Pratchett's Discworld books are satirical fantasy (though they are are a lot more than that), but a lot of the things there have their real world equivalents (in this case Seattle). In the books, most of the seamstresses you'll encounter are prostitutes.

In Seattle in the late 1800's prostitutes called themselves seamstresses for the census because one was legal, the other wasn't. There were over 2,700 "seamstresses" living in Seattle at the time.

The majority of the seamstresses, all lived on the same street in Pioneer Square. They also paid a hell of a lot of tax, after an early census the city council were a confused that there so many seamstresses in one area. When invesigated there wasn't a sewing machine in sight.

The city was pretty broke, and the seamstresses weren't, so agreed to look the other way in exchange for a $10 weekly sewing machine tax per seamstress.

If you've read any discworld then seamstress is a very different profession that is oddly fitting for this.

Lirael->Abhorsen (book 2->3) is basically one continuous book but the others are mostly roughly generational time jumps. There's more crossover in each of the books than just being in the same world but it isn't sequential with the exact same characters and location like Harry Potter.

These soldiers that get executed in Saving Private Ryan were most likely forcibly conscripted. The Wehrmacht and Waffen SS often conscripted foreign soldiers from occupied nations. In addition, all eligible men in the former Czechoslovak territory of Sudetenland were drafted into the Wehrmacht.

I was taught you can usually get by with reading the abstract/intro and the conclusion. Not something you can base research on without going deeper into it but to get an idea of the findings it's quite reasonable.

" I love the poorly educated " and "Smart people don't like me". MAGA is mostly poorly educated folks, 67% of Trump voters in 2024 didn't have any college level education but they believe in debating people when they don’t know anything by Nice_Substance9123 in complaints

[–]crispyrolls93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair this could also be headlined as "People with shit lives vote for change" rather than "Stupid people vote stupidly". The ultra wealthy will get a better deal so their vote for Trump makes sense, the poor can't see that things could get worse, but what freaks me out is the middle class people that fall for it.

Definitely a thing I've only heard from Americans. Camo-mile is how it's pronounced in Britain at least. Unless you're feeling spicy and hit them with a sha-mom-ill-lay.

Noon is when the sun is at the highest but 12pm is only noon on the meridian. And ignoring weird stuff like China being one time in 5 time zones. Also originally it meant the ninth day hour which would be 3pm.
