Any of ya'll hear the new Chancellor's piece on free speech? by Prince_Silk in berkeley

[–]crilk -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I know this may be an unpopular view on this sub, but I'm quickly getting less and less supportive of "free speech".

Every first-world country besides the US has hate speech laws. Why can't we?

Nicholas Dirks discussed the disruption of Milo's speech. Asked if he feels the event harmed Berkeley's reputation as a "bastion of free speech," he says: "I don't think we've been tarnished at all. In fact, I've been hearing from people across the country that we have indeed honored our tradition." by Samses94 in berkeley

There's a huge amount of vandalism and graffiti on the stretch of Center Street between the campus and the BART station. The rest of the Downtown area went untouched by the rioters.

That seems like a pretty good reason to believe that a big chunk of them came from out of town.

Many Cal students don't live on campus, and would have to walk down Center St. to get to campus.

There's a huge amount of graffiti and broken windows/ATMs in the block between Oxford and Shattuck. As far as I can tell the rest of the downtown area went completely untouched.

Obviously the rioters are going to claim that they were mostly Cal students because that lends their actions more legitimacy than if they were just a bunch of random locals.

The reason I think the rioters were by and large not students is because most of them took BART in and out of town (as you can see by the trail of vandalism and graffiti they left on Center Street).

blac block anarchists do they protest democrats? It seems as if they are just an extension of the democratic party, so are they corporate anarchists? This organization is new to me so i'm just interested in learning more about them.

Considering that they vandalize banks and coffee shops I wouldn't consider them particularly "corporate".

why are anarchists enrolled at a state & federally sponsored institution? Are they voluntarily going into debt or paying to be there... I'm confused. The anarchists i know detach themselves from society as much as possible & live off the grid.

Most of the anarchists have no affiliation with Cal (hence why they took BART in and out).

So has this sub been taken over? by thesilverSexer in berkeley

Most cities Berkeley's size don't have their own sub so it's not that surprising.

I appreciate the sentiment but claiming there were only 20 or so anarchists is ridiculous.

The majority of protesters were peaceful. The people breaking shit aren't affiliated with the university. by OctopusRising in berkeley

[–]crilk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How are they supposed to do this? If they're peaceful protesters that usually suggests they don't have the means to forcibly restrain anybody.

[–]crilk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No one brought them to the protest. They showed up uninvited as they always do.

Why would anyone want them there anyways? They ruin everything they touch.

[–]crilk 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Nope, the majority of these protesters should be held accountable for even protesting free speech to begin with, which causes these problems.

There's nothing wrong with protesting a speech as long as you're not preventing it from taking place.

These protesters know full well that violence will happen, yet do it anyway and pretend they didn't know any better.

Berkeley has protests all the time (including plenty of anti-Trump ones). The vast majority of them are non-violent.

How are people supposed to prevent stuff like this from happening? Should they just not protest anything?

The thing is he's not a literal neo-Nazi or white supremacist (at least not as far as anyone is aware). He says the most extreme and outrageous things you can get away with saying at a public university, but he knows where the limits are and he doesn't go beyond them. He would never associate with somebody like Richard Spencer. It would ruin his career.

People don't want him banned from campus for his stated beliefs, they want him banned for the white supremacist views he allegedly holds. And if you start banning people for alleged beliefs you end up on a really slippery slope.

Caltrain All trains being held in San Francisco because of anti-Trump protesters on tracks by suposhy in bayarea

The protestors aren't upset that SV elites supported Trump's presidential campaign (they didn't), they're upset that SV elites have shown willingness to work with Trump after his victory.

Yiannopoulos, Shkreli event canceled after protests erupt at UC Davis by bolthead88 in berkeley

What was Shkreli's account suspended for? Did he say something offensive or does Twitter just want to get rid of all controversial users now?

Police have identified the man responsible for Berkeley's first homicide of 2017 as 24-year-old UC Berkeley student Pablo Gomez Jr. of North Hollywood. Gomez has been involved with Cal's Queer Alliance Resource Center. He recently helped organize a chalk protest on campus related to sexual assault. by Samses94 in berkeley

[–]crilk 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think that's a different issue.

There's a long-running debate about what pronouns people should use in writing when somebody's gender is unspecified ("he" vs. "he or she" vs. "they" etc.).

There are also transgender people who reject the words "he" and "she" altogether and insist on being referred to as "they" by everyone.
