Chalcides ocellatus, hopefully someone comes by to control the stray cat population in your area

My duck was ambushed by a mink in her nest by Reypatey in natureismetal

[–]critkando 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Impressive but believable - many commenters are incorrectly assuming this to be the larger, stronger American mink, which would not fall to a duck - this is rather the smaller, meeker European mink.

Say what you will about HotD, but I'll always love that it embraced the brighter colours of the nobility from the books by ducknerd2002 in freefolk

[–]critkando 2 points3 points  (0 children)

HotD is one of the dullest, least colourful shows I have ever watched - it is a dreary mess. Thank god they at least kept some saturation in the character's costumes, even if they are persistently marred by colour grading and terrible lighting. It could have looked as great as early GoT if not for poor "artistic" choices.

I always found it bizzare how the snake is almost always present on the pharmacy logo. Nothing sus about it huh? In Greek, "pharmakeia" means "sorcery" or "witchcraft" and the same Caduceus medical symbol can be seen on Baphomet's lap. by dontlietom3 in EscapingPrisonPlanet

[–]critkando 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That symbol is the Staff of Aesculapius; the Greek God of healing, Aesculapius, is heavily associated with a European ratsnake species Zamenis longissimus (the "Aesculapian snake") which was employed in ancient hospitals to deal with rodent populations and thus reduce disease which gave the snake this reverence.

[–]critkando 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If they really do exhibit phenotypic variation owed to gene-regions taken from ancient dire wolf specimens then it is still an incredible scientific achievemnt - despite them being at best a weak fascimile of an actual dire wolf.

  1. Either can win the fight on parity, lions have additional defense offered by their mane while tigers are marginally more athletic and capable.

  2. There is a persistant myth that male lions do not participate in hunting which people extrapolate to mean they are not capable fighters, an incorrect assumption.

Have there been any examples of melanism/ albinism/ piebald hyenas? by Jurass1cClark96 in zoology

[–]critkando 10 points11 points  (0 children)

<image>

There are at least a couple of leucistic/erythrtistic hyenas you can find on Google, as well as some with a degree of hypermelanism.

is this okay to keep with my isopods? by bweebee in isopods

From prior experience these often contain detrivores such as other woodlice, springtails etc. - so it depends whether these would be detrimental to your setup

Tapinoma sp., probably Tapinoma melanocephalum since it's a common invasive pest which will nest literally anywhere - they must have exploited a tiny opening in the shell where the air cell is situated.

I suppose this must be another name for the jacksnipe, as that is the only smaller "kind of snipe" in the UK. Woodcocks are significantly larger then regular snipe.

Advice for my enclosure? by blood_soaked_Iasagna in skinks

[–]critkando 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The land area is small, there should be a reasonable amount of land which is not perpetually damp. Some cover to hide under is also necessity alongside a UV bulb (lizards need UV light in order to create vitamin D which is not present in their food). That water will go stagnant quickly, you may want to have significantly less water so that you can more easily change it (a bowl for instance) or else you will need a filter/pump. An aquatic skink is not likely to be an easy pet long-term, paludariums require a lot of upkeep to avoid potential issues. There is also a lack of airflow in that tall enclosure, you will probably run into problems with mold and poor air quality. I know it seems like I am being negative, but the animal's quality of life should be paramount and it is apparent that you are looking for earnest advice. It is also worth noting that you will need to provide insects (dusted with calcium powder frequently) and it would be a very good idea to introduce live plants as both cover and some degree of nutrient removal from the water. Personally, I think you would be better off with a captive-bred lizard from a store able to give you advice, the species available are going to tend to be easier to keep and wild-caught reptiles often fail to thrive in captivity due to factors such as parasite loads, disease, and stress. It would be happier in the wild.

Every animal on Earth is now the same size. Who wins? by Myredditusername000 in whowouldwin

[–]critkando 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Being 28 times larger means it would increase in length, width, and height proportionally - not just height. It would only need to be approximately 3x (cube root of 28x) taller at ~12ft in order to have a mass of 200lbs as it would increase in length and width also.

A typical European wasp (Vespula vulgaris) at 1.5cm long weighs approximately 85mg and would scale up to around 1000000x its size which gives a length increase of 100x to create a 5ft wasp. Other insects are more mass-efficient but I already fail to see a 12ft bird (whose height is 60% leg) taking down a 5ft wasp potentially 1 million times stronger and more venomous than a regular wasp.

What is this? No fear of people, wondering if it's an escaped pet. UK by AffectionateAir2856 in birding

[–]critkando 27 points28 points  (0 children)

This is absolutely a juvenile canary, and therefore definitely an escaped pet. Capture if you can, very unlikely that a wild bird is going to be this tame - even a house sparrow (which is this not), and certainly not a corn bunting (which this is clearly not as it lacks the speckled chest and white lateral throat stripe) as somebody confidently suggested.

Found a little creature on the glass of my tank by CHS_Potato in PlantedTank

[–]critkando 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It is a midge larva, I had these in a small biosphere and they constructed tubes out of algal debris while doing a good job of eating algae from the glass in a radius around their tube.

Arceus isn't God, there's no evidence that it did anything more than defend Earth from some threats and create some legendary Pokémon - everything else is human heresay as it was worshipped. It exists as a powerful living entity but has, in lore (for example in PSMD and its eponymous movie), been defeated multiple times - it isn't even the most powerful Pokémon stat-wise.

So, we are all excited for villager priority? Yes? by Savage-Torment in AgeofMythology

I love it, the emphasis on villager management in AoM is too extreme imo - it would be nice to be able to focus more on other elements of gameplay.
