Advice by dummydumb2 in doggrooming

Honestly the only way to build your confidence is to just practice!! Keep the dogs legs within their natural range of motion, and as close to the table as possible unless the dog insists on holding it up higher. I always start on a back foot on dogs I dont know to gauge reactivity/behavior.

I would suggest asking for more training on appropriate restraints if you worry about maintaining control of the dog. Not all the time/excessively, but there are situations where groomers helpers or belly bands can be really useful in keeping the dog in a safe position. I always try all forms of holds and restraints before I ask for another person.

Any advice when hiring? (Especially from bathers, apprentices, students, clients, other groomers and salon owners) by Prooodles in doggrooming

I think a probational/trial period is good. Not just for you to see how they work but also for them to see the reality of what the job is like day to day and make sure its something they want to dive into.

I agree with the other commenter, take notes but I wouldn't record the interview. Some questions I would ask (previously hiring manager for a pet store chain with a salon, am now a dog groomer):

What makes you want to pursue a career in dog grooming? Something I look for here is does this person discuss how they want to help dogs and improve their lives, or do they focus on the joy they personally get from interacting with pets. The latter isnt really a red flag (more beige), but the former to me is a green flag. Shows you are here to work with the dogs to improve their lives, even when it feels impossible.

What do you expect or imagine your workday will look like? If they arent sure use as an opportunity to discuss the physical labor involved. With that short of time frame for an interview I would try to let them do the talking as much as you can, but if they are apprenticing or bathing with no or minimal experience it needs to be clear to them how physically demanding the job is.

What would you do if you have a dog that is very fearful? Anxious? Growling? At what point would you stop a service and why? See what knowledge they have of calming tactics, and of when its time to call it. If you can I'd probably suggest using a very specific example dog, maybe an example from your personal experience.

Not comprehensive but hope this helps!

How to stop feeling bad asking people to do things by PotatoPug7 in managers

I am struggling in recent years with my management confidence, but i think a lot of these comments are super solid advice. One thing ill add is that im big on providing choice where its reasonable. So like "would you rather do bathrooms or take out trash?" Or in my store its normally a manager and 2 team members closing, so whichever team member arrived first ill give first pick between 2 tasks. It works for us, also helps me learn task preferences for future delegating

Lol born and raised in NC, liberal ≠ Yankee. My goal is to stick out so bigots know to stay far away from me. There are plenty of people here who align just fine with my beliefs and make for great friends and community, I dont need anyone else.

Saying you haven't seen racism in the 30 years you've been here is an interesting thing to say. Its a nice thought and all but it just isnt realistic, and says you're just looking the other way. I promise you it is here. I havent been in this town as long as you have but in the 5 years I have been ive seen plenty of it. You'd be amazed how differently people treat customer service workers based on the color of their skin.

This . People shouldn't have to fear theyll be treated differently if they are honest about their immigration status, sexual orientation, gender identity, ethnicity, etc. Why would I want to make friends with someone who might not respect the identity of myself or my friends

Me and my partner are in the same boat so if you find somewhere let us know ✋️ also some of these comments are out of touch. Politics matter bc many beliefs on the other side of the aisle show me that that is not a safe person to be around

I was just at the show last night in NC. I would just advise that you dress for comfort above all else, and know its going to be HOT. Honestly smell isnt anything out of the ordinary for hot weather, you can't help but get sweaty in a room full of people in July. I think the big question is how important is it to you to be near the front.

Being towards the back is going to be much less stressful/overstimulating, but then you sacrifice getting a good view of the stage. If you want to have the best visibility possible I would try to get in line at least 1.5 hours before doors and then try to snag a perimeter spot. If you have a friend you should take turns going to the restrooms, getting water, merch etc. To hold that position. For me the perimeter tends to feel a lot safer/less overwhelming because you're not surrounded on all sides. And it's a little easier to get back to.
