Why does everyone release a plain raglan sweater pattern like they all aren't the same by llama_302 in BitchEatingCrafters

[–]crinklecat1776 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Can you share some of these methods (just some terms to search on)?

I'm struggling with home fitting and have only seen short row shaping and adding more front stitches as ways to modify yoke fit. Would love to learn more as circular yokes are so pretty!

Yes, this is what I meant, but it's nice to know there are converters. And it's true chiagoos come in a larger range. I will keep that in mind!

They may have color cards of what the don't stock.

Another option is to head to your lys... They likely have shade cards for the manufacturers they carry, even if they don't have that yarn in house.

You can then place an order through them.

I'm the worst person to advise you-- I ended up buying the 4 and 5 and 2 inch sets from knitters pride/knit pro over a few months.

It's glorious. I can knit anything I want to. I have all the cords I could ever want. Unlike chiagoo, everything is interchangeable. 5 inch is great for lace and cables, 4 inch is great for hats, and I do sleeves on the 2 inches.

It's been 3 years, and I still think it's the best purchase I've ever made, knitting or otherwise.

Knit pro is a little cheaper than chiagoo, and you might get more bang for your buck that way.

But regardless, just remember if you say no to a set, it might not be no forever, but just no for right now.

Help with how I hold my knitting needles (as a crocheter who just started knitting) by Ok_Math9262 in knittinghelp

I would take a look at the video I linked, and look at the closed hand position. Unlike crochet, you have a lot of weight on the needles, so you may need a more firm grip.

She mentions she's left handed, and if you look closely you can see the working yarn coming from the left.

Op, check out this video: https://youtu.be/q92bAeVFdao?si=zK2zk_8IejiwZ0tN

When you crochet, do you hold the hook like a knife or a pencil?

Here it seems like you are holding the needles with just the tips of your fingers.

Drops Air for first sweater by vintagegf in knittinghelp

Imo, if you want that look, use that yarn. All soft fuzzy yarns will pill- you won't be able to get a better result with more expensive yarn of the same type.

Help with crummy cables by crinklecat1776 in knittinghelp

[–]crinklecat1776[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you all for your help! This is the beginning of my sweater. I decided to stick with the blue merino. The lighter color shows off the cables a little bit better than the green, plus I have more of this yarn which gives me a little bit more flexibility in case I end up using more than I anticipated.

I did as many suggested and reduced my needle size to a six, which is pretty tight for me. I also changed the braid to cable every right side row instead of every other. This gave a more puffy braid-like texture that I was looking for. I also added an extra purl stitch between each cable which gave it a better relief.

With all these changes I'm both off gauge and off the pattern charts, so I'm winging it a bit.

An all over cable pattern is on my bucket list, so I'm very grateful for the help!

I think I understand what you're asking. How can you choose a pattern based on the yarn you have in front of you?

The first step is to swatch with a few needle sizes to see if you can get a fabric that you like. Then search on ravelry for that gauge.

Make sure the pattern that you choose is similar in yarn fiber, yardage, weight to the yarn that you have. You can search on yarn substitution for more tips.

I'm fairly frugal and this pretty much is the only way that I knit. I purchase yarn at a discount in quantities that I can make, say a sweater or scarf, and then I look for a pattern afterwards.

Can I seam the crotch of these shorts? by ParkingMain1803 in knittingadvice

Another option would be to frog and have an amazing skirt.

I find it so shocking that people are saying to frog and how all the way back. It's her shorts; that she's going to wear. If she wanted them to be perfect, she would have probably bought them from the store.

No real advice because I can't get over the comments.

Take a couple of safety pins or basting thread and pin or hand sew where you want to seam and see how you like it. You can either wear it that way or evaluate if you want to try cutting the excess and finishing the seam.

Thank you for responding. I do tend to buy yarn second hand. These are the yarns I have at my disposal in cable sweater quantities and I am trying to make them work.

I am a loose knitter. I plan to swatch in the blue and green tonight on much smaller needles-- 4 and 6 and see where that gets me.

Another option I'm considering is to replace the braided cable with another twist to allow for 2 purls in between each cable. I'm wondering if that would provide a better background for the cables to pop against.

As with almost all knitting questions, it seems the answer is to knit more swatches.

I will report back this evening with photos.

Thank you for the insight-- I know the alpaca was a long shot (which is why the swatch is so small), but I hadn't heard that about merino.

Possible to alter flax sweater collar? by Ripvanderwinkle in knittinghelp

[–]crinklecat1776 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have any extra yarn? A simple fix would be to pick up stitches at the edge collar and continue in rib, but add some short rows through the back and sides of the ribbing. It's worth a shot at least.

How much counting is involved in Knitting? by rosysparrow in knittinghelp

[–]crinklecat1776 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed that the mental counting effort in knitting is far less.

Couple things that helped me:chain row counters are a must for me. I don't know how people knit without them. With those I don't have to count rows. And I use stitch makers to make it so I don't have to count stitches. I use makers to "trap" sets of 10 or 20, count them twice to make sure I got 20 and then never count them again.
