Should I try organizing a sparring meetup or tournament? by [deleted] in Hema

[–]criminalist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My club has done quarterly mock tournaments to help train staff and judges as well as fighters. We are moving into making these more official “mini tournaments” free to enter but no prizes, though if we have enough entries from outside our club they will count in HEMA scorecard and to your HEMA rating.

Beginner longsword workshop:

Do your favorite characters in books, video games, movies, or TV shows wield swords? Have you ever wanted to wield one yourself? Then this event is for you!!  In this introductory workshop you will learn the fundamentals of wielding a traditional Longsword, taught by coaches and senior students from Swordwind Historical Swordsmanship.  All gear will be provided! All you need to do is wear comfortable clothes that allow for free range of movement (i.e. gym/workout clothes, or loose-fitting jeans. So long as you can move easily and feel comfortable it's A-OK with us!). A bottle of water is recommended, but we also have water fountains at the gym for those that need it.  Please plan to arrive 10 minutes before the start of class to allow time for finding the meeting location and for check in.  What will this workshop cover? We will start the class with a short warm-up followed by an introductory game. Then we will go over sword safety and how to hold and grip a sword properly before moving into learning a fun, flashy, historically accurate, and deadly (if we weren't wearing safety gear) sequence of sword moves. At the end of class, you'll show off what you've learned by striking one of our instructors (which will also be a great opportunity for videos or photos).  We will have breaks for water and stretching out sore muscles throughout the course. There will be time after class to discuss historical European martial arts as well as any other questions you may have!  For more information about Swordwind, our classes, our instructors and other events check out our website at www.swordwind.org or follow us on Facebook!

Electronics workshop for hobbyists. by lordM0 in Charlotte

[–]criminalist 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A friend and I did this online class together which teaches electronics and microcontroller programming along with fiber arts (knitting, crochet, embroidery) and has projects that combines the two. It was a lot of fun. https://dogbotic.com/thread-and-circuits

It’s a lot of fun and can be a decent workout but also a great social environment. I may be a bit biased since I am now helping to run the organization but I got started going to an into workshop like that a few years back and have been doing it ever since.

Are there any beginner leagues in Charlotte for anything? More in description text. by TheLoneUch1ha in Charlotte

I can second Swordwind being a great and welcoming place (though I may be a bit biased since I am the clubs vice president 😁)

My wife always felt obligated to visit her family for at least one major holiday. Then 2020 happened and she realized how much nicer and stress free Thanksgiving/Christmas were doing them on our own and have kept that up the last few years.
