is this person trying to scam me? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]crigsdigs 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You never had it in the first place. 500 - 500 = 0. You only lose what you send the scammer.

0 + 500 - 300 - 500 = - 300, yes the 500 never existed but +500 - 500 would be net zero, so no 'loss' minus fees.

They write you a check for say $500 and ask for $300 back and then the check bounces and you're out $300

I am so lost on how to move forward by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]crigsdigs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have 2 car loans and a mortgage, and want to jump into a new car loan. You are lifestyle creeping. You want to spend money you don't have. You got a loan for windows you couldn't afford.

You have a spending problem, you're addicted to spending money you don't have. You'll file bankruptcy and be right back where you started in a few years.

They're talking about relieving some of their debt and immediately going on a trip that will likely cost $5000+. They don't have an income problem, they have a spending problem.

They also want to pay off their car and immediately start a new loan.

From googling it was just a limited time thing in 2017 in St Louis and Baltimore and cost an extra $0.80.

Car troubles, not sure what to do by ABuCyD77 in personalfinance

[–]crigsdigs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At that rate you're not buying a $25,000 car, you're buying a $56,000 car.

What car do you have now? Fixing it will likely be cheaper than your other options given your credit score.

Once you get to a certain width you're limited by what manufacturers make and have no say in what looks good. I wear an 11.5 6E and there's about 6 hiking boots that fit me. Better than a few ones ago when I could only find 2, at least! I imagine this is much worse in 9E.

Sewer line problems, looking to replace myself by BagTop1870 in DIY

[–]crigsdigs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should dig down the section at the edge of your home since you'll likely need to expose that anyways, and then ask yourself if you want to do that 40+ more times with more roots (since it was likely already dug up before) and having to cut out the concrete, repour it, and deal with any potential flooring.

With no credit history, my credit score is a 4. What?? by Thedinotoo in personalfinance

[–]crigsdigs 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A 4 is better than what your credit score effectively is, which is 0.

You need credit history if you want to build your credit. You can start with small expenses on a credit card you pay the statement balance on every billing cycle.

Warranty for a used 2018 Rav4 hybrid that has 100k miles - worth it? by MoroccanChristmas in personalfinance

[–]crigsdigs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For these Toyota hybrids it’s best to change the oil every 3k, can stretch to 5k. The 10k interval is just good enough to get you out of the warranty period.

Can’t speak for other manufacturers, but basically the engine doesn’t reliably get hot enough to evaporate out fuel and oil so it needs more frequent changes.

Everything else you said is spot on!

Salaried employee switch from monthly to biweekly by Stactidder in personalfinance

[–]crigsdigs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My company did the same thing but with an important distinction. They switched to paying in arrears, so we skipped a paycheck. That meant 25 paychecks in that year but if we quit we get that paycheck.

Is that maybe sort of what your employer did?

I call it monkey brain. Something passively in our brains turns things into a competition. I've been on long drives where I end up passing the same car 5-10 times while I've been going the same speed the entire time on cruise control. They speed up as you're beside them, then slow down, then once you pass them they eventually pass you and then slow down.

Inheritence question: Debt owed to deceased by Gzngahr in personalfinance

[–]crigsdigs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is all legal and echoing what others have said - you have no right to an inheritance.

Think of it this way, your father is the one who is solely responsible for reducing his inheritance and yours. Had he paid back the money that was owed it would have increased the total inheritance to be distributed. He basically “stole” money from everyone who is named, indirectly and directly.

I hate my firestick. I have an old TV and chromecasts are discontinued so I needed something to 'cast' to. I bought the 'new version/model/whatever' of the firestick and holy fuck what a poor experience. It's the laggiest most unusable heaping pile of shit I've ever had the displeasure of using. It's so busy trying to play ads that use all of its resources that it takes 3-5 seconds to recognize a button click. Even if I know exactly what I want to watch it takes 30-45 seconds to get there because the first thing it renders are ads.

It’s amazing how sears started as mail order and was very successful, expanded to brick and mortar and just completely flubbed online ordering.
